The schools have both entirely shed their Catholic identities except in the most superficial ways (e.g. there are still some priests and a church, respectively, on the campuses). Having a priest as a leader is meaningless as Ted Hesburgh completely cut the church off from the universities. My favorite Hesburgh quote on one of the many occasions in which he ignored the Church was “What is John Paul going to tell them? That Notre Dame isn’t catholic? Who would believe him?”. That sums it up pretty well.I checked on this. Both have to have a priest as leader. Are you sure they are not Catholic schools? If not, the why did AB Chaput say what he did?
Maybe Planned Parenthood should start calling itself Catholic Planned Parenthood and then all Catholics can get behind them. After all, what makes one a catholic is claiming to be one, not following church teaching.
