We would not be in this place if most people had not fallen into secular-paganism. Most people (even those claiming to be Catholic) just do not care about these issues and think that it is just another fear tactic being used by certain groups.
Religious freedoms cannot be protected when so many people do not care about the faith. We have to bring those people back, the rest will come as a natural consequence of people having a renewed faith.
My guess is less than 20% of the population (perhaps as low as 15%) holds a binding Christian faith–that means the USA is a ripe mission field with little workers to bring in the harvest.
So, while I agree with the good ArchBishop that this belongs mainly in the hands of the laity, we must also be realistic and understand that most people just do not care about religious freedoms because they do not care about religion–and the loss of religion and faith in this country is something that the Bishops, Priests, Church, and Laity, all must care about.
This is what happens when the people of a nation loses its faith.
I think it is time for us to drop the fantasy that this country is mainly populated by Christians, it just is no longer true (15-20% tops). We have apostasized in great numbers, and therein lies the real reason for almost everything we see going on…we have collectively walked away from God/Jesus. We must, imo, open our eyes to those truths because only then can we begin to do the real work of helping to convert and save souls.
We must first create a true love for souls–we must live our lives as if the conversion and salvation of souls is the most important thing to do. If we do that, we will change the nation and the world.
