Archbishop Chaput: “Systematic Discrimination Against Church Now Seems Inevitable”

Wed Aug 25 23:19:04 EDT
In his talk on Tuesday in Slovakia the archbishop stated, “I would argue that the defense of Western ideals is the only protection that we and our neighbors have against a descent into new forms of repression – whether it might be at the hands of extremist Islam or secularist technocrats.” Full Story

Archbishop Chaput: "Systematic Discrimination Against Church Now Seems Inevitable

Did you intend to include a link? If so, it didn’t go through.

Wise man, Archbishop Chaput.

He sees and understands what is happening-the Body of Christ-Christ’s Church is going through The Passion. The Body is following the Head.

Like we pray daily at Holy Mass: As we wait in Joyful Hope, for the Coming of Our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Like Pope John Paul II stated, “Be Not Afraid!”

Pray!

God Bless.

I don’t think that the cardinal makes a case that religious discrimination is either inevitable or precipitant. He states: “We face an aggressively secular political vision and a consumerist economic model that result - in practice, if not in explicit intent – in a new kind of state-encouraged atheism.” which may be ruing the rise of atheism or the lessening or religiosity in the US. But that’s not discrimination against anyone. Maybe we Christians have just become too complacent about a Christian country. All that does not imperil freedom of religion in the US.

Further, his stance on ‘Western ideals’ puzzles me. I don’t consider Christianity a European religion, but that view just about states that it is.

Funny, those of us mere mortals who saw this coming months, even years ago were branded paranoid wackos on most of these forums! If the Church had reacted strongly and positively then instead of pooh-poohing the thought we might be in less danger today.

Every age has its heralds of doom. When things go well, we label them cranks and fools (or even paranoid wackos). When things go badly, they are branded prophets. Chaput? The answer will be in the rear-view mirror.

You are absolutely without a doubt 100 per cent correct. You should have seen the reaction to my topic(6-8 months ago) which begged Catholics, Clergy and Laiety to FIGHT BACK and elbow our way back into the centre of the Public Square as Christ commanded us to!To spread the good news.

The corner we’ve been allowed to stand in is getting smaller and smaller as our ENEMY gets bolder and bolder.I was pooh-poohed,branded a zealot and dismissed by the Usual Suspects and ordinary non-letist non-new age Catholics.

Canadian Cardinal Oullet,a brave man who laughed at the legislators and media of Quebec(one of whom in print wished him a slow death of cancer of the rectum because he simply stood by the Church’s stance on abortion,INCLUDING rape) is now in Rome and will oversee the selection of Bishops world-wide.Get ready for many more Chaputs and Fred Henry’s of Calgary.

I don’t think anyone has to look further than the opinions of today’s youth to realize that persecution against the Church and religion as a whole is coming. As a young person, I can say without hesitation that the vast majority of people in my area who claim no religious affiliation have decidedly negative views about religion and religious people. It’s gotten to the point where many people around my parts wholeheartedly believe that all religious expression of any kind should be publicly banned

I don’t know if these opinions will fade later in life, but if everything holds true I think people belonging to any faith group will face the “systematic discrimination” Archbishop Chaput speaks of.

Then some of us will be martyred-literally crucified for our Faith. What you are referring to is a kind of Fascism that denies free speech. This is the apostacy that was predicted at Garabanda,Fatima, and Rawanda. We are the Remnant and we or our children will suffer as the early Catholics did during the first 300 years after Christ’s death. We will suffer as the Orthodox and Catholics suffered in the former Soviet Union, but look at the flourishing of the Faith now.

If you are correct then why are the young flocking to the Culture of Life and N.O.W. and NARAL bemoaning that fact. These murderous Grannies are dying off and they wonder who will replace them.I suggest you look for a new set of friends,Preferably in Church or Catholic Youth Organizations or Pro-life groups.

Well, I think that history has shown us that when societies become more secular, religious freedom actually increases. Consider the Puritans in America. So I respectfully disagree with the archbishop.

Communist countries have proven otherwise.

Communist countries have proven otherwise.
Well, check US history. As the country became more secular, religious freedom increased. Communist countries did not just secularize religious practices, they were actively hostile. So you use an irrelevant example.

What are you talking about? As the country has become more secular, religious freedom has decreased. Secularizers are doing their best to remove any mention of God from the public square. Religious symbols are being removed and/or banned from public spaces. How is that “religious freedom?”

You better check World History Beau. The world doesn’t revolve around the US or perhaps you are listening to those Republicans again.

Canada is far more secular than the US and when we ban radio personality Dr. Laura because she says that homosexuality is wrong then you get religious discrimination.

Just think: Massachusetts was a theocracy under the Puritans. There used to be laws against parochial schools. The Amish used to have to keep their children in public schools until age 16. All that is in the past.

Religious freedom has increased. Other folks’ attempts to foist their religion down the public’s throats or to have the public support their religion have decreased. That’s an important support of religious freedoms, too.

It wouldn’t have been secularists that foiled the puritans from prohibiting parochial schools. It would have been the non-puritan religious people that united to foil the puritans. Secularists would have no religious schools or attempt to dictate what religious beliefs can be taught. This we are seeing even within religious schools here in Canada and elsewhere.

A society that welcomes religious freedoms for all religions is not a secular society.

Another example is France. Under Chirac it prided itself as a Secular society. Chirac even proclaimed that as well. Under Chirac they passed a law that there could be no religious symbols worn by students in Public schools. Jews couldn’t wear their skullcap (sorry I don’t know the proper term for it), Muslim girls couldn’t wear a hijab (not a burqa) and Christians couldn’t wear a large crucifix.

Tell me how that is increasing religious freedoms?
