Well for one, I don’t think a nation who’s middle class is ranked 27th in the Global Wealth Data Book and has reached the highest point on the misery index since 1983…along with chronic 7-8% unemployment is considered “prosperous”2241 The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin.
Which they are through visas…we cannot be blamed that they fail to renew their visas or refuse to leave after their visas have expired.Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him.
and may I be frank? How do immigrants do this, when they break our immigration laws and demand the nation cater to their demands, such as demanding their language to spoken instead of learning English?Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants’ duties toward their country of adoption. **Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws **and to assist in carrying civic burdens.
Oh swell. Another bishop involving himself in politics. Well, frankly, Scarlett …

I agree, something must be done. But how many times has amnesty been given (anyone remember the 80s?) and has resulted in same mess we are in? We hear about the poor illegal immigrants, but let’s be realistic. The only reason the political parties are talking about them, is because they see potential votes nothing more. Why shouldn’t an Archbishop give testimony? He sees what is happening to the poor and marginalized in his Archdiocese. Should he not speak for them? When Archbishop Dolan speaks about the HHS Mandate is he too political? Catholics can not afford to think in terms of right-left, democrat-republican. We are for what is right and true and just.
Because this is a political issue, not a moral one. The fact that people’s lives will be affected by the choices the politicians make does not mean those choices are between moral and immoral proposals any more than doctors who disagree over a diagnosis and treatment are involved in moral choices. Why shouldn’t an Archbishop give testimony?
He is not speaking for the poor. The two sides here are not separated into those who support the poor and those who dismiss them; they are separated by different beliefs about what consequences different proposals would have. This is no more a moral choice than believing we should turn right at the light instead of left.He sees what is happening to the poor and marginalized in his Archdiocese. Should he not speak for them?
No because in that case there really is an issue that affects the church. In that case there are obligations placed on church entities that are contrary to Catholic doctrine. Just because most issues in which the bishops involve themselves are inappropriate doesn’t mean they all are. When Archbishop Dolan speaks about the HHS Mandate is he too political?
The problem is that - as with most political issues - there is no clear choice between the different options. For example: should the minimum wage be increased? No one knows the real effect such an action would have. We all speculate based on our perceptions of how the world works but there is nothing here to tell us what is “right and true and just.” The same is true of immigration. It is a political issue with serious consequences but it does not present us with moral decisions.Catholics can not afford to think in terms of right-left, democrat-republican. We are for what is right and true and just.
Idk why either, but I’m getting tired of it as well.I don’t understand why the bishops aren’t concerned about low-wage American workers having their wages depressed and kept down by a steady flow of illegal aliens who will simply work for less, and many of whom are not even here permanently just want to save a nest egg to bring home to Mexico in a few years. The bishops don’t seem to have a handle on the economics or the big picture of illegal aliens, yet they’re making policy recommendations anyway.
They did the same thing with Obamacare, basically saying to the Democrats “well, we support Obamacare, just make sure it doesn’t fund aborton, ok?” And all the Democrats said “Oh, okay!” and tried not to laugh out loud.
Same thing with Nancy Pelosi, and her private catechism lessons. “See Nancy, abortion is killing.” and she says “Huh? - wait, hold that thought - I’m late for a vote on an abortion bill - we’ll have to continue this dialog after Mass this Sunday, ok?”
These guys never learn. They’re out of their element in hardball politics. They’re going to keep getting taken to the cleaners by the politicians every time. Sad. Meanwhile millions of ignorant Catholics keep skipping Mass every week and keep voting for Obama and the Democrats, who keep voting for abortion, gay marriage, free condoms from Planned Parenthood, …
I’d like to see the bishops take the resources [we give them which] they’re sinking into promoting their idea of good immigration policy and focus them instead on educating their own disoriented flock.
