Archbishop Gregory says he won’t deny Biden communion. How will Catholics respond?

By what principle do you support an individuals right to choose mask wearing and social behavior but reject Bidens individual right to be pro choice?
How about you answer the question?
The only possible conclusion then is that you consider yourself the highest moral authority as your principle
Well, there are other possible conclusions, ones that are more favorable. I think people of the same position as @Cathoholic are coming from the principle that there is a collective conscience, and God informs the conscience, especially in revealing that the unborn child is of infinite value, as are all children of God. This is what the Church teaches.

So, it all depends on what a person means by “right to be pro-choice”, especially in light of the inability of the unborn child to choose its own destiny when it comes to abortion. Like the month-old child, the unborn child is completely dependent.

So, @Cathoholic, are you seeing another application of CCC2478?

Because murder is a sin, but wearing a mask is political theater.

I am in such distress over this, but what can any of us do, other than the usual constant of more prayer and offering up of sacrifices?
Yes, we can definitely pray. We can pray for Mr. Biden’s enlightenment.

We can also pray that the faithful come to see that we are all sinners, and that communion itself, the Eucharist, is a means toward enlightenment. There are some really important questions to address in this:
  1. Do I hold something against Mr. Biden? If so, I am called to forgive. (Mark 11:25)
  2. Am I giving Mr. Biden a favorable interpretation? What is going on in his mind? Why does he support such freedom to kill a child? We are to use CCC2478 as a guide, but I also like what a priest once told me, which reflects Jesus’ call not to judge. He said, “It is not to condemn or condone, but understand”. If my answers to such questions are that Mr. Biden is evil or part evil, then we can look deeper, bypassing the judgment. Judgment is not an answer at all, it is not an understanding.
  3. What might be a means of promoting the life of the unborn rather than through laws that forbid abortion? While I am hopeful that the supreme court will make abortion more difficult to do so lawfully, laws will not stop abortions. Education is extremely important.

Is this surprising? Back in 2004 Archbishop Gregory’s predecessor in Atlanta signed a decree (linked below) along with two other southeastern US bishops prohibiting ministers from administering the Eucharist to publicly pro-abortion politicians without public repentance. Biden was denied communion under this very decree in 2019 in Charlotte. However, Archbishop Gregory seems to have not continued its effect in Atlanta when he arrived there. I also have no doubt Cardinal Gregory’s immediate predecessors in DC would have done differently, sadly. Pray for the Cardinal and the President as they have been committed much, and much will be required of them.
