Archbishop Levada waives immunity, will testify on Portland
San Francisco, Aug. 11 (CWNews.com) - Archbishop William Levada has consented to waive the diplomatic immunity that he will enjoy, as prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and give testimony in sex-abuse lawsuits in the Portland, Oregon archdiocese.
On Sunday, August 7, as he celebrated a farewell Mass before leaving his current post as Archbishop of San Francisco, Levada was served with a subpoena compelling his testimony in the Portland case. The archbishop who headed the Portland archdiocese from 1986 to 1995, will be questioned about policies for the disciplinary handling of priests accused of molesting children there.
As a Vatican official, the archbishop could claim immunity from American courts. But Archbishop Levada has agreed to accept the court’s jurisdiction, and will give testimony in a deposition scheduled to take place in San Francisco in January of next year.
The archbishop’s testimony in a sex-abuse case will command unusual attention because, as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he will supervise the Vatican’s handling of disciplinary action against priests who are accused of molesting children.
