This might not be huge news, but it is good news:

On Saturday, April 28, Archbishop John C. Neinstedt, archbishop of St. Paul-Minneapolis, was awarded an honorary doctorate at the commencement exercises of his former Alma Mater, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, which he helped reorganize into a major seminary, and of which he served as the ninth rector from 1988 until 1994. Also present at the Mass and commencement exercises, were seventh rector Bishop Bernard Harrington of Winona, tenth rector Archbishop Alan Vigneron, twelfth rector Monsignor Jeffery Monforton, and incumbent thirteenth rector Monsignor Todd Lajiness, who will assume the role on May 5, bringing the total number of past, present, and future rectors to five.

In his homily, Archbishop Neinstedt spoke about his role in the reorganization of Sacred Heart into a major seminary in the context of a renewal rather than a re-invention. “The world needs us to re-present the good news of the Gospel. It is not a new message, but one which must speak to the world of today.” He emphasized that the Gospel message must reach every heart, and is an integral part of the mission of every Catholic, not only to clergy. He invited the graduates to embrace this mission to go forth, and “preach the good news to all the world, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” The message of the Gospel is crucial, since it is the light of the world, he said.

At the commencement exercises which followed, 78 candidates received a total of 87 different degrees, including eight deacons to be ordained priests in the coming months. All eight received the S.T.B. through the Pontifical College of St. Thomas in Rome, six of whom in addition to the traditional Masters in Divinity.

Also historic is the graduation of two deacons to be ordained for the Chaldean Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle, the first time in the history of the United States that two priests will be ordained at the same time in the Chaldean Church in the United States.

Archbishop Neinstedt was awarded the honorary Doctorate of Christian Letters.
