Believers must strive heroically against materialism in order for the New Evangelization to take root, Archbishop John Nienstedt of St. Paul and Minneapolis said in an interview with L’Osservatore Romano.

Its hard to fight materialism in this culture, but it has to start at home in the family, teach the child from infancy on up, Give them a moral compass and a firm grounding in the faith, When I was young we had Catholic sisters who taught us the Baltimore Cathcism, plant the seed early so you can guide its growth. There is so much pressure from the “world” a child needs all the guideance he or she can get.

While we are being told to avoid materialism the parishes and diocese are constantly asking for increased donations, some asking for tithes others have even hired professional fund raisers. Can’t have it both ways.

Good evening, Bob,

I give the little I can to the Church and God’s works and try to share my material things with others. That, and abide in prayer is about all I, or anyone else, can do.

With costs rising the way they are, I can’t blame a church nor other Catholic organization for asking for more money.
However, I do think hiring a professional fund raiser is a waste of time and money … better to put that money spent on the fund raiser to work in the Church or Catholic organization. People have only so much to give during rising costs and hiring the fund raiser is, I think, going over the top.

God loves you,
Don

The way things are going in this economy, the Archbishop is going to prevail upon believers and non-believers alike. Neither will be able to afford the level of materialism they currently have. I can see myself frequently riding a bike instead of driving, avoiding restaurants, staying at home, and not shopping nearly as much as I used to. It’s going to be commonplace.

Our diocese just announced a campaign to raise $35 MILLION to renovate a seminary and increase the endowment to support seminarians. I understand and appreciate the need they outlined but when we are paying increases of 25% and rising for food, 15% for medical insurance, gasoline prices escalating at an alarming rate, food bank customers up 50% since January and savings account interest at near zero I think the request is insensitive at least and insane at worst. The diocese doesn’t live in the real world, perhaps they need to live on the Ramen Noodle and hamburger diet that many of us “enjoy”.
