And again as I said Catholics and employers and any of us break laws with consequences.
Everything has consequences.

Abiding by unjust laws has consequences.

And passing unjust laws has consequences.

Here is a C-Span video of a USCCB group discussing this issue. It’s a long video, but contains a lot of information that one might not have known simply from news releases. (For example, that five members of the committee that recommeded the contraception as a mandated service were also on the board of Planned Parenthood.)

An article which appeared in the Boston Globe today that addresses how the Massachusetts law differs from the federal mandate:
One major difference is that states have no power to mandate benefits for companies that are self-insured. So self-insured hospitals and universities in Massachusetts can get around the contraception mandate today, but will not be able to avoid the federal mandate, Turnbull said.
The Sisters of Providence Health System in Western Massachusetts, which is self-insured, does not offer health plans with contraception. Yvonne Boudreau, senior vice president of mission for the health system, said the organization is exempt from the Massachusetts rule because it is a public/private church plan. It is investigating whether it will still be exempt under Obama’s requirement.
Raymond Delisle, spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Worcester, said there is also a difference in the wording of the state and federal religious exemptions. The diocese has relied on Massachusetts’ religious exemption to avoid offering contraceptives in its health plans, both for church employees and for those involved in other activities like social work, education, and health care. Under Obama’s requirement, which specifies that religiously exempt organizations must promote religion and primarily serve and employ people of the same faith, the diocese will no longer qualify for a religious exemption for employees involved in the outside activities.

Thank you, JimG. This is a very informative video. Long but worth the time.

The Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod objects to the HHS Mandate too.

lcms.org/page.aspx?pid=1330
On the thread closed due to the 1000 post limit someone posted the United Methodists, Presbyterian USA, Episcopal, and the United Church of Christ were among those religions not objecting. Is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) or just the Missouri Synod objecting? I believe the Missouri Synod membership is a bit smaller than the ELCA. Or I know it was as of a few yrs ago.

I know an easy solution to this problem. Elect Santorum or at least a Republican and they will overturn Obamacare like they all promise to do. Problem solved, easy.

Hold the boat sports fans! What is happening here IS because we have met the enemy and he is us. When a little over 50% of mainstream Catholics and a similar number of American Catholic Bishops supported Obama then perhaps the joke is on us. First, Obama went after the Conservatives, now he’s coming after the Catholics and anyone else who gets in his way of his vision of what the world ought to look like and the means he’ll employ as a Chicago pol to achieve it. How many Catholics and Bishops supported Obamacare? A bunch! Everyone bought his flowery platitudes of unity and nobody checked his background out. This man is no Christian, he’s adheres to Black Liberation Theology, embraces eugenics, gay marriage and everything the Catholic Church holds contrarian positions. He went to Notre Dame, engaged in dialogue with Archbishop Dolan, got his opposition close enough to fill the rock loaded socks to swing and connect against his adversaries. Have we learned our lesson yet with this guy? Something tells me we have not! He’ll get a plurality of the Catholic vote once again and the beat goes on! The joke’s on us and when you willfully engage rattlesnakes in their den, you shouldn’t be surprised when you get bit!

This is simply brilliant:

nationalreview.com/articles/290699/gospel-according-obama-charles-krauthammer

You really need to read it, it’s not that long, but the punch line comes in the last couple paragraphs.

If there was any question that Obama is engaged in crass politics, Krauthammer corners Obama like Perry Mason in the courtroom. All that remains is for Obama to cry out, “yes, I did it, and I’m glad!”
Here’s a quote from the article:

…the newly revealed Gospel according to Sebelius, over which has erupted quite a contretemps. By some peculiar logic, it falls to the health-and-human-services secretary to promulgate the definition of “religious” — for the purposes, for example, of exempting religious institutions from certain regulatory dictates.

Such exemptions are granted in grudging recognition that, whereas the rest of civil society may be broken to the will of the state’s regulators, our quaint Constitution grants special autonomy to religious institutions.

Accordingly, it would be a mockery of the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment if, for example, the Catholic Church were required by law to freely provide such “health-care services” (in secularist parlance) as contraception, sterilization, and pharmacological abortion — to which Catholicism is doctrinally opposed as a grave contravention of its teachings about the sanctity of life.

Ah. But there would be no such Free Exercise violation if the institutions so mandated are deemed, by regulatory fiat, not religious.

And thus, the word came forth from Sebelius decreeing the exact criteria required (a) to meet her definition of “religious” and thus (b) to qualify for a modicum of independence from newly enacted state control of American health care, under which the aforementioned Sebelius and her phalanx of experts determine everything — from who is to be covered, to which treatments are to be guaranteed free-of-charge.

And here’s what bothers me: the left-leaning Catholic Bishops and Sister Keehan from the Catholic Health Association will probably roll over if Obama gives them a broad-enough exemption, while leaving secular employers under Obamacare’s thumb. They did like the idea of Obamacare, they lobbied in favor of Obamacare, and they may yet betray the rest of us secular folks, if only they can get their special deal and special exemption under Obamacare. In other words, if I, L piperatus, a secular guy, happen to run a business (let’s say a pharmacy of my own, a restaurant, or similar small business) where I employ other people, Obamacare **will force me **to offer the very same immoral coverage (contraception, abortive drugs and devices, sterilization), free of charge, to my employees, that the Catholic universities, schools and hospitals will be exempted from.

And that, my friends, will be a most cynical betrayal of the rest of us, from our left-leaning Bishops and Catholic lobbyists (the secretariat at the USCCB, Sister Keehan, Catholic Healthcare Association, etc.) who did support Obamacare and will most probably support it again, as long as they get their own special exemption. How is this any better than Stalin’s special deal with Hitler, the Molotov-Ribbentrop non-aggression pact, which from the Russian part gave Hitler a free hand in attacking other countries in exchange for promising that he would leave Russia alone? Of course, in the end, Russia learned the hard way - Hitler did break his promise, and attacked Russia, after it attacked some other countries first. Our left-leaning Catholic bishops, the lobbyists at the USCCB, and others who supported Obamacare are also getting a lesson now about allying themselves with tyrants, just as the Russians got their lesson when Hitler attacked them. Still, I’m afraid, they haven’t learned their lesson, and will support Obamacare again, even at the expense of betraying the rest of us secular folks, if only they can get their special exemptions for their Catholic schools, hospitals, and charities… 😦

Contraception controversy consumes CPAC, Washington and the presidential campaign

“This isn’t even a social issue. This is a constitutional issue,” Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said onstage. “What (the Constitution) says is that the federal government does not have the power to force religious organizations to pay for things that that organization thinks is wrong.” " - Fox News

Breaking news: White House to announce ‘accommodation’ on contraceptive policy
The White House is expected to announce as early as Friday a plan to accommodate religious organizations that are opposed to a new policy requiring them to offer contraceptive coverage to employees.
A senior adviser to President Obama confirmed to Fox News that there will be an “accommodation” – but advisers said the announcement does not represent a “compromise.”
The move comes as several prominent Democratic lawmakers have urged the Obama administration to reconsider its position. Vice President Biden said in an interview a day earlier that he was “determined” to work out the dispute.
Biden is among a string of Catholic administration officials who reportedly voiced concerns with the policy as it was being hashed out. Obama announced the rule in January, requiring birth control coverage without a co-pay for employees. The rule exempts churches and houses of worship but would apply to other religious organizations in 2013.
Catholic leaders have vigorously opposed the policy. In Congress, Republicans have threatened to overturn the rule if the administration does not change course. The issue has also taken center stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington this week, and on the Republican presidential campaign trail.
Still, Obama has rallied Democratic allies to his side in defense of the policy and its intent to expand access for women to contraceptive services. Claims that the change does not mark a compromise indicate the administration does not want to be seen as backpedaling on the issue.

You are correct on this history of this and I fear that you are probably correct on what is likely to occur but let’s give the bishops the benefit of the doubt for the moment. There is an old Catholic saying, “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.” The bishops were made to look like fools for trusting this administration. Let’s hope they learned their lesson. We can also hope that they will reevaluate their infatuation with the welfare state, generally, but that will take much longer.

This administration has proven it can never be trusted.
I thought that Kathleen Sebelius was bad for Kansas as governor; she has proven to be a million times worse as HHS Secretary. Please send her back.
