B…b…bb…but, what about the swine/bird/next pandemic!?

“We’ll all be rooned” said Hanrahan, before this year is out!

Just out of curiosity what was the reason for this recent decision ? Does the method of recieving the blessed body of Christ make any difference ? Is it an act of humility ? It is still the same BBC that we are given

The reasons can be found in the article :).

Would you toss the Eucharist in your mouth as if it were junior mint? Of course you wouldn’t, because you understand that it is the Flesh of our Lord and Savior. That’s why the Church restricts reception to two distinct methods. If we do not properly honour Him at the moment of reception, then do we truly understand what we are receiving?

Interesting.

Just about everyone receives it in their hand at my parish.

Wouldn’t it be better if a pronouncement such as this be better if it was made by the Pope ? as it would cause more reflection and adhearance ?? I know I would be more inclined to follow the suggestion from the Pope rather than the Bishop or Archbishop unless they had an official letter from the Vatican expressing this desire for us to follow

Pope BXVI hasn’t removed the indult allowing CITT, but he is currently giving Communion on the tongue to those kneeling. He’s leading by example.😉

Well you don’t have to listen to his Grace because you aren’t in his diocese, but if you were in Bologna you would be obliged to follow. Likewise if your own bishop did the same.

But yes, it would be best if the Pope did this himself and the Pope could enforce such a change universally.

I understand why the Abp. of Bologna would require Communion on the tongue in certain shrine churches, but it would make more sense to me to require it in ALL his churches.

Does he not have this right?

Hmmm, I am not so sure about that…“suggestion” from the Pope…Hmmm

I will be quick to admit that I am not a traditionalist, but I am an orthodox, traditional Catholic.

My question is this however. What makes the tougue more holy than the hand? I assure you I am not being flippant with this question.🙂

When I recieve Our Lord, I do as the ECF did and I make my hands a throne for the Lord, I do not grasp the Host in my fingers and then pop it into my mouth like a “Christ crispy” but I leave it in my palms and then raise them to my mouth.

I will be honest and say now that I seem to be developing Parkinson’s disease, the idea of receiving on the toungue (so as to avoid the terrible accident of dropping the host due to my shaking, is beginning to make sense).

For me at least its the fact that by receiving on the tongue I dont get to hold or touch the Eucharist, it Further reaffirms to me at least that this is not simply unleavened bread but the body of our blessed Lord (Also the fact that my hands are not consecrated like a Priest), There is something to be said for being on your knees and receiving the Body of Christ. Now I know there are members on this forum who will attest that the externals do not matter and its the internals that are key and i agree…to an extent. But im a firm believer in Lex Orandi, Lex Creandi.

I realize I am coming late to this thread but this question popped out at me.

The Pope doesn’t need to make a separate pronouncement. The indult to receive in the hand includes an admonition to the Bishop to not use it if there is a danger of profanement or diminishing respect for the Eucharist. It sounds like this Bishop is just doing what he was told to do in the indult itself.

There are many dioceses around the world, and even whole conferences, that have not implemented or asked for the indult for Communion in the hand. So a universal prouncement for a local issue would not make sense.

Very interesting. I wonder if they have Eucharistic Ministers in the Diocese of Bologna. It’d be nice if they didn’t. Hopefully they also kneel and use a patten along with receiving on the tongue. It’s safer; more reverent, too.

Oh that came through our community a couple of weeks ago, through our home maybe, too. By the time it reached us, they weren’t testing for H1N1 any longer, so I’m not sure what it was we had. It’s just a bad flu, like any other flu.

That’s interesting. Which dioceses and which conferences?

And what proportion of all the dioceses in the world do they represent?

A few years ago, one of the diocese in Brazil asked to not implement the indult, even though the Bishop’s Conference in Brazil had adopted it. The response from the Vatican was that it was up to the local Bishop, that the indult was permission - not mandate.

In Colombia, none of the dioceses has the indult. I don’t believe the Bishop’s Conference has requested it. In Mexico, the diocese where Cozumel is, does not have it as well as some others in Mexico. Since our parish has many families that travel back and forth to Mexico, we are careful when we teach First Communicants that they have the option here but may or may not have that option in Mexico.

And those are just the ones I can remember from the top of my head.
