Let’s pray for everyone involved here! Poor Fr. Howell, having to walk into the mess.

Archbishop John Bathersby has been the target of a bomb threat following the sacking of a rebel priest at St Mary's church in South Brisbane.
A spokesman for the Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane said on Saturday the threat was received at the Archbishop's office on Friday.
He confirmed that the Archbishop's residence was the target in the letter.
"It made mention of St Mary's, but that's now in the hands of police," the spokesman said.
He refused to confirm whether the letter was written by someone who supported sacked 71-year-old rebel priest Father Peter Kennedy, or a supporter of the Catholic Archdiocese.
Fr Kennedy was sacked from his ministry at St Mary's parish on Thursday by Brisbane Archbishop Bathersby for breaching church rules.
A police spokesman confirmed a bomb threat had been made and investigations were continuing.
St Mary's has been the centre of controversy in recent months, with Fr Kennedy attracting the stern eye of the Vatican itself.
The congregation of 700 has a unique ministry in the inner-city suburb of South Brisbane, widely acknowledged as a haven for the poor, the marginalised, indigenous people, homosexuals and broken families.
Fr Ken Howell has been appointed to replace Fr Kennedy, and the two recently met face to face.
At that meeting, Fr Kennedy refused to hand over the keys to the parish buildings, including the church, and told Fr Howell that he would officiate at all masses this weekend.
Fr Kennedy said he expected the church to be packed to the rafters during the church's concert on Saturday night and at the 7am and 9am Sunday masses.
"I'm expecting probably a thousand people here on Sunday morning - I wouldn't be surprised," Fr Kennedy said.
"I have to tell you our collection on Sunday morning is usually $2,100 - last Sunday it was $5,400 - so that says a lot."
Fr Howell has been advised by the Queensland Police Service not to attend this weekend's masses at St Mary's for his own safety.
"I have also been contacted by a number of people, saying they would like to attend the services but are hesitant to do so because they are concerned about their own, and their families' safety," Fr Howell said.
Despite the bomb threat made to his residence, Archbishop Bathersby said the Brisbane Catholic Archdioceses' priority was to ensure the proper transition of the parish to the new administrator.
"In this difficult situation, I believe a sensible next step would be to have an experienced, independent and eminent mediator meet with the Archdiocese and Fr Kennedy to attempt to achieve a peaceful and dignified outcome," the Archbishop said.

First, Sarah Palin’s church was arsoned, causing $1 million in damages though covered by insurance, now our Archbishops are receiving bomb threats.

What is happening to our country!

This one is in Australia.

I hate to say this, but I have a feeling that the only way this will be resolved is with the suppression of the parish and excommunication of it leaders including Fr. Kennedy

Interesting, you give a similar suggestion to the one that the Orthodox Jews gave to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI regarding the left leaning side of the Catholic Church.

According to the Archbishop, he does face excommunication. I would call refusing to hand over the keys as at least continuing in rebellion. Moreover, he now has no legal right to be there.

I think it says a lot about what this man has been teaching that the fruit of his work is a bomb threat against his replacement and the Archbishop. There have also been a considerable number of phone calls cursing the Archbishop.

What I find to be particularly horrifying is that any Catholic priest could be in danger *from his parishioners *while attending or officiating Mass. They don’t even know Fr. Howell yet, and already they hate him so much as to threaten his physical safety during Mass. What ever happened to ‘If you have a dispute with your neighbour, settle it before going to worship. Do not try to worship God with hate in your heart. (to paraphrase)’

I know the Church needs to move carefully in these situations, but I really think that in some cases, they take too long. Many people have been led astray in that parish. This didn’t happen overnight. This poison has sunk in deep. For the sake of their souls, and of others in similar circumstances, the Church should move more quickly. Although excommunication is the severest punishment the Church can hand out, it is nevertheless a call to repent and return.

May the Holy Spirit enlighten and guide all those led astray by this man back to the fold. May Fr. Kennedy also be blessed, repent his rebellion and return to the Church.

Archbishop Bathersby said he anticipated the sacking of the 71-year-old rogue priest would result in many members of the congregation leaving St Mary’s, but warned Father Kennedy faced excommunication if he continued in the same vein.
Some of the complaints against Father Kennedy include allowing a Buddhist statue in the church, changing the words when performing sacraments and questioning the virgin birth of Jesus.

“Here are Christians writing to me and calling me the most abominable names and cursing me to kingdom come - (saying) ‘may you fry in hell’s fire forever and ever’,” he said.
“Not to mention the real swear words that come through the phone and these are supposed to be members of the Christian community.”

II quite honestly don’t know how this is going to end. There are a number of options that I can see but I like none of them.
  1. Peter Kennedy can be removed by force - since he is no longer the parish priest is he trespassing on St Mary’s. If the police came to remove Peter Kennedy his supporters would probably interfere with the police.
  2. If Peter Kennedy were removed and the new parish priest Fr Howell came to say Mass, the Mass would probably be turned into a political protest.
  3. The archbishop of Brisbane who let this situation fester for 28 years, telling Peter Kennedy that he could continue as the liberal wing of the Church, could retreat with his tail between his legs. A victory would give all of the Peter Kennedy’s in Australia - and there are many of them - heart and we could have the beginning of an official church within the Church.
  4. Would Peter Kennedy and those of a similiar mind who wrest parishes from the archdiocese still be paid by the archciocese? imagine that Peter Kennedy is still receiving and banking his pay cheque from the archdiocese of Brisbane.
C.S.Lewis wrote this of Anglican priests but I think it applies in this situation also. [square brackets mine]

To Dissenting Priests
“It is your duty to to fix the lines (of doctrine) clearly in your minds: and if you wish to go beyond them you must change your profession. This is your duty not specially as Christians or as priests but as honest men. There is a danger here of the clergy developing a special professional conscience which obscures the very plain moral issue. Men who have passed beyond these boundary lines in either direction are apt to protest that they have come by their unorthodox opinions honestly. In defense of those opinions they are prepared to suffer obloquy and to forfeit professional advancement. They thus come to feel like martyrs. But this simply misses the point which so gravely scandalizes the layman. We never doubted that the unorthodox opinions were honestly held: what we complain of is your continuing in your ministry after you have come to hold them. We always knew that a man who makes his living as a paid agent of the Conservative Party may honestly change his views and honestly become a Communist. What we deny is that he can honestly continue to be a Conservative agent and to receive money from one party [and occupy the premises of the party paying] while he supports the policy of the other.”

This is apparently not the first time Ratsinger (the current Pope) has tried to sack Kennedy (must be something in a name!!). The first time (at least 20 years ago) the previous Archbishop refused to sack Kennedy, and so now there is a new Archbishop who has Pell (the Cardinal for Australia) and Ratsinger as his bosses. Unfortunately the current Archbishop has made himself the meat in the sandwich between Ratsinger and Pell. And Kennedy’s popularity will only increase in this poorly managed process.
Ciao

Fr. Kennedy needs to be arrested for criminal trespass.

Fr. Kennedy needs to be defrocked.

Fr. Kennedy should never have been allowed 20+ years in one parish, either.

Furlong, could you please provide a source for the above comment.

Could you please explain what you mean by the above; I can’t make head nor tail of it.
