Former Nuncio Pablo Puente praises Church in Britain
Archbishop Pablo Puente, the recently retired Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, has praised the Catholic Church in England, Wales and Scotland for its strength and vitality.
In an extremely rare and exclusive Q&A interview with Dominic Baster for the November 2004 edition of Briefing - the official journal of the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of England & Wales and Scotland - Archbishop Puente said: “The Catholic Church in Great Britain has a great vitality and remarkable qualities. There exists a balanced union within the Church. I really feel like a member of your Church!…over the years here I have read literally thousands of letters dealing with the appointment of bishops and in doing so I felt the heartbeat of the Church in England, Wales and Scotland. And I can tell you that the heartbeat of your Church is healthy, strong, regular and a real pleasure to listen to. You have a beautiful Church which I hope will not fall asleep, but always be awake and vigorous in its mission in announcing the Gospel in the present, while always looking to the future.”
Archbishop Puente added: “What I see as so encouraging is that the Church here fulfils its work in a real sense of unity and collaboration between bishops, priests, religious and laity. On that last point, let me say that the laity is a true blessing for the Church, here it is very strong, generous and intelligent.”
