That is interesting. Such a move makes it possible for an archbishop’s local flock to actually attend the ceremony. But it’s always a bummer to no longer have something given to you by the Pope himself but only by proxy.

Yes, but on the other hand, the universality of the Church is seen more in Rome going out into the world. I call this one a wash, being there are good and bad to both methods.The symbolism of unity and communion between the local church and with the pope seemed more representative in Rome?

There was probably an excess of costly pomp in it. The Archbishops still get to celebrate Mass with the Pope on the feast of Sts P and P in Rome. They then get their pallium after Mass. Not too much is lost.

Local Chicago station mentioned this a little while ago and also mentioned that Archbishop Cupich will be receiving his pallium after he returns from Rome from a Vatican ambassador.

A shame, if considering the meaning of the pallium. I’d always thought it symbolically significant to receive it from the pope.
