Do we see a ray of hope on the horizon? With an archbishop denying communion to gay-rights activists, and another cardinal warning the intelligentsia to stop the dissent…I’m hoping it will not be long before all true shepherds unite with one voice. The silence has been deafening!

I want to say surely it would be appreciated on a human level and the good archbishop is being very courageous, but only doing the job, so to speak, that comes with the mitre. Prayer, more than anything, is our greatest support to them all.
I’ll admit I’m confused. We’ve had rocky times before but have we ever in church history experienced such a division among the episcopate themselves? Perhaps the silence among the orthodox is a result of not wanting to draw further attention to the problems and potential scandal. A few months ago, AB Chaput wrote an article that the Church had abdicated its role in instruction and faith formation. Perhaps we’re seeing the dawn of a new era and Detroit will only be the first, among others, to do a little damage control.

Both Pope John Paul II and now Pope Benedict, have spoken about the New Evangelism. The role of the laity is critical. Not only do we need strong leaders but we must act when they speak. I know some have said in the past that the leadership is lacking. Well, if people are spending less time in Church and more time in the world, listening to the media, it can drown out the Church’s message.
For 40 years, as Catholic Radio host Al Kresta has said, Catholics have had amnesia. We have forgotten a lot of things that are necessary to live as Catholics. The numbers for people going to Confession are down. Even the Pope goes to confession.
I don’t think the Church has abdicated as opposed to being led astray by intelligent dissidents who suggested a few changes in the late 1960s. Even Catholic institutions of higher learning were led astray by false promises of the benefits of academic “freedom.” Just read this statement:

If we are going to solve any problems in the Church, we need to understand how, why and when these problems started.

Many entrenched hierarchical interests were frightened by the changes promised by Vatican II, some believing them misguided, others fearing loss of privilege, and others nostalgic for traditional “certainty” and social status. There has been very little change in the hierarchical and institutional structure of the Church:
Conscience is often denied;

More than half of the baptized (women) suffer a terrible
injustice as they are denied ministry and roles in governance and are effectively disenfranchised;
