Archdiocese of New York tells 31 Catholic schools they face closure, have until January to appeal

The Archdiocese of New York put 31 schools on notice Tuesday that they are on the chopping block.

The Catholic schools, which are designated “at risk” of losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in church subsidies, include 15 in the city.

Why can’t a plan be in place to revitalize Catholic schools instead of shutting their doors? Well, as soon as you can figure out how to raise an extra $12 million dollars then we can talk. The Church has to live in the real world, and we don’t have unlimited money. When we run out of money, we have to make tough decisions, and sometimes that means closing schools or parishes. There’s no way around it, we can’t just not pay for things we use (utilities, staff, supplies, ect.), as that would be stealing.

I am glad that they raise the funding to support hundreds of very worthwhile programs; but when people say we need to make these hard decisions that impact school children, then I want everything evaluated.

I would also add that if a real plan was proposed to not only keep the schools open, but return to the Catholic identity and standards of days gone by, there would be wealthy Catholic *individuals *willing to give $12million out of their own pocket.

Look at EWTN. People have kept that network going. Why? Because it provides true Catholic programming - and people are eager to support that.

God provides. I have no doubt that if the Archdiocese decided it was determined to bring back true Catholic education, it would be wildly successful.

No, I think he’s got it completely. We’ve got people here at CAF questioning everything the bishop’s do, and they don’t even show proper respect. How do we expect the bishops to get anything done when even the most orthodox Catholics won’t even support them?

No I have not. Respect of our bishops has nothing to do with this issue. It should be a given.

Just becuas something is done that you do not like does not allow you to disrespect anyone.

What does showing respect to someone and their office have to do with this discussion anyways? We should always show respect to our bishops, clergy, and religious regardless of our personal opinions.

The closing of schools is a hard thing, but when enrollment is down and there is a lack of money something must be done. I am sure this was not done easily and I trust in the Archbishop and those who worked with him in doing this.

It seems a lot of Catholics feel entitled to certain things but refrain from supporting them through their donations.

I think the only ones who really have a dog in this fight are the ones who live in the areas of these schools that are being closed which, as I do not like within the Archdiocese of New York nor, therefore, in any of the affected areas, I have chosen not to comment.

Here in America, we have the habit of referring to people by their last names. Our President is called Obama; in Catholic press and media, the Pope is referred to as Benedict, Pope John Paul II is referred to as JP2, etc. It’s a matter of speaking, not disrespect. While this disrespect is rampant I would suggest that our hierarchy be treated with respect and their titles used. Fr Joe is fine, his title is there. I never refer to the Pope by name only, nor do I do so with bishops.

Now I will answer you question even though you did not really answer mine.

In answer to your last question. I am a religious brother and currently am assigned to work at one of the Catholic High Schools my order runs.
