It would seem that in many respect animals are wiser than people:
- Animals do not exhibit greed or avarice, but take only what they need, and do not have useless anxiety about the future, e.g. Jesus’ reference to the birds of the air, which take no thought for the future
- Animals do not exhibit pride, vanity or desire for the esteem of others, unlike their human counterparts
- Animals have social and sexual relationships in accordance with the norms of nature, unlike humans, not having sex for recreation
- Animals, when no activity is necessary, can sink into deep contemplation, which is possible only for few humans. What mystic could ever equal a crocodile lying still on the banks of the river for stillness of mind and body?
