Are bikinis always sinful?

We were talking about swimsuits. Generally women care more about the appearance of clothing, the furniture in their houses etc… On the other hand women seem to care less about the aesthetics of their partners. Men are more visual in that regard. But getting back on topic you spoke of swimsuits being functional and I was stating that women choose their swimsuits on how they look as well. A woman may choose a two piece swimsuit because she thinks its prettier than a one piece and attractive on her (nothing wrong with looking attractive). Not because she has a diabolical plot to seduce men.
A woman MAY see the bikini as “prettier” but rarely is a man thinking that the bikini is pretty. He’s thinking it’s sexy, that’s the difference.

As well, most women would be horrified walking among strangers at the beach (or elsewhere) wearing a bra and panties which is for your private moments or your spouse… Yet, a bikini is strikingly similar. You could argue the material or color but it’s practically the same darn thing. This goes for guys wearing “bikini underwear” too. Whats wrong with a modernized version of this…modcloth.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/ladiesswimsuits-opt.jpg

I once had a dream where a man and woman were being married on the beach. A voice from above said “I have selected this man & woman to be the perfect match made in heaven”. The woman was beautiful and was dressed in a very skimpy white bikini. The man was a pirate with a patch over his missing eye, a hook for his missing hand, and a peg leg.

I woke up and over on the night stand was a Bible opened to Matthew 5:27-30
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna.
I went back to sleep and returned to the same scene. I thought “Should a bride be wearing a bikini at a wedding?”. The voice from above said “It’s OK. This is a beach setting and she has attracted the perfect man for her. Of course, he’s missing some body parts as you can see. Modesty prevents me from saying what else was needed to purify this perfect man for her.”

In Love and Responsibility Bl. Pope John Paul wrote that yes women can often not understand the effects on men. They can think they are just looking attractive and not seek to cause lust etc. He notes that they need to become aware of such.

He does a splendid work there in explaining out the sexual values of the body can end up have disproportional emphasis put on them …than should be. I theological work and not easy for all to read -but it is a great work. One does not want the sexual values of the body to displace the person etc
I think that this is a really good quote. It definitely is important for women to know just how in the gutter men’s thought can get. I still don’t think I fully understand it. I believe it to be true but it doesn’t make sense to me:shrug:. This is why I wear a cover-up when I get out of the water and avoid doing cartwheels around the pool :D. Its good to understand the differences between men and women in this regard. A few posters have stated things like women only wear bikinis to seduce men. I’m sure that some women are like this but a lot of women are thinking things like “isn’t my suit cute with my matching beach bag”. They care more about being pretty than seductive.

I ought to not it was not a quote just my remembering the sense of things he said 🙂

Yes I agree not all women are intending to bring about lust in men (one can can sin without such an intention too of course). They may be often not too aware of what they do. The need to know the realities involved…be sensitive to the “weaker sex -in this regard”…

Good way for men to cop-out – and use women as scapegoats.

Yes, there is no other type of bathing apparel available and women don’t buy bikinis for how they look in them. “Sports Illustrated” puts a bikini clad woman on the cover not for sales but because they are concerned about the dangers of tan lines. Very novel.
Oh please.

No one here is endorsing sports illustrated. We are talking about women wearing bikinis to go swimming at the beach or the pool… not to pose for provocative pictures!

I’m sorry if you don’t see the difference, but I would appreciate it if you at least stopped acting like you could read the mind/heart of every girl who chooses to wear a bikini, and making rash accusations based on your assumptions.

It has nothing to do with scapegoats --no wool involved at all.

It has to do with the reality that makes up the very different experiences of the two sexes.

Yep.

My husband has attested to this many times. He said that TRULY lusting after a girl is something that is really NOT that hard not to do, and that when men start talking like this they’re either looking for excuses to do so, or they are simply confusing lust with sexual attraction.

“Every girl”, no. I said a handful may not know what they are doing. Can you tell me how many women don’t look in the mirror before they go out? If you have really convinced yourself that a women does not know the effect she has on men based on the clothing she wears, there is little more I can say. Would you wear a bra and panties to the beach maybe dying them a color you like? How much different is that body coverage from a bikini? Women don’t generally say they wear certain things to attract men. I’ve been with enough of them to know well enough what women do, and why they do it.

You are intellectually dishonest. Based on your own logic a bikini IS “provocative”. All Sports Illustrated does is put a pretty girl on the cover in a bikini. The same bikinis women wear to the beach or pool. “Pose provocative”? Hands on hips or wet hair? By your own words the bikini is provokative.

Yep – big cop-outs. A man lusts – because has allowed himself to lust.

I’d just like to add, that while it may not be in the title, I think this thread can also apply to what men wear to the beach. I’m sure men these days also feel the want to appear attractive (nice abs, ect) Surely, they would be wearing even less than a bikini by showing up in a speedo.

That will still turn heads. And if anybody here thinks that women do not check out men, you are wrong. Women have eyes too, and yes, they are capable of looking and having thoughts aswell. 👍

Just wanted to point that out. Please continue. 😃

Well said.

Sexuality is part of God’s plan for us. It brings men and women together for, primarily, the sake of procreation. But it is just a part of it, and any woman that places too much emphasis on her physical beauty is likely to attract men who may not have the purest motives. Modesty is important as it allows room for personality and spiritual beauty to play a greater role in attraction.

A woman who attracts a man primarily based on her physical beauty may end up with a man who only appreciates her physical beauty. This is something I intend to educate my daughters in, when the time comes.

Very well said and I intend to do the same with my daughter.

I suspect you are quite young, and I’m honestly not in the mood.

Have a good evening.

I agree with all of this.

Not sure how it ties in to wearing a bikini at a pool, but whatever. Nice post.

Theres the real “cop out”. The truth hurts.
Well I wanted to be charitable, which is why I wasn’t blunt in letting you know that I see no point in having this type of discussion with someone who is obviously not extremely mature (due to a young age, nothing wrong with that) and is apparently very emotionally involved in the topic… AND is basing his discussion off of false assumptions, rash generalizations, and uncharitable accusations.

There’s just no point in reasoning with such.

Once again, have a good evening. :tiphat:
