Without profit, none of us would have anything.

Profit means we value the output more than we value the resources expended to create the output.

If there is no profit, then we value the resources expended more than we value the product. Keep doing that, and soon we have nothing.

People who object to prifit will lead us all to starvation and misery.

I would be delighted for someone to tell me how we can live without profit. It has nothing to do with the beast or god’s love. It is simple economics./QUOTE

“Profit is useful if it serves as a means towards an end that provides a sense both of how to produce it and how to make good use of it. Once profit becomes the exclusive goal, if it is produced by improper means and without the common good as its ultimate end, it risks destroying wealth and creating poverty.”
CARITAS IN VERITATE p. 21.

It might be opposed to what you believe in, but it isn’t opposed to the “ought” of love. I think you should study the concept. Love necessitates what i believe in, and it does not oppose individuality once understood in its proper context.

I’m sorry that you are homeless. I know what thats like. Its just a shame that you think that humanity does not have a moral obligation to help you. Of coarse they are free to be selfish, but that doesn’t mean we must sit back and allow people to abuse us. We have what little human rights we have because ordinary people have fought and died for it; and even now, all that we have fought for is being threatened by selfish people that think merely of their own progress. Most people are homeless because you live in an evil world, an evil society that thinks that profit is more important then the well being of their fellow human being. Human beings are evil; they worship the image of the beast. The only reason any of us are going to be saved is because of Gods mercy and love.
I am homeless only because of the Liberal organization known as MADD. I got a DUI in my wifes car and lost my CDL/JOB for 1 year. I hardly ever drink. And DUI laws get tougher every year. And believe me, you will find that probably 90% of all homeless or poor people are actually being oppressed by more law and loss of Liberty. Anyone who has a criminal record can forget about their dreams of excelling, or entrepreneurship. MORE LAW = LESS LIBERTY for ALL!!!
So you are right that most people are homeless because of an “evil world” or “evil society”. But only because nobody has MERCY on those who have made mistakes.
This falls into the liberal platform because peoples INDIVIDUAL privacy is becoming non-existant by liberal socialists. So yes people are losing the rights they fought for. you’re right!
Have you been to any American ghetto’s. If you venture into one, you will find lots of people with broken dreams. These poor souls have been kept down low. The morale is low, income is low, love is low, forgiveness, mercy, everything is low. I believe these people are being kept low by Liberal socialist powers. With no Liberty and no Hope, these peoples are forced into poverty and collect govornment issued food, money, and family planning. They are also kept low so they can be used and fed lies, so they will side with their “big brother”, who always feeds them. (But never frees them).
It dosent have to be this way! If they could actually get jobs without being scrutinized by their criminal records, they would’nt be kept poor, and they could find freedom. They could escape the circle of death they have been pushed into, and held down by socialist scum. They could actually join their local UNION and earn a living like people should.

Furthermore, I think people fail to look ahead into the future. To make a leap towards socialism during a time of globalization? This is insane!!!
I will never put my trust in nations over men!!!
The Beast you mentioned, is it materialism? or greed? If it is you are wrong. It is oppression. Opression breeds HATE!!!

Certainly the Bible and Christian tradition generally. What would science have to say about this? Science doesn’t tell us what we should do. It only tells us things about how the physical world works.

Individualism may be the foundation of American civilization, but that just shows how radically heretical the American ideology is by the standards of traditional Christianity.

St. Paul speaks of the Church as the Body of Christ. We are all organs of that body, not isolated individuals. Individualism is a perversion of Christianity.

Science hasnt told us what to say, no not yet. But it will When it becomes the established religeon. Al Gore has been trying for example to push “the Gaia theory” into the govornment mindset. So science has indeed become a new instrument or template for govornments and societies. One that will replace religeon. How would you like to live in a world where mercy, forgiveness, and love are replaced by more ‘logical’ ideas. Ones that have ‘proven’ more effective or that ‘statistics’ ‘prove’ more beneficial. I believe in a more personal and ‘Individual’ type world. A GOD based world.
Look at the push for defeating man made global warming (MMGW). The beginning of the end…

When you live in a world reaching or trying to reach globalization, which will use “global warming” as a tool for world peace, and a means to unite, Catholocism meets its rival. We must decide; The Church and Gods chosen race, or the lie of world peace… We are setting the stage for the Churches destruction. Environmentalism and Socialism are the devils platform.

A person from Catholic.com once said that there are three kinds of lies: lies, D@#$%d lies and statistics. Science needs statistics which is scary. Also, what did JP2 say or Ben16 say? It went something like this: faith without reason leads to fundamentalism and reason without faith leads to atheism and relativism (in need of correction here:D).

I am not too convinced about Global Warming either. I wish to point that most scientific discussion involves dissent which has been non-existent in this debate. I do feel that environmentalism is good because humans are entrusted to have role a role in being the stewards of creation.

I feel for your position. The criminal justice system like jails and such has been to rehabilitate the criminal in the modern age. Obviously after hearing a story like yours, some work really needs to be done.

God Bless

Even this most socialist of presidents has publicly stated the government ruins free enterprise. This is a given.

However, people are already carping about the disastrous results of his policies, failing to understand that those are the very same policies they so fervently (if hypocritically) support.

Well, we have seen a steady increase in prosperity and wealth crateion in the capitalist societies. Those results are exactly opposite of what he wants about. So, using Benedict’s logic, we can conclude in capitalist societies:
  1. Profit is not an exclusive goal.
  2. It is achieved with proper means.
  3. It has common good a sits end.
So, what’s the problem?

Taking Biblical quotes out of context always leads to bad interpretation. The Church has nothing against wealth in itself.

Also please acquaint yourself with your own Church’s history. Capitalism arose from Christianity. Again, read D’Souza’s What’s So Great About Christianity.
Wealth, like poverty, is neither good nor evil. Wealth will not damn you; poverty will not sanctify you. Evil acts do not automatically emanate from those who have wealth. Good acts do not automatically emanate from those who are in poverty.

Peace.

A Poverty that is the infliction of a corrupt system of greedy people is evil.

A Poverty that is the infliction of a corrupt system of greedy people is evil.
How is poverty inflicted, and where is it inflicted?

If poverty is inflicted, did prosperity exist before poverty was inflicted? Where? When?

This could possibly be a case.

A company is doing pretty good. They decide that they can make more money by laying off everybody who makes too much money. They do so and hire a whole new group of workers and saves money. Without minimal wage, this can lead to near slavery. The disordered desire for money can cause harm like this.

Well, that’s an interesiing idea, but we don’t see it in practice. So, it’s not evidence that a system is inflicting poverty.

Minimim wage is an interesiing issue. Minimum wage is $7.25. Under your theory, MW is what prevents firms from lowering wages. So, shouldn’t all wages be $7.25? Isn’t that the point to which the firms would lower the wage? If that is not the case, how come?

Arent there such things as workers rights? I know through Unions, things like this are prevented by strike. Are Union rights considered stricktly liberal? I dont think so.

Poverty is DEFINANTLY not inflicted by capitalistic and conservative ideals. These ideas are the natural flow of humanity, and are in accordance with God.
Now if you look at the other (far-left) side, you might just find your inflictions…

Calling all Christians on this thread, please answer me this…

Do you not think that profit for the equal benefit of humanity as a whole is more reflective of Christian morality, rather than profit for the sake of individuals who are lucky enough to have successful and competitive businesses?

Do you not think a society that works for the equal dignity of the material good out of respect for the spiritual good of humanity as whole is more reflective of Christian ethics, rather than a survival of the fittest society that feeds crumbs to the poor, while some not at all, and is also happy to see people homeless despite living in some of the richest countries in the world?

Any profit that does not exist for the equal service of all humankind, but is instead given to the selfish ends of business men alone, is not good. It is theft.

Any life giving resources (food water homes) that is exploited for the soul purpose of building up profit for the sake of individual economic empires at the expense of others, rather then for the equal good of all humanity, is theft.

Business merely for the sake business is wrong.

If we work at all, then it must be for the objective good and that **good **alone. For instance, the good of all humanity out of respect of God.

Love your neighbor as you would your brother.

I Leave you now with some quotes to consider…

“If the citizens themselves devote their life to matters of trade, the
way will be opened to many vices. Since the foremost tendency of
tradesmen is to make money, greed is awakened in the hearts of the
citizens through the pursuit of trade. The result is that everything in
the city will become venal; good faith will be destroyed and the way
opened to all kinds of trickery; each one will work only for his own
profit, despising the public good; the cultivation of virtue will fail
since honor, virtue’s reward, will be bestowed upon the rich. Thus, in
such a city, civic life will necessarily be corrupted.”

—ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
On Kingship (II, 3)

“Catholics, so long as they held closely to the social teachings of the
Church, could never act in favour of capitalism.”

—Amintore Fanfani

“To try to run an economy by the highest Christian principles is certain
to destroy both the economy and the reputation of Christianity.”

—Michael Novak

Christianity had 1,800 years to bring prosperity. It failed. Capitalism has brought more prosperity to more people than any other system in history. It has also implemented more Christian ideals than any other system in history.

If I were being paid by Christians to further their cause, I’d take credit for capitalism rather than whine about it. For example, the Church’s desire to keep its property and riches was a powerful factor in the development of property rights, which are fundamental to capitalism.

Are you serious?:rotfl:
Sure. Just show us where it is happening. And if capitalism as a system inflicts poverty, then show us where it is happening on a wdespread and systemic basis. And if it is systemic, perhaps you can expain why wages are not all $7.25/hour?

For example, the Church’s desire to keep its property and riches was a powerful factor in the development of property rights, which are fundamental to capitalism.
Property rights for the dignity of an individual or organization is one thing; especially for an organization that works for the holy good. But property rights at the expense and exclusion of human dignity and equality, is evil. And it is theft. All the resources in the earth, exist for the equal good and survival of all humanity.

Oh, joy, the truth comes out…
I cant help but to notice it seems like you think there is a set number of ‘Dollars’ and that the “business men” are sort of hogging all the money. I think that the whole concept of the dollar system is that it works as collateral. Anyone can earn it or spend it.

Wouldnt true theft be; The govornment taking money from the people who set up smart ways in their lives and channeling it to those who are less fortunate? Wheather you think it sounds great or not, its still theft…

If you want to set-up private donation programs for the poor thats one thing. But what were looking at in your statement seems to mean that you want even the middle classes to gain some of those ‘stolen’ dollars. The poor need help, but the middle class???

This sounds like a bad move. Money dosent save souls!!!

I meant to show with that example is that the disordered desire for money hurts others. Most business and usually the most successful ones do strive for certain principles that coincidentally relate to Christianity.

Look at today’s businesses. Sure capitalism pays more for better work, but that does not hold true with all workers. Why do part time workers get health insurance or are paid higher wages? My only answer is morality in the workplace.

Let’s say there is a car maker. They pay every plant worker minimal wage with no vacation (except the federally mandated ones!!!), sick time (except FMLA), zero raises (except when mandated), no breaks (except when mandated), and etc. Would you purchase a vehicle from them or the other company with a good business model that treats people as human beings not only workers?

My belief is that capitalism is a great economic policy that certainly has it faults. Capitalism still needs regulation to protect from those evil-doers (bad bosses, excessive speculation, etc) for the good of humanity.

That’s my opinion.

God Bless
