Are Catholic men being turned into wimps?

It’s ironic that such insecurity is actually not masculine but is rather a symptom of the type of person I mentioned above raised without a proper male role model who as a result tries to hard to differentiate themselves from women. And he is destined to be frustrated due to the fact that modern women are determined to make themselves as much like men as possible. .
There is much truth here. Women becoming more like men, and men becoming more effeminate. This was never meant to be in the beginning, as Pope John Paul II showed in his Theology of the Body. God made man in his image, male and female he created us. Men and women together are meant to image here and now the Trinity. Masculinity and feminity were not meant to develop in isolation from each other. Competitiveness undermines love.

I just want to add I don’t like the article in the OP as the author has in my opinion succumbed to and is promoting the false form of masculinity I mentioned in my earlier post.

I think there has been some misunderstandings in the past where men and women were put into a box… like a woman would be told: you are only created to help the man, you dont need an education. and a man was supposed to be an absentminded provider who had cigars and drinks with his male colleagues…
I dont see the golden age behind us any where, is what I am trying to say.
Also I wonder why there is talk of men being feminized (as if feminised in itself is a bad thing) but not about women being masculinised. Today we have women working as leaders of banks, politicians, we have them wearing suits and short hair.
I believe the potential of flexibility has always been there in both men and women.
That particular scenario was never true, despite what feminists wanted people to believe.

Men and women may have been created equal in dignity; in no way does this make them the same or interchangeable. And yes, feminized men is a bad thing—as is masculinized women. If women had any pride in being women, we would not be in such dire straits.

Feminism has done untold damage to both sexes, and continues to do so.

I agree, especially about this so-called “golden era”…The only people I ever hear talking about it are feminists and/or modernists apparently looking for a good straw man to help pad their arguments.

Boys are filled with angst? and dropping out? In Europe the teen suicide is highest among girls and angst and panic attack is as big with girls as with boys. The rootless culture and lack of religious and spiritual identity are reasons for this.
Girls rule? how so? I am fairly young still and I have never ruled anyone. I have gone about my business and tried to do well in school as well as socially. Is it bad for a girl to have self-confidence? Should she shrink so that boys can feel they “the man”? I dont get this mentality.
In everyone of my schools I always felt that boys were looked at with particular tolerance and encouragement by the teachers and the other students. It was pressumed a boy would be gifted and smart whereas the girls would have to work hard to gain the same position.
I know in the US its different probably, but I think the tendencies I have seen in my own life were not to be envied by americans.

What do you mean girls rule?

In my own campus there is no “girls rule” and no “guys rule” ( I assume you think its just as catastrophic if guys “rule” right?)

In other words… I dont really follow your basic assumptions.
I wasn’t speaking to the situation in Europe, or in your own region in Europe. I was speaking about the United States. Regarding the “crisis in girl’s confidence” you reference, yes we did have a bout with that rather severely starting in 1991 when the Association of American College Women published their famous study entitled, “Shortchanging Girls, Shortchanging America.” Its thesis held that girls faced systematic discrimination in education and this was most evident by evaluating their self esteem. It influenced the passage of the Gender Equity Act of 1994 which strengthened funding for a raft of new programs and enhanced ones like Title IX which sought to advance the interests of girls in the educational framework and strengthen their self esteem. Note one problematic thing to note about this line of thinking: a correlation between low self-esteem and better academic performance does not exist. Even in the AACW’s study you find such things that the group in it with the lowest self-esteem (Asian females) outperformed all others academically. The group with the highest self-esteem (black males) were outperformed by all other groups. This linkage between academic performance and self-esteem has always been a canard, yet still the goal persists and educational policy is still concerned with a goal to boost and enhance the self-esteem of girls, almost exclusively. The idea remains that girls must encouraged in order to normalize the situation with boys, who correspondingly need no encouragement.

Already by 1990, however, it had become clear that the situation regarding the genders had begun to undego a rapid reversal. Starting in 1969, for whatever reason, girls’ academic scores (which were lagging behind boys) began a steady upward climb. By 1990 girls had achieved parity in reading and writing, and were behind in math and science. Today the average American 12th grade boy reads and writes like an 8th grade girl. He is starting to fall behind in math and science. On college campuses, which is where I asked you to look for the phrase, “Girls rule”, women now comprise 60% of enrollment (and rising). Radical feminists exercise control of every liberal arts faculty, effectively, and dominate campus thought and culture. Womanhood itself has become its own academic discipline with degrees availiable in women’s studies. No such thing exists for men.

In America today boys are far more likely than girls to drop out of high school, they are far more likely than girls not to enroll in higher education, and they are far more likely than girls to drop out of higher education.

In politics, social life after college, and increasingly in business, women’s preferences shape American life. Women wanted abortion; so we have it. Women wanted careers and equity and pay, so we have the age of two working parents. Easy divorce laws? They were argued from the standpoint of the victimized wife needing to extract herself from a bad marriage. In our politics we call certain things “women’s issues”, and they are abortion, education, and health care. In response to them we’ve written abortion into the US Constitution, massively increased spending on education and health care, and now we’re seriously entertaining new entire entitlements in education and health care. Every aspect of American life has some kind of group, association, or government program designed to cater exclusively toward women. Almost everywhere we find such a grouping that’s exclusively male it is under attack on grounds of discriminatory bias. Famously we had a situation regarding Citadel College and Virginia Military Institute, traditionally male military academies of Southern heritage, that recieved federal funds. It is problematic, even sometimes illegal, to fund exclusively male endeavors while to do so for women is something to be encouraged. Women, after all, have special status as a legal minority (despite the fact that women are now and have always been the majority).

Here’s the coup d’grace: women decide life, exclusively.

Women weild enormous power as a group, possessing a huge amount of institutional power behind them. Meanwhile our men are becoming “man-childs”, perpetual adolescents almost, leading a single life well into their 30’s and 40’s, if they ever “settle down” at all, devoted to video gaming and the whatnots of the perpetual Maxim magazine lifestyle. The model of the typical educated professional male is the proverbial “metrosexual”, a somewhat emasculated male figure. Think Alec Balwin, not James Bond.

So, that’s the situation over here across the pond, Grace, from whence I speak.

Mystagogia, your words are powerful and tragic. With not one dotted “i” would I disagree. At my last Christmas mass, I was outraged that feminists and weak-minded men had butchered the lyrics of Christmas carols for “inclusivity”. It made me regret my attendance. We live in Joel Osteen’s and Oprah’s America, where patriotism, judgment and hard critical thinking are passe. And masculinity is shameful! Rob:mad:

Well, we all know that little boys are really nothing more than misbehaving little girls with ADHD.

Bring on the Ritalin!

More to the point: women in America control the bedroom. It is sad, but true. Millions of American men live in marriages that are sexually unfulfilling - or there is no sex at all. It is the one thing that men want out of marriage - but for many men, it is the one thing that they don’t get.

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach recently wrote a book called “The Kosher Sutra”. In it, he quotes a statistic that nearly one-third of American marriages are sexless. I don’t know where he gets his statistics, or how accurate they are - but I believe him.

I live in a totally sexless marriage, and I know other men in my community who live with the same. We have been denied sex by our wives - in some cases, for many, many years. I am not even permitted to sleep in the same bedroom, or use the same shower as my wife. When I try to use my own bedroom or shower facilities, I am threatened with divorce. No, I am not exaggerating.

Why do we put up with this? Why don’t we demand change, or simply walk out?Men in other cultures (traditional or otherwise) would have never put up with this.

For some of us, it is out of obedience to our marriage vows. For others, it is out of hope that things will change - but it never, ever does. I actually count myself among both camps. I stay in my marriage, out of sheer fealty to Christ, and the hope that there will be some sort of reward in Heaven for my years of devotion to the Sacrament of Marriage.

========================================================

A wise old catechist once told me that marriage has 3 purposes: to restrain men, protect women, and rear children. I understand the point behind restraining men: many men would never become monogomous, if it weren’t for the institution marriage. But today, instead of restraining men, marriage serves to emasculate men.

The truth is this: **American men have become emasculated. **They put up with the intolerable, day after day. If you are a married man in America, you will likely be treated with disrespect in your home, and scorn and derision in public. Our culture denegrates the role of the traditional father, and elevates that of the single male, with his “Maxim” lifestyles, as another poster alluded to.

It is a miracle that any man in America wants to get married. That is why it is not so surprising, when so many men refuse to live up to their parental responsibilities. And that is fundamentally why so many children are being raised today in one-parent households. In many parts of the U.S., less than half of the children are being raised in traditional two-parent households.

Many men simply won’t stick around for the abuse and humiliation, and walk out on their families. Hence, a new generation of Americans will never know their fathers - or what it takes to be a father. And the cycle will simply repeat itself - or get worse, if that is even possible.

So don’t put up with it then. Since you don’t seem to have much left to lose at this point, I think you can afford to call her bluff on this. Even if initially she’s offended, it may be what she’s actually been hoping you woud do all along. She thought she married a man, after all. Don’t let her kick you out of the bedroom. It’s your room too, your bed.

mrpathetic on another thread said:
“My guess is that there must be a reason your wife kicked you out of the bedroom. Do you know what this is?”

The reason why? She finds me weak, passive, inadequate, and unfulfilling. And she has told me so, on several occasions.

Have you already decided that it’s too late, or are you still hoping to change things? I can’t speak for your wife, of course. But I know that if it were me, in this same situation as regards sharing/not sharing a bed, shower, etc., I would not see your submissiveness as you being considerate or respecting my threats of divorce. I would think basically that you’d given up, that you didn’t see our marriage as something worth fighting for. There’s no way I’d be able to respect that.

You may very well have a serious mental disorder, but even so, I don’t believe it’s your disorder itself that’s causing the problems. It’s more about how you deal with your limitations; and your behavior. You said so yourself in the above quote.

You just sound to me like you’ve completely given up. I do feel for you, but I also feel for your family. As the husband, father and head of the family, you don’t really have the luxury of getting so wrapped up in your misery. You’re suppoed to be strong for them. Even if your heart isn’t in it, you could still try. Fake it if you have to…the important thing is you’re trying. As long as you refuse to try you are failing your wife and your family. Like C.S. Lewis said, we usually become that which we are pretending to be (or something to that effect).

I’ve been following your posts here for awhile and I really think it’s not too late for you and your wife. As long as you’re still drawing breath, there’s still a chance that your marriage can be redeemed.

So, where were the men while America was changing into… ehh… suppressing the real men? Maybe there never were any real men that stood up for their good male characteristics?
Sorry. As you can hear I think that the “blame it on the feminism” as like a conspiracy theory… Anyone who buys it really think that both men and women are unable to think.
As for me I choose to blame the culture of death and I see both men and women as **equally **victims of the tragedy of this mindset. Now the women suffer from the sins that used to be more prominent among men: putting career before family, money before parenthood, ego before the others, sexual pleasure before responsibility and love. And men have …hmm… remained the same… or become more passive than ever. So now everyone do what they please in the individualistic culture… the culture of the flesh.

If anyone wants to get the standards up again for men and women they ought to start with themself and their own gender instead of pointing at the others.

Also, isn’t its still so that most politicians are males…?
It’s a scandal to me when I see Catholics blame women and the “feministic agenda” for the sins of a whole society… does anyone really care about the lack of commitment from both men and women that lead up to abortion?

The place I ever see a real battle between the genders it’s on these Catholic boards.

You position has implied that when women express a greviance, it’s men’s fault and it’s authentic. And if men express a greviance, it’s men’s fault, and it’s baseless.

I have not given up hope, but I have little hope left for my marriage.

I have tried being more assertive in the past, and it has only made things worse. My only become more hostile and vindictive. She threatened me with divorce last November, during my last attempt at assertiveness - and she was not bluffing.

Truth be told, I came to the realization many years ago, that my wife does not want a real man in the house. She wants one who is totally malleable, and that she can control through guilt and manipulation. There are women who are like this, and she is one of them. She wants a man who will pay the bills, do the chores, keep his mouth shut, and do whatever she dictates to him. My wife realized that I was like this 20 years ago, when she married me, and I am convinced that she married me specifically for this purpose.

I can either live with this, or walk out. I won’t do that, nor will I do anything that will trigger a divorce; in my mind, morally those are the same thing. So I simply endure the status quo, year after year.

As I stated in other posts, I have come to view this as a form of redemptive suffering. JPII talked about this in several of his encyclicals. Suffering can lead us closer to Christ. The suffereing can come in many forms - physical, mental, and emotional. My marriage has brought me closer to Christ - even though it has led my wife to abandon Him.

I can only focus on salvaging what is left of my marriage; true happiness is beyond reach at this point. Again, I look for happiness in the next world, not the current one.

I trace it back to two things: first, a culture of war during the first part of the 20th century, in which males were sent off to far-away countries to fight, most likely to die, leaving their wives in charge of both the home and the work. We had already had three generations of fatherless families before feminism came along; feminism was just speaking the reality that was already there - women were doing all of the work, both at home and in the workplace - and they wanted the credit and the wages that went along with it.

The second thing is the rise of pornography (which is essentially the idea that sex is for fun), which I think is what led directly to the legalization of birth control (which makes it possible to have sex for fun, rather than for the increase of the family) and consequently, abortion, because when the birth control fails, both the man and the woman feel entitled to their money’s worth with regard to the birth control - if the birth control fails, they feel justified in having an abortion, because that child was never supposed to have existed, anyway.

Ok, that’s good. Focus on salvaging your marriage. Stop thinking and talking about this “true happiness”…That’s a mirage anyway. Your responsibility is just to do whatever you can to save your marriage and your wife.

Feminism actually started in the 1800’s, it did however only gain influence due to the fact that millions of men died fighting for their countries during the two world wars and ones who were left were sick of fighting by the end. The wars gave the feminists the advantages they needed to have success in pushing their misguided ideas, but the ideas themselves preceded the wars.

***Your insights are interesting, jmcrae…

When I think of the feminist movement, I think that it was intended to start off as an equality based movement, mainly for voting rights and equal pay for doing basically the same types of jobs as men. Ok, so far so good. Women being able to vote, women being given equal pay for working, given college opportuniities…all good things to happen to society. But, somewhere along the way, the equality movement turned into an anger movement…or a movement about revenge. When I think of modern day ‘feminists’ I see anger, revenge…an entire movement built around killing innocent life, preventing it, and inching men out of their babies’ lives? A movement around this?? The movement has to be cloaked in anger and revenge…how else could one be motivated to kill babies, and promote fatherless families? (the revenge is towards men, if that isn’t clear lol) What’s sad though is that the women end up paying the most…the very people the likes of Planned Parenthood, etc want to ‘help,’ end up getting hurt the most through their twisted agenda.

How scary…how sad. I am grateful for the strides that women have made throughout history. Women were permitted to be beaten by their husbands a century ago, and no one thought anything of it–it was a ‘private’ matter. Women couldn’t vote, or hold jobs…or go to college. I don’t wish for those days, when women were considered property, and had to ask permission from a man to go to the grocery store–no thanks. But, to see what was supposed to be an equality movement, and not so much equality of the sexes, as much as equal treatment for human beings…turn into radical feminism…with abortion at the top of its agenda, saddens me to the core. They think they are helping us women…and they are not. They make us look like fools, and what’s worse, make us look like we yearn to be like men. I don’t want to be a man! My husband is very much a masculine man, and while I’m a strongminded woman, I would NEVER take away his masculinity. He is the spiritual head of household and my rock. At the same time, I am very much an independent woman, and I think that we homestly have best of both worlds, when I think about our marriage.

But, could I become the feminist woman of today? Sure, I could. But, what is to be gained? You know, I listened to a fascinating homily at mass last night. The priest talked about how the breakdown of family has been and will continue to be the decline of society. Oh the radical feminists don’t want to hear that, why? Because they obviously don’t believe a family is needed today. But, it is. Look back at our ancestors who came to this country–and wow, the large families…the extended family-ship that existed…it was the rock of america.

I am optimistic though. God will not be mocked. Just remember that…whenever you feel hopeless, God will not be mocked, and His Son conquered death and evil for us. I do see radical feminism as an evil. The feminist movement didn’t start out that way, though…the intentions*** were very good when the feminist movement came on the scene. But, the road to hell is paved with ‘good intentions.’ :o

Just my ramblings for the night!

Really? That’s*** it***? Huh…I guess we’re simpler beasts than I thought…

Stupid me! I always thought it had to do with Love! 😛

Rube that I am!

One would think, then, that men wouldn’t bother with marriage at all, since sex is their primary goal. One would also think that if these statistics were more widely stated, we might have more priests. Not good ones perhaps, but I’m sure some would figure they might as well take a vow of celibacy if they were going to have to be that way regardless.

I moved to the USA from Europe some 12 years ago, and I was surprised to see that the men-women power balance is different in the USA, than in Eastern Europe where I originally am from. It is indeed true, that I have heard of more cases of women cheating on their husbands or denying sex to them, than men cheating on their wives or physically abusing them. I have seen women in the USA whom shamelessly and adeptly gamed the system, taking advantage of laws specifically designed to put women at an advantage (something called Violence Against Women Act or similar). A friend of mine was badly burned by these laws recently. Although it’s just an individual example, it illustrates many of the common problems in the USA. It started like this: they had 2 children, and my friend (the husband) wanted more. However, his wife didn’t want more children and she controlled the situation. Finally, the husband gallantly chose to have a vasectomy, so that his wife wouldn’t have to deal with the side-effects of the Pill. Part of the wife’s reason for not wanting more children had to do with lifestyle and an affluent living. She continued to spend on clothes, fashion, hairdresser, furniture, she used the better car, while my friend stayed pretty frugal and even took on a second job in the evenings, to pay the bills. Then, his wife started to work on an advanced degree (my friend already had one), and thus the husband took care almost exclusively of the children, often leaving the house with them while his wife was studying for exams. But even before, he has always been an exemplary spouse and father, doing his fair share of housework and caring for the children. Some time into this period, while the wife was studying beside working, and the husband worked two jobs and took care of the children, the wife stopped marital intimacy. Little did the husband know that she was also having an affair. When the husband received an exciting job offer somewhere else, one that meant a major step in his career, he discussed it with his wife. Together, they decided that the husband will take the job and move alone for the first year in order to try it out, and the wife with children will move after him after the first year, if indeed everything works out nicely with the husband’s new job. Then, while he was making arrangements (new and very good job offer for his wife at the new place built on her freshly obtained advanced degree, school for children), the wife decided that she wanted a divorce. However, she didn’t have the guts to tell her husband about her affair which was her real reason for divorce. Instead, she claimed that her husband abandoned her by moving somewhere else, and she found an attorney with the help of whom she absolutely and shamelessly ripped off her husband: she kept the house, custody of the children, and she sued for an inordinate portion of financial assets (retirement funds etc). She even asked for alimony, in addition to child support. You see, she was a poor abandoned mother and wife in the eyes of law, and there are specific laws designed to protect and give the upper hand to such women. On top of all, she tarnished the good name of my friend - she painted him as a bad guy who abandoned his wife and children. My friend, still unaware (perhaps aware, but not wanting to believe?) of his wife’s affair, pulled all the stops out to reconcile and keep the family together. Although initially they planned that they would possibly reunite the family outside the USA, where my friend had this high-ranking job and an excellent job offer for his wife, and he no longer had his original job where his family was located (due to Hurricane Katrina), he had two excellent job offers in two other cities in the USA, and his wife wanted to move somewhere else anyway. He also offered to move back with his family and take whatever job available, just so that they would stay together and raise the children together. But, no, his wife was adamant on divorcing him, and she even turned their older son against him. She insisted that he abandoned her, and kept her affair in secret. Now, my friend is abandoned, he lost his children, his older one totally turned against him (somehow she didn’t succeed in turning the younger one against him), and if he is to ever consider marriage again with someone else, he better remember that he had vasectomy. 😦

It’s in individual story, but I believe we can observe the same elements over and over again - women controlling the bedroom, reproductive choices, and ripping off their husbands with the help of biased laws. Women keeping custody of their children, no matter what. Even when they were the ones who dumped their husbands.

Disclaimer: I do not hate women. My mother raised my sister and me alone, after my father left us. I know what it means for a mother to be alone and struggle alone to raise her children - my mother did it.

P.S. Oh how I love VP Joe Biden, who invented VAWA (Violence Against Women Act), and the new hate crimes bills pushed by his gang!

Truly a sad story. But I think we’re talking about a couple different things here. “Women controlling the bedroom” as you put it, is mr.pathetic’s skewed spin on his own situation, which he applied in general to the entire American public a few posts ago. That’s just, in my opinion, a psychological and rhetorical phenomenon called transference.

Now women having complete control over their “reproductive rights” is an abortion issue. I agree with you that women keeping custody of their children, no matter what, in a divorce is just one part of the horrible no-fault divorce laws in America. These laws actually encourage divorces.

Claire, don’t you think the “not tonight, darling” thing is a specific female weapon, just like physical violence is a specific male weapon in marriages? Not exclusively, but way more preponderently used by wifes and husbands, respectively.

Gosh, I just remembered another sad story. An acquaintance of mine was caught by his wife with another woman in the couple’s bedroom, in the couple’s bed, and they divorced after some 25 years of marriage. The man said that his wife totally denied him marital intimacy for more than one year. There was no health reason for this, from either spouse’s part. It’s still very dumb what he did, cheating and even bringing the other woman into the couple’s bed. Apparently, he just couldn’t handle it, going without marital intimacy for no reason.
