Are Catholics allowed to say bad words?

Okay i get it, its vulgar and impolite. But my question is if it’s a sin or not. If not I will continue using these words regardless of what other people in society think.

The mere fact that you are asking the question tells me that you already know it is wrong.

It appears you are wanting some sort of validation from unknown posters on a Catholic board to tell you it is ok.

If you’re that worried about it, ask a priest. Then you will have a definitive answer.

Those who are against “naughty language”: what is your problem with it? Yes, you quote the Bible where it says not to employ vulgar language. That is not my question. My question is: why do you think the Bible says that?

To obey a Bible verse just for the sake of obeying it is one thing… to engage with the principle that underlies it, that is another.

Why is there any need to use vulgar language? Respect and acceptance does not come from being particularly vulgar towards others. Why allow others to judge you upon the language you convey? I also see it as not quoting the Bible, I see it as quoting the word of God and as I mentioned from James 1:26 if you do not protect your tongue from saying deceitful things then your religion is worthless, unless of course its a one off incident and you confess it as a sin, learn from it and avoid it from then onwards.

Just wanted to make sure you guys seen my last post if you haven’t.

I would like to include some more examples of how I use these words in my everyday life.

When my mom tells me that we’re going on a family vacation to another country, I would reply with " F yeah!"

When I get back home from the store and realize I forgot something that needed to buy, I would say to myself " Aw F It, I’ll go back tomorrow."

When I realize that my unfinished homework was going to be due today, I would say something like " S^it, I totally forgot about it".

When I see an advertisement on tv of people claiming they got ripped muscles by using the shake weight, I would laugh and say " bulls^it".

When people reach their teenage years it is often considered “cool” or “funny” to use vulgar language, I will admit I was at that stage too and I regret it completely. I was always brought up not to swear but you sort of get pulled into peer pressure and this can affect how you communicate with others.

As I have said there is no need for vulgarity. I often now have to tell my parents off for using bad language, You would not have heard Jesus stand in front of crowds swearing would you? I do not know how others actually see it but it comes across to me as a Sin.

Indeed, but I think that if we examine why we actually use, or at least begin to use, vulgar reasons then we’ll see it pretty clearly.

It seemed like swearing started among everyone I knew at about the time they turned 13. It was “cool” because it was not allowed, disrepectful, “edgy,” and showed that the person didn’t really care what “adults” thought of how they acted.

I tend to think that it persists among adults out of habit mostly, but some of those reasons seem to persist in some degree.

I would hesitate to call it sinful without qualification - the sinfulness would have to come from intentions when cursing (is it done because it is thought to be bad) or from a lack of trying to avoid offending those who would be offended. But I also think that as something that is rude, is intentionally rude, and came into existence for the purpose of being rude, it should generally be avoided.

I’m not directly insulting anyone when I curse. I don’t say " f you" to anyone or call someone " a F-ing idiot". But yeah I’ll be sure to talk to a Priest about it.
