Are Communion Services ok ?

But what is a ‘just cause’?
Redemptionis Sacramentum certainly doesn’t encourage daily Communion outside of Mass if Mass can be celebrated on Sunday.

I’ve experienced the abuse, when I was a member of a linguistically based “Catholic Community”, of seeing my community have a Sunday Celebration of the Word with Communion when a priest who spoke French wasn’t available to celebrate Mass. This in spite of the fact that all the members spoke English as their second language and had to drive past one, two or even, in some cases, four or five English Churches where Mass was being celebrated in order to attend the Liturgy of the Word. I never bothered to go unless I was tasked to read or be EMHC but even when I had to go to the LoW, my children and I still attended Mass elsewhere.
Good for you Phemie, You and your children did the right thing.

Once again we have Catholics that were not taught properly. They were under the pain of mortal sin to attend one of those Churches where Mass was being held. The fact that they attended a Communion Service does not fulfill their obligation to go to Mass on Sunday. Now they have even a greater problem because they received Holy Communion when they shouldn’t have. They passed up 2 to 5 Churches with Mass ! ! !
Even if they could not understand English, they were still obliged to attend.
They still could follow the Mass.

Unfortunately, that is a big problem IMHO. Good catechesis would have been not to have the LoW mentioned by Phemie and for that community to be reminded Mass was available in nearby churches.

That’s how it should be, but unfortunately the bishops of Canada have not always agreed. I’m looking for my copy of a Liturgy of the Word ritual book published by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Western Canada that I found floating around the parish office. That volume categorically stated that it was more important to gather as a community than to attend Mass in another parish. This was published in the late 70s early 80s and I’m not sure that all the priests who were around at that time have received the new memo.😦

I had my hands on this recently and will quote you the exact text when I find it again.

Can you presume (CCC#2478) that those who attended the LoW with Communion in their own community did not later in the same canonical day, as you did, participate at Mass and recieve Communion a second time?

Canon 917 makes such a practice licit:
A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of can. 921, §2.

But the point is that the very idea of a CS leads to these conclusions. Why don’t we just pray the prayer of the church together instead?
No. It’s still a false dichotomy. A CS is infinitely more than the “prayer of the church” because it includes Holy Communion.

Yes, I can presume such a thing because I was involved in the preparation for these liturgies. It was definitely seen as more important to worship in French, regardless of whether that was Mass or Liturgy of the Word, than to attend Mass in any other language. That was the mindset.

Some folks did 40 minutes of highway driving to come to the city to attend this LoW. In the process they passed by several communities with parishes offering Mass. To be precise, only 3 or 4 families who worshipped in this ‘community’ which used a school auditorium, could do so without driving/walking past at least 1 Catholic church offering Mass. And those 3 or 4 families lived across from the school and 2 blocks from the Catholic church with which our community was affiliated and where all our sacraments of initiation were recorded.

Sorry Matthew, I’m not up on the abbreviations. Please give me some help here,
thanks,
Mike

In order to unite all the different faith traditions, our Church thought it would be a good idea if we became more like them, they pretty much accomplished that, I’m in a struggle at my Parish to make it more “Catholic”. The biggest trouble is, folks don’t know what it is to be a real Catholic. Our church for all intents is pretty much Protestant. A person would need to be 55 to 60 years old to have any memory of the Roman Catholic Church.

Are you of the opinion that these people did attend a mass at another Parish?

My church has three Communion services a week. Mass is always said on sunday.
I have read that in cases where mass is on Sunday, communion services should be discouraged. Is this true?

Is a parish wrong if they hold a communion service if the same parish has mass every Sunday?
Of what I’ve read, no one asked if you have a pastor at your church, and if you do where is he when the cs is being done. There is a parish near by that the priest takes a day off and they have a cs on that day even though the priest may be less than 50 feet away in the rectory. Is this all right? I don’t think so.

I don’t see why they would not be OK. One of the parishes where I live does not have a priest to say mass each morning - on the days he is absent a communion service is held.
You note parishes, more than one. It is wonderful to be devoted to your own parish, as am I. That being said, my parish has a mass on two days during the weekdays. I’m a retired guy and I like to attend mass daily if possible. I end up usually going to my parish only one day during the week and I go to another parish three days on weekdays. I am really devoted to both parishes.
I have seen problems with Communion Services, the biggest problem is Self Communication by the EMHC who is conducting the Communion Service, You are never to “take” Holy Communion, you should always “receive” Holy Communion. A person is never to reach in a Ciborium and give yourself Holy Communion.

**In extreme circumstances Communion Servies are acceptable in the absence of a priest on Sunday or Holy Day.

Many people have come to expect Holy Communion be offered every day. There is nothing in Catholic teachings that would say the faithful needs to receive Holy Communion everyday.

If you believe otherwise…please note the document where it states that Catholics need to receive the Holy Eucahirst EVERY DAY.**

I know of nowhere where it states that Catholics need to receive the Eucharist every day. However, one could easily counter that there is nothing which states that Catholics are not to take communion every day. In this day and age when faith the world over is declining why anyone would want to come out against communion services where the faithful can receive the body and blood of our Blessed Lord is quite beyond me. Such a desire on the part of the faithful should be celebrated not put down.

I have looked upon this thread with interest and as in elsewhere on this forum, I have noticed a disturbing presumption of impropriety on behalf of clergy rather than the presumption that they are doing things properly and within their rights. One of the tenants of Christian Charity is that one should have the presumption of good rather than the intent.

Finally, the bottom line is that as long as the Bishop permits it and things are done properly, communion services are entirely licit. If they are not done properly, that is not the fault of the communion service anymore than a Mass which is not done properly is the fault of the Mass. I have not heard anyone advocating getting rid of Mass or replacing it with the Divine Office because there are mistakes from time to time.

Sorrry, in I think in this case you are wrong. The ritual we use instructs the EMHC to take Communion before he/she gives it to the rest of the congregation. I don’t think same rules apply here as at Mass.

Sorrry, in this case you are wrong. The EMHC who gives Communion at a Communion service always takes it first. That’s how those services are written. At Mass, one doesn’t, but this is not Mass and the same rules do not apply.
That’s interesting. All of the communion services I have been to have been led by one of our Deacons so it has never been an issue.

Peace,

We have no deacons around here so there is no choice. I’m one of 4 trained to lead the Sunday Liturgy of the Word with Communion in my parish. The person who leads it is not the person who does the Communion Rite unless there is no other EMHC present – in fact, I’m not an EMHC so I can only lead the Liturgy of the Word part.
