The idea was that you would hang them over your bed and any nightmares would be “caught” in the dream catcher before they got to your brain. I have no idea if it’s rooted in Native American religion or it’s just an odd cultural bit of folklore/kitsch.

They are, but they’re more of a protective talisman than a ‘dream protector’ so to speak, at least in traditional Native american culture… more here

It was cool to see how embracing the Faith did not mean abandoning their cultural heritage.
That’s one of the most fascinating points of the Catholic Faith. We don’t have to destroy the rich cultural heritage of converts from different backgrounds as the Church can cristianize them!
I’m very sad to see fundamentalist/pentecostals/prosperity gospel preachers working hard to destroy the culture of my country (Brazil) and replace it their Mega Church/Sionist/Dispensationalist garbage.

What if you get a priest to bless it?
Having your priest bless your belongings seems to me a good idea in general. Blessing something that the original makers might have thought to have magical or supernatural meaning sounds like a very reasonably precaution.
You might also consider whether other people seeing the object might jump to conclusions about your own beliefs; though in the case of a dreamcatcher the chance might be quite small.
