What happens if both are Muslim when they get married and then the husband converts to either Christianity or Judaism? Is the wife obligated under Islamic law to get a divorce or how is that handled? What if he converts to something other than Judaism or Christianity?

[7.180] And Allah’s are the best names, therefore call on Him thereby, and leave alone those who violate the sanctity of His names; they shall be recompensed for what they did.
This would imply that Muslims cannot associate with non-Muslims. Hence, Muslms would not be allowed to marry non-Muslims.

In Islam, “Muslim” means anyone who submits to God, not just the followers of Mohammed. However, neither Christians or Jews are considered Muslim:
[3.67] Ibrahim was not a Jew nor a Christian but he was (an) upright (man), a Muslim, and he was not one of the polytheists.

Well it looks like the position is arguable if we look at things from a strictly Quranic stand point. But the additional teachings and understandings of Muslim scholarship seem to agree that women do not have this freedom.

Of course, since we’re often told by our Muslim posters that no Muslim writings outside of the Quran has any value. I guess the Muslim woman can feel free to ignore the scholarship and marry a Christian or Jewish man if she likes.

Unless our hypothetical Muslim woman lives in a Muslim country, in which case their equivalent of City Hall may not grant the couple a marriage license. Not sure of this, but I think it’s possible.

There was a case a few years ago of an Islamic scholar from Egypt who denied the existence of jinns and in retaliation was subjected to an attempt by fundamentalist judges to render his marriage null and void, since apparently a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim in Egypt. (They were trying to show that by, in their view, denouncing Islam, he had ceased to be Muslim and so could not be married to his wife.) The couple was ultimately forced to flee the country.

Since these teachings are not based in the quran or sunnah, muslims are following not what God has revealed but what their “scholars” have taught them.

True, I have asked muslims this question frequently; I have never received a satisfactory answer.

I’m not sure I understand the nature of your objection. If you don’t want professional theologians to interpret the Qu’ran who do you think should do the job?

To my knowledge , husband will be given few days to offer repentance & return to Islam . If he does not do that then marriage will be broken by a judge.

You cannot have an interpretation of something that is simply not present in the quran.

There is absolutely nothing in the quran about a muslim woman marrying a non-muslim man.

Which means that it is not haraam.

If it is not expressly forbidden, then no scholar can forbid this kind of union from an islamic perspective.

However most scholars will offer an unislamic opinion that the marriage is haraam.

.
Does your wife really believe that she did not commit any sin by marrying you ? She read Quran & the life of the Prophet & found that God & His Prophet allowed & encouraged Muslim women to marry non-Muslims ?

There is no verse in Quran that says u can’t slap or kick your mom . Does it mean it is allowed for us to do so ? We must read all the verses regarding parents , then we will easily understand that we are not even allowed to utter uh to them . So , no question of beating mom or dad.

Okay, I understand. You’re saying that because it is a matter not addressed in Islamic scripture these theologians have no justification to rule mixed marriages haram. Sounds reasonable to me.

Yes

Not encouraged, but they did not forbid it either.

There are plenty of ahadith that talk about respecting all your elders. There are plenty of ahadith that talk about respecting your parents.

There is a sahi ahadith that says that if you cannot complete hajj (for financial reasons) perform the pilgrimmage around your mother, it has the same value.

By contrast there is nothing about believing women marrying men from the people of the book.

I just read Sam’s post. It seems this issue is addressed in the Qu’ran, at least partially.

To Algebra: I guess sometimes interpretations have to be made about what a scripture omits as well as what it states explicitly?

Not in islam, the quran is revealed by God, and perfect in its current form.

If the quran and sunnah have not omitted something, then it is permitted.

It must be explicitly forbidden for the matter to be considered haraam.

Else it falls into the gray area called makhroo, or something that is not expressly forbidden but is undesirable.

yes thats true, because when children are born the children usually follow the fathers tradition and religion

BUT,many muslims and scholars say that there are no “people of book”, not anymore…so muslim men can NOT marry any jchristians anymore…because as we see it,their religion has developed, its not the same as during the Kuran,so today the christians are also mushirkun(Pagan)

Jews are still very monotheistic so it would be okey to marry a jew if it wasnt for the politics(israel and stuff)

and thats kinda my opinion
So, are you saying, that God changed his mind ever since he ‘so called’ gave you the quran? We, as Christian, were people of the book, and he has now changed his mind and we are pagans according to ‘many muslims and scholars’?
So, this is another proven fact that islam changes the rules of the quran, oh, so man can change Gods mind for him… thats good to know.
Im glad im in a religion that does not change Gods mind for him, as a matter of fact, none of God’s rules have been changed in Catholicism.
Again, this just recomfirms my beliefs in Gods true religion, the Catholic religion 🙂

That verse talks about unbelievers - idolaters.

Not Christians and Jews.
Tafsir: #221
**Do not marry mushrik women **unless they believe; a slave woman who believes is better than a free woman who does not believe, even though the latter may appear very attractive to you.

(Likewise) do not wed your women to mushrik men unless they believe; a slave man who believes is better than a free man who does not, even though he may be very pleasing to you.

These mushrik people invite you to the Fire while Allah by His grace invites you to the Garden and His pardon, and He makes His revelations plain to the people so that they should learn a lesson and follow the admonition.

mushrik, one who commits SHIRK, **used primarily to refer to idolaters of Mecca **

Nothing about Jews/Christians.

Does this have to be with the wife’s consent or petition - or will the courts just step in divorce them no matter what either of them says?

Very good question Jay!

Another question though for Algebra, - did you get married in an islamic justice system?

And if you did, did the “judge” who married you know that you are not muslim and your wife is?

Thanks!

If Catholicism would exist in those day it would be listed as a pagan religion…the Christians of those times were not idol worshipers as the Catholics today are

there are many good believers among protestants because they are closer to the true Christianity, but Catholicism is far away from it…its nothing about changing the rules, its just…Catholics are not part of the Christianity that the Koran speaks about
