Hey everyone. I am a never married 28 year old lady and my boyfriend is a 33 year old never married man. I was just wanting to know if it is sinful or not to date openly? And yes, my relationship with him is chaste.

To be honest, all of my relationships are chaste from this point on. šŸ™‚

Err, I am a little confused by your question. What do you mean by date ā€œopenlyā€? Do you mean is dating and letting people know you are dating someone a sin? Why would that be a sin? It is a sin to have sexual relations with someone before marriage, it is not a sin to date someone chastely.

As long as you are not doing anything which may be considered obscene or leading others to believe you are not chaste by actions which may be construed as such, you are fine.

Open relationships typically refer to non-exclusive relationships. So if some guy were interested in two different girls he might take each one out on a couple dates separately before deciding if he wanted to move into something more exclusive with one.

Well, if that is what is being referred to, it is still not a sin because it would just be considered ā€œfriendshipā€ All chaste relationships are actually friendships anyway. However, I would say that one should be careful with their affections and not lead one party on and should be open and honest about their intentions.

If your not married your free to date as many people as you like.

Thank you.
I should think not, as long as you are chaste.

Dating several men at the same time, or rather courting as it was called back then was actually once advised as it allows you to make a better and more rational choice when it comes to choosing a spouse.

Exclusivity is the privilege or marriage, not before.

I think at the beginning yes, but there does need to come a point where both parties either choose to see each other exclusively or not at all. This is discernment of marriage and if they don’t even want to date each other exclusively why not just be friends?

Problem: I am 17 years old, just graduated from high school., and in my first year at college. I don’t want to get married until I am at least 20, if then. I would like to go out with different boys now and then, but I don’t want to be tied down to steady company-keeping. This seems to be all but impossible today. If I am seen at a party with a certain young man, no one else will ask me for a date unless it becomes publicly known that I have broken up with that particular boy. In other words, if you go out once or twice with a certain boy, everybody else seems to think you are already bound to that person for good. Do I have to either give up dating boys entirely, or else stick to one during my whole college career?

Solution: We have heard complaints about this unfortunate social condition repeatedly. It is not a healthy thing at all. It is even responsible for some unhappy marriages because the young people involved had little chance to become acquainted with anybody but the first partner they happened to take out.

The responsibility for this situation may be traced to the fact that there is so much exclusive dating and regular company-keeping among the very young, even in the early years of high school. Some school authorities and even parents seem to think nothing of permitting freshmen and sophomore high school students to have their ā€œsteady dates.ā€ Since that is so common, it is natural that many young people should feel that by the time a person reaches college, he or she must have a ā€œsteadyā€, or must want to make a ā€œsteadyā€ of the first partner that comes along.

If you really are serious about not wanting to get married for several years, and about making the most of your chance at education, the best thing by all odds would be to do very little dating. If you go out often, even with different persons, you may find yourself in love before you know it, no matter what different plans you have laid. Giving up dates, which should not be too difficult for a 17 year old freshman, would obviate all your worries about people taking it for granted that you are all but engaged when you go out with a boy. If you do accept a few dates, you should courageously ā€œbuckā€ the tradition that you have to stick to one partner. Let each boy know that you are not starting anything by going out with him; that you shall remain free to accept dates from others; and that you are not going to let anyone ā€œrushā€ you.

Taken from Questions Young People Ask Before Marriage by Donald F. Miller, C.SS.R.

Basicly there is no exclusivity until someone asks to marry you and you accept, ie. exclusivity does not need to start until you are engaged.

Depends on what your boyfriend thinks. Since you already call him your boyfriend I think it would be inappropriate… or do you think it would be appropriate for him to date other girls while having you as his girl friend?

I live in Europe, and here boyfriend-girl friend is exclusive per se. If you wanna date other people, then you better break up in all honesty.

My last boyfriend was hurt if I even looked at other guys… thats how love is, its somewhat jealous and it demands protection and exclusivity.

Thats my oppinion. If I had a boyfriend he said to me: ā€œis it okay If I date other girls?ā€ the relationship would be finito, end of it.

Grace what you are talking about is a more serious commitment and one which could be argued best left for marriage. We are not supposed to date someone exclusively for a very long period of time without getting married. There is no actual time frame but after a year or two we are supposed to be seriously considering engagement and then marriage if the relationship is serious and exclusive.

What does ā€œopen datingā€ mean? Does it mean that you are dating several people? That is, one weekend you go to the movies with Ted and the next you may get coffee with Bob, etc. If so, no that is not sinful. If you are engaged to Bob and going to movies with Ted behind his back, that is a different situation.

Presumably you are getting to know these several men in chaste, friendly relationships and that eventually you and one of them will become more serious and get engaged. Then, after proper pre-cana formation you will be married in your parish church, in a modest yet attactive dress and go on to have a lovely family with several boys, one of whom will become a priest. 😃

If instead, you meet Bob, go out with him 3 times, become ā€˜exclusive’ and continue to date for 5 years without ever getting engaged or talking seriously about marriage, I think that’s a bad plan. Not sinful, just not very smart. 😦

I have no idea what the phrase ā€œopen dating relationshipā€ means in your generation.

I’d say that you are find to date openly, as long as everyone involved is comfortable with it, the dating is chaste, and marriage is still the end goal.

No. If you want to date openly, obviously you don’t have strong feelings for him. Let him go, make him a friend, and seek someone you are really attracted to so you can build towards a committed relationship. Dating is the stages to pass through to see if the relationship is truly committed. I guess you found out that yours is not.

I disagree with this. I have seen several books on dating, courtship, and marriage the last few years (looking for good books to give my older kids) and the advice seems very consisten. Dating, should be open, and probably rarely just two people going out alone. But when courtship starts, defined as two people have started discerning a married life with each other, the only thing they owe each other at that point is exclusivity. They should stop playing the field and focus on that discernment process. It can be terminated at anytime, but until then, that is what is owed.

I think that – for better or worse – in our present culture (at least here in the U.S.), the word ā€œdatingā€ is synonymous with ā€œexclusive datingā€. We might bemoan that fact, or pine for the good ol’ days of courtship, but the fact remains that, when most people speak of having a boyfriend/girlfriend and/or ā€œdatingā€, they are refering to exclusive relationships.

In short, if you say you are going to ā€œdate other peopleā€, chance are good that people are going to interpret that poorly.

Now, I don’t think that means that you can’t spend time with many different people of the opposite sex in a non-exclusive way. I know that, when I was in college, I would go out with different girls one-on-one to go get coffee or see a movie or play video games. All that was instrumental in the whole discernment process. But I definitely didn’t call it ā€œdatingā€.

Dating is the world’s alternative to courting, as its principles are human-centered and culturally determined. I think its not a sin if its a one-on-one relationship that goes beyond a close friendship.
