What does it mean that human nature is or is not good or evil?
It seems that human nature is good since human nature is reason and reason is prudence and prudence is a virtue. So humans are naturally good.
But it seems that human nature is not good since good is a habit that takes practice and nothing that takes practice is natural. So human nature is not good or bad.
However, reason takes practice so human nature would not be natural which is absurd.
So there must be some way in which reason and good is in one way natural and in another way unnatural.
Can you think of any because I can’t.
First of all, if you are majoring in philosophy your parents are going to be upset with you.
Second, Scripture has a lot to say about human nature.
Genesis 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Genesis 8:21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake;
for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
Numbers 15:39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:
Deuteronomy 15:9 Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Mark 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
Mark10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Romans3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
People aren’t naturally good. Let me ask you this,did your parents teach you to lie or teach you to tell the truth; did they teach you to be selfish or teach you to share, did they teach you to mess up you room or to keep it clean, did they teach you to be lazy or to be responsible? It is in our nature to be sinful, that is why we need grace.
