If not why not?
Does Latin count? If not why not?
‘‘Hisalone’’ wants to know if Catholics speak in tongues at every Mass like we see in Pentecostal Protestant (among other) services.I have no idea what the question in the thread topic is supposed to mean. Could you re-word it or explain it?
Because the Mass is a prayer in unity, it would be inappropriate to disrupt those praying in unity with one’s individual prayer in another tongue. If not why not?
Acts 2:4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.Because the Mass is a prayer in unity, it would be inappropriate to disrupt those praying in unity with one’s individual prayer in another tongue.
That was not during mass. Irrelevant to your question.Acts 2:4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
That took place at the home of Cornelius when Peter was preaching the gospel to them prior to their baptism. It was not during a mass. Irrelevant to your question.Acts10:46 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
What then of the “holy spirit churches” where all the people jump around and scream and babble and shake and crawl and writhe on the floor in complete chaos? It looks like demonic possession. Is that what you think St. Paul describes in 1Cor 14?one will speak in an unknown language, while another will interpret what is said. But everything that is done must be useful to all and build them up in the Lord. {27} No more than two or three should speak in an unknown language. They must speak one at a time, and someone must be ready to interpret what they are saying. {28} But if no one is present who can interpret, they must be silent in your church meeting and speak in tongues to God privately.{32} Remember that people who prophesy are in control of their spirit and can wait their turn. {33} For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the other churches….
Your impression of this stuff is so interesting. You cited these verses:
What then of the “holy spirit churches” where all the people jump around and scream and babble and shake and crawl and writhe on the floor in complete chaos? It looks like demonic possession. Is that what you think St. Paul describes in 1Cor 14?
So, to sum up:1Cor 14:26 Well, my brothers and sisters, let’s summarize what I am saying. (SNIP) one will speak in an unknown language, while another will interpret what is said. But everything that is done must be useful to all and build them up in the Lord. {27} No more than two or three should speak in an unknown language. They must speak one at a time, and someone must be ready to interpret what they are saying. {28} But if no one is present who can interpret, they must be silent in your church meeting and speak in tongues to God privately. {29} (SNIP) {40} But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.
You skipped a couple of verses. How interesting. Let’s see what you skipped.1Cor 14:26 Well, my brothers and sisters, let’s summarize what I am saying. When you meet, one will sing, another will teach, another will tell some special revelation God has given, one will speak in an unknown language, while another will interpret what is said. {29} Let two or three prophesy, and let the others evaluate what is said. {30} But if someone is prophesying and another person receives a revelation from the Lord, the one who is speaking must stop. {31} In this way, all who prophesy will have a turn to speak, one after the other, so that everyone will learn and be encouraged. {32} Remember that people who prophesy are in control of their spirit and can wait their turn. {33} For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the other churches….{39} So, dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking in tongues. {40} But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.
So now can you tell me how the following displays of anarchy have anything to do with the above passage?1Cor 14:26 Well, my brothers and sisters, let’s summarize what I am saying. When you meet, one will sing, another will teach, another will tell some special revelation God has given, one will speak in an unknown language, while another will interpret what is said.
Why don’t you do it anyway?I don’t believe half the people who actually are gifted to speak in tongues. Sorry, but I can’t believe this. If I ever had the gift of speaking in tongues, I’d run to a seminary and give up my life for God.
True. What we see in these tongue-speaking services is called hysterical catharsis. Period. Entertaining, but not biblical. So, to sum up:
I’ve yet to see anything like that when dealing with speaking in tongues. Ever.
- For each person speaking in tongues, there must be someone to translate what is said- someone apart from the speaker.
- No more than 2-3 should speak in tongues during the Mass or the prayer service or whatever.
- They must take turns speaking.
- If no one can interpret, there is to be no speaking in tongues. You have to be quiet and speak to God in tongues when it’s just the two of you.
- What is said and translated must be useful to ALL (all present? all the baptized faithful?).
- Order and protocol are to be followed, EVEN IF ALL THE ABOVE CONDITIONS ARE MET.
