Hisalone,

Perhaps you should have bolded and made red THIS part of the passage:

But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.
In the Catholic Charismatic Masses I’ve been to, there is praying in tongues, but it’s generally done very low key during times appropriate for private meditation during the mass. The PRAYER MEETINGS, are run pretty much in accord with the passage you quote.

Because I am married with two boys.
Good reason!

But if you started speaking in tongues you said you would go to a seminary. Were you going to convert and go to a pentacostal seminary?

By the way, I am glad you do not babble. Maybe the reason Catholics don’t speak in tongues at their Masses, most of them thank God, is “tongues shall pass away”.

If not why not?
Dear OP.
Quite a lot of the traditional churches are a bit frightened by this gift. Its too bad…
Some Catholic churches have a charismatic spirituality in their midst… often this has very much to do with the priest… does he show in his style that he condones it or not.
Speaking in tongues… both for personal edification and for missionary activity is Biblical… so too is speaking in a language that you don’t understand.
In my church people don’t speak loudly in tongues and whereas that is okay, I find it a bit sad that my parish priests does not urge us to ask for the charismatic gifts or have an expectation about it in their own life very much…
That being said, I know there are people in my parish that do speak in tongues in their private prayerlife … and as for me, while I dont I wish I did but I must have patience a while yet while hoping God gives me this great gift… for none of the gifts of the Holy Spirit are small even though some are greater than others.

As a famous man once said when people implied that they did not want this gift and said: “remember Paul said it was the least of the gifts”… “Yes… its the least… so its natural that we start with that”.

Many Catholics that I have spoken to have an expectation of revival… a great new out-pouring of the Holy Spirit over the whole Church… 🙂 Maranatha, I say 🙂

I always love to be in gatherings, catholic or otherwise, where priests, pastors, nuns, monks, laymen and women speak in tongues … this is often followed by gifts of healing and prophesy that really have visible life-altering potential.

Halleluja for these great gifts.👍

I am a Roman Catholic and will remain so.

Pentecost as well as the gifts of the Holy Spirit belongs to HIM… the Holy Spirit… It does not belong to one denomination but the Giver gives to whom and where He pleases.

In my eyes the Catholic Church should be the most “pentecostal” church of all by nature… if it is not so today its because the Church is sick… the whole Church is sick… not only the Catholic part but also the Pentecostal one who have the gifts and a lot of great things but have forgotten the Body and Blood…
You get my point.

As for you grandfather… you serve just as well in the world with the charismatic gifts as you do in the seminary. The gifts are for all and we are all called to evangelise and have the signs of confirmation follow us in the Power of God. So ask the Lord to give you whatever gifts HE wants to give you…

We all need one another desperately in Christ’s Body… but it probably takes a catastrophe for some to admit it.

I believe that God gives the gift of tongues and I know of a handful of people personally who believe they have this gift.

What the gift of tongues is: A gift to be used to His glory

What the gift of tongues is not: Something that everyone has and to be used in a public display every time they worship

To everything there is a time and purpose. If everyone in a congregation claims to have the gift of tongues, they are lying and giving the glory to themselves instead of God.

The people that I know who have this gift do not even speak of it, as they are the stewards of this God-given gift and take this responsibility seriously. When in prayer groups, they often use the gift of tongues but do so without the showmanship so often visible in protestant circles.

Surely … tongues shall pass away… but the humility and love that makes us ask for and receive these gifts will last forever.

Yes, exactly.

Doy! Please excuse me, and everyone else on this thread, OP. We’ve all completely missed a very important thing-

If you’d like to see what does or doesn’t go on at a Mass, we’d love to have you assist at one. Please, however, be respectful of the Church’s teachings, vis a vis not receiving Communion.

If you’d like an explanation of what to expect at Mass, and/or what you can do to participate, any one of us would be more than happy to help out, right, y’all?
😃

My priest is a charismatic. He has begun a charismatic prayer meeting for the parish. He has also begun having a regular TLM. But he has rebuked individuals publically when they have interupted the Mass (NO and TLM) with their charismatic gifts. The subject of this thread specifies tongues at Mass. So the question is not is the gift of tongues good or bad, only should it be manifested a Mass. To which the response must be a resounding no!

I am Roman Catholic been going to the Church for 47 years and ive never seen it in my church.

Actually the OP also asked us for reasons why not… so thats why I did not just write yes or no… besides… the topic interests me… and I don’t force anyone to read my posts. 🤷

Okay… so to answer the first question. My answer would be the opposite from yours. My answer is a resounding YES ! 🙂
If the speaking in tongues come from the Lord then it sure does belong in the Mass, as Scripture also tells us and it can well serve the congregation very much as well as the individual. Neither will it cause disharmony… indeed I have never been in a penetcostal church where it did either. Today the Church seems to have forgotten the passages in Scripture that tells us that these gifts should all be evident in the assembly when the congregation comes together… I will remind you of it… 1: Cor 14: 1- 19. … indeed the whole of 1. Corinthians is a great source of knowlege about the first Christians church-life… it teaches us about the right balance… but it surely does not teach us to throw the charismatic gifts out of our gatherings.

👍

I have never heard anyone speak in tongues at Mass or anywhere. We do have a lady that speaks in tongues at my parish. She is very subdued about it and doesn’t seek to be noticed. I have attended daily Mass and many other prayer meetings with her and she has never mentioned it or had this happen when I have been around. Her freinds have mentioned it happens to her at some of their prayer meetings. No one makes a big deal about it.

Where in the Mass should it go? WHen the lector is reading or the Priest reading the Gospel, should somebody interrupt with speaking in tongues? When the Prayers of the faithful are being offered? DUring the Eucharistic prayer or the COnsecration?

If the assembly wants to speak in tongues let them gather before or stay after Mass and do so, but it is inappropriate during the Mass itself.

Did you read the Scripture passage that I mentioned? The thirst for the Charismatic gifts come from reading the Word and asking; where are all these things that I dont see in my congregation?
When I visit pentecostal or messianic churches they have an ordered “liturgy” as well, believe it or not… when someone preaches they dont interrupt with a sudden prophesy or speaking in tongues… when they sing someone does not suddenly start making the table or preaching… It seems like some people are afraid that allowing for some more ministries in the Church gatherings would automatically bring complete chaos. I repeat, that is not what I have said, nor what I have seen in the places where tongues are used.
There is one Evangelical church in my area where I particularly like to come as a part of my church life… yes, I am a double dipper, as they call us. There they have healing ministry as well as room for speaking in tongues/ free prayer and prophesy during their service… and I have experienced this as truly Biblical and very powerful why its also a quite successful church … believe it or not but when Jesus said: “I send you out and **these signs **shall follow you and confirm that your words about me are true” He meant it because we need it.
I’ll any time say that the Pentecostals need something we have but also that they have something we need.

I don’t know…thinking that there is something “missing” from the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass seems to me that perhaps you’re not fully grasping what goes on in there. It is the perfect and complete continuation of Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross. How could any other religion/Protestant denomination have something to add to that?

Excuse me but you are speaking nonsense…
There are a whole bunch of elements that should be existing in a Christian’s life along side the Mass… you know that. To give you a few examples: confession, fellowship, love, humility, zeal, joy, the Bible, preaching etc.
And for correction I will say: there is not a continuation of the Sacrifice of Christ… there is a re-actualisation of a one-time event.

Look at the Life of Christ as a reference. His Church is called to do what He and His apostles did. He said it quite clearly: These signs will follow those that believe in Me: they shall, besides love and evangelisation, cast our demons, speak in new tongues, heal the sick, help the needy, prophesy etc… and for instance: Paul says that prophesy should be a most wanted gift because its a great sign for the unbelievers who come into our assemblies ( 1. Cor 14) He even hopes that EVERYONE in the congregation will do that. But for some reason we rarely hear a prophetic word in our congregations… … And I think its due to this pridefull talk saying: “We have the Eucharist and so we dont need anything else…”. But this is arrogance and you should know better… not only that, its not the fullness of life in Christ… The Pentecost had not yet happend at the last Supper or at the Crusifixion… We need EVERYTHING that Christ wants to give us through the Holy Spirit… let us not say no out of ignorance of Scripture or because we wrongly associate the charisma with certain other groups of whom we are suspicious.

GraceDK,
How do you propose to change the liturgy to allow for the speaking of tongues?
