The teaching of the Fathers that sex was only for procreation is about the purpose of the genital organs. They are for procreation. The unitive aspect of sex is more about the subjective meaning of sex, an ADDED purpose so to speak. I remember reading the Catechism of Trent on marriage and that it said that the purpose given to the procreative powers of Adam and Eve were solely for procreation. People who ignore their vocation to have children, THOSE are the ones definitely under condemnation by the Fathers. However, if a couple are infertile, it doesn’t mean they can’t still have sex because they didn’t sterilize themselves into permanent infertilityLet’s assume you are right. They knew about the sperm, ovum and how they relate to periods.
If you read this: catholic.com/tracts/contraception-and-sterilization
Do you think they asked married couples to have sex only when they wanted to procreate?
2-3 times in their life?
How do you reconcile the HV, the unitive aspect, with this teaching?
The only logical conclusion is that they believed that every single act is needed for procreation hence they did not know about sperm, ovum and their relationship to periods.
Edit:
No space for the unitive sex.
