Are there any Catholic theologions that fully understand the last book of the bible ?

Yes indeed, but not in the sense that a lot of modern biblical scholars think about it. For instance, by using numerical trickery you can get a lot of people’s names to add up to 666; does that mean John was predicting the appearance of Hitler 2000 years ago? Not too likely, but numbers do have meaning for John. They’re symbols of other things, and other realities, like parts of the body and colors in Rev. So when John mentions “horns” he means “strength, might.” When he says a horse is red, that’s because the rider is a symbol of war. John does this because Rev is apocalyptic literature, a type that’s heavy into symbolism and trial under persectuion.

So, to the numbers. Seven in the OT appears a lot, starting at the very beginning (7 days to create the heavens & earth). And in the beginning we have the 1st covenant w/ God (“Ok, Adam, all you’ve gotta do is tend the garden and not eat from this one tree, and we’ll be good.”) In time in the OT, the number itself came to be associated w/ covenants; God promises sevenfold retribution on Israel if they break the covenant (in Dt, sorry don’t have chap & verse). 7 came to be seen as the # of perfection, completeness. Jesus continues this in the NT by saying we have to forgive our enemies seven times seven (or seventy-seven times, depending on the trans.), meaning we have to perfectly, completely forgive. And John in Rev has: 7 churches, 7 angels, 7 scrolls, 7 trumpets, 7 bowls, 7 beatitudes. All are symbols of covenant language, God’s protection for his chosen people in distress. So what would 666 denote? Somebody stalled short of perfection, one who repeatedly denies the covenant, in short someone evil. Now does John have someone specific in mind, or is he using this as a symbol? Probably both, and Catholic theologians have had thoughts on this back to the Church Fathers (many see the 1st beast as Nero, others as symbolically representing pagan Rome).

There’s a lot more to be said, but I’m probably hitting the limit. Why don’t you pick up a copy of the Navarre Bible–Revelation. It should really help you interpret the book in line with Church teaching–it’s a great study. 👍

No prob. 🙂 Let me tell you, Rev is full of amazing nuggets just like that. I’m taking an awesome graduate course in the book of Rev, and we’re really pulling it apart and analyzing the different ways of interpreting it. The Navarre Bible is great, and I’d never heard of it before this class. Basically you can get different books of the NT, and the notes in the Bible are absolutely great. The notes come from Church Fathers, Encyclicals and Papal letters, writings from the Saints, the CCC; in short, good solid stuff. You can get this and other scripture commentaries online, but be careful with some of the stuff. Rev is one of the most misinterpreted book of Scripture. That doesn’t mean that there’s one and only one interpretation, but it does mean that some interpretations out there are wayyyyy off. Good luck!

Just reading, and I seeing you guys , seeing what you guys are going through,remineds me what I went throught, in my head, trying diffrent things, over and, over and, over again.
I ‘m in the bush here, and I didn’t have a computer to read, all the idea’s out there.Well Every body here thought I was nuts haveing a obsession over a number.It came to my head, to just count the books in the bible.The only bible I could find was a K.J.V.so that is what I used,And I had to get that off of some one else,Well when came to no.27 it came out to Daniel.in the old test.
So I read it over and over,Then the whole bible at least three times,when I came to Revelation It struck me, in the middle of the night, that he was telling me a story seven times to,JUST like DANIEL and his LITTLE SCROLL ,So being catholic,I thought I would study it Helen Kellar style.I would see If any of the other people ,I mean riligions, had the same interp.I didn’ want to study the catholic prospective,I didn’t want it to influence me in any way.Well they didn’t make sense now,now I don’t consider that I’m a Albert Einstein ,but it just didn’t make sense.
I Studied with the seventh day, the baptists.The mormons ,the ,well all the religions , need less to say I got helped out of some church,s, one minister even got fired ,lot of them changed the study topic.Some kissed me, and when the leader heard what I was saying,they got me out fast, and got out right mad, nobody made sense.
One book ,all diffrent.They had seven raptures I had one.I made a real pest of my self ,now in Wnnnipeg there are alot of churchs and I was to them all,drawing a blank every time.So I thought I would write a book of my oun.By the way 27 is the trinity cubed.The number of ENLIGHTENMENT., there I did not want to blow it so fast, but, that’s what I found it to be. 3x3x3=27 the trinity cubed.

I kind of like Scott Hahn’s interpretation of some of the book of revelation as the celebration of the Mass in heavon as well as here on earth. See his book “The Lamb’s Supper” for more details.

Well , while I was blabbing my guts out, I bet you could not guess what just happened to me, I have a 2 year old car in perfect shape, in the drive way, and it just cought fire, the inside is gone ,so I guess I have to walk in to town and get another one. some one, I geuss is just not on my side .see you later.walt@#

I would look into the Catholic Scripture Study on the Book of Revalation. Scott Hahn is one of the contributors. I like this series because it includes the CCC along with all of the usual historical and linguistic material. It’s a 20 week study so you should have a good idea of Catholic teaching about that book by the time you are done. 😉

I have the course materials and The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn.

I started the course in the middle and decided to continue with it at a time I’m better able to understand it. Several of the women in the class had been through several Revelation courses before and were discovering many new things in this course.

Scott Hahn probably has the best handle on Revelations at this time.

Also, numbers have very significant meaning throughout the Bible, not just in Revelations.

Warning: ** If you take a study course on Revelations, be sure that there is a priest or someone with a strong theology background to explain and answer questions. The Catholic Scripture Study** course only provided a VHS tape for the class to view for answers. The course leader didn’t know any more than the rest of us.
