Btw, the point made by some others, that any priest qualifies to fulfill the role of prophet, is inadequate and therefore misleading. A priest is gifted in certain ways, yes, but to claim that any and all of them are pretty much the equals of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus himself, is silly. They certainly are not, and that’s born out both in practice as well as by the Church’s organization. With regard to practice, plenty of priests unfortunately say theologically indefensible things from the ambo, in the confessional, or during informal talks. And with regard to the Church’s organization, a priest is not a member of the magisterium and therefore does not have the right to disseminate his own theological views – which is pretty much precisely what a prophet does. So no, one cannot substitute any old parish priest for a prophet.
