I actually like Toolan’s “I Am the Bread of Life” and Haugen’s “We Remember”.

Toolan’s song can be taken directly from scripture:
Unfortunately, when OCP bought out Glory & Praise, they “sanitized” Toolan’s hymn of any masculine references, as is the custom of OCP, by changing the words from third person into second person. “He who comes to me…” became “You who come to me…,” therefore, it ceased to be a direct quote from the Gospel of John and became a rather inaccurate paraphrase.

Regarding “We Remember,” since when do we “bring the bread and wine to share a meal?” Why should we permit a member of the United Church of Christ (Haugen), which does not believe in the Real Presence of the Eucharist, to write music for Catholic worship with such poor theology?

The only way such music will disappear from our parishes is to toss out the hymnals that contain it and purchase truly Catholic hymnals.

I like some of them as music to listen to outside of Church. They are not appropriate liturgical music of course.

What scripture is “Sons of God” from?
sons of God, hear His holy Word
gather round, the table of the Lord.
Eat His Body, drink His Blood
and we’ll sing the song of love
hallelu, hallelu, hallelu, hallelu u-ia.

brothers, sisters, we are one,
and our song has just begun
in the Spirit, we are one,
and we’ll live for-evvvv-errrr.

I love being Catholic. I hate the songs they “play”. I feel like I’m at a campfire. some songs are beautiful, but don’t belong in a church. Some hymns are beautiful, and should be sung. There are tens of thousands of beautiful hymns written for the Catholic church. Why do I hear the same SONGS every week? I am just sad about this. I miss having a church orchestra and choir. Now we have an electric organ and a wedding singer, who gets applause after each Mass. I genuflect; most bow or wave their heads. I fold my hands; most put their hands in their pockets or around their spouse’s waist. I don’t even bring my cell phone into church; most turn off the ringer, some don’t bother. Are we that self-centered? Don’t we want to even TRY to be better, to do something HARDER, to listen to something LONGER not about US?
Yeah, my Church could use another choir master. His picks are unbelievable. Not only are they unknown to me, they are dissonant or flat – no feeling. We have a choir, but we have a guitar too (does not sound right). Where did the beautiful hymns go? We have an electric organ; I’m okay with that. But the musical choices are awful. And then we end up with gospel and clapping. I do not clap.

The Vatican II Hymnal, the St. Michael Hymnal, the Adoremus Hymnal, to name a few.

Even the new kid on the block, the St. Augustine Hymnal, a lower-cost alternative to OCP with many of the same theological and musical problems, states as a selling point that they avoid inclusive language and try to include the original lyrics when possible.
