WHY stop there? Google can be your friend. If you would take a close look, you will find that JPII deeply criticized socialism for its cog in the wheel reduction of persons to just that: Cogs in a Wheel. He ALSO was just as, if not more so, critical of free market extremists that have no regard for fellow man because greed and profit is the end game. He did indeed find government necessary and beautifully defined the “role of the state”…….The quote above is incomplete. And, he certainly was no libertarian.JPII wrote
By intervening directly and depriving society of its responsibility, the Social Assistance State leads to a loss of human energies and an inordinate increase of public agencies, which are dominated more by bureaucratic ways of thinking than by concern for serving their clients, and which are accompanied by an enormous increase in spending. In fact, it would appear that needs are best understood and satisfied by people who are closest to them and who act as neighbors to those in need. It should be added that certain kinds of demands often call for a response deeper
JPII issued an entire encyclical on this topic:JPII deeply criticized socialism for its cog in the wheel reduction of persons to just that: Cogs in a Wheel.
No, if the encyclical is read in it’s entirety, one could see he was against unregulated capitalism for the reasons one see’s when left unchecked. The capitalism he addresses is directly related to the free market, not the state.(As I read his writings I see more that he was against “State Capitalism” that true capitalism.)
Which proves persons most likely do not read the beauty of the Church’s teachings, ah sigh…What he is against is unfettered capitalism that when left to it’s own demise can and often does exploit workers who make possible this “free” trade you espouse…sigh,I am for a true free market capitalism. If that goes against JPII until it is made Ex cathra I am good
Someone can believe in the economic policies of Bernie Sanders and say the same thing.Everything I believe is 100% in accordance with the catholic faith. I have read dozens upon dozens of books that prove I can have my positions and not violate my faith.
Indeed, the Church does not definitely say how much government is appropriate or inappropriate. The government confiscating the means of production would clearly be wrong, but beyond that the Church is silent.Yes they can.
Of course, it all hinges on the definition of socialism. Bernie’s economic policies are big government policies to be sure, but they are not really socialism. Unless of course, you are going to define medicare as socialism.Except that the Church has issued many blanket condemnations of Socialism (not just “unfettered Socialism”). Pope John XXIII wrote that one could not be a good Catholic and embrace even “mild Socialism”.
That’s parsing words looking for a loophole.Of course, it all hinges on the definition of socialism.
