One of the Popes had a labryinth laid down in Castel Sant’Angelo, so there is still at least that one at the Vatican; it is on some of the Rome tours. The most famous and well-preserved, though, is at Chartres Cathedral in France. Apparently, the patterns were originally invented as just as interesting decoration by the Romans, but Christians eventually took up the practice of using them as a sort of a pilgramage. The practice fell out of popularity in the 17th and 18th century, but it wasn’t because of opposition by the Church. It was just a popular piety, and so it had its time and then was replaced by other things.
