Anne Perry, Patricia Cornwell, and Elizabeth George are several others I’ve enjoyed. :dancing:
Love PD James and Elizabeth George as well. George’s latest just came out and thankfully she’s back to Havers, Lynley and St John. Her previous book was awful IMO, not up to her standard. For American mysteries I particularly like Tony Hillerman.

No book burning allowed…what if I want to burn all the copies of “The Da Vinci Code”?!?

my Mother my Confidence,
Corinne
Reminds me of a scene in a movie that I saw recently called The Day After Tomorrow. The teens are in the library and they are FREEZING. They find some books to burn. One of the books was by Nietzse, I believe. One of the librarians was going nuts over the kids wanting to burn this book to keep warm. The male teen character basically said “HE’S DEAD.”

Don’t ask me why what you said reminded me of that scene. Probably struck me because I’m soooooo tired.

About a  million years ago, I saw Truman Capote on the old Johnny Carson show. Johnny asked him, “I know you’re a writer, but do you like to read books?” Capote said, “I read everything–even books that go in one eye & out the other”.
Sounded like a plan…trying to:D live it!!

Did anyone ever see that Twilight Zone episode, I think Rod Steiger, starred in it, in which the end of the world had come, a nuclear holocaust I believe, and this librarian was the only one left in the world to read all the books that he wanted, but just as he got ready to read, he dropped and broke his glasses. I was a child watching that episode, but it definitely made an impression on me. I felt terrible for him because now that his glasses were broke, and he couldn’t read,he was truly alone in the world. So I guess the point is for all of us bookworms is to have an extra pair of glasses. 👍

I am happy to see that so many of you gained your love of books from the library. I am a retired children’s librarian and often looked myself as nurturing a little nest of bookworms. I think the greatest children’s books were the Narnia Books, The Little House Books and The Great Brain Series (really great Catholic Series )
I’ve read Little House and Chronicles of Narnia with my kids—haven’t heard of The Great Brain Series—thank you!!! I’m always looking for good children’s literature. Any more suggestions?

Yes, I saw this one. As I recall, the character had an extreme flaw to the point of preferring books to people? He was really nasty to his wife? I think the point was he got what he wanted; what he wanted wasn’t going to be so pleasant, especially without his glasses.

Don’t bookstores smell great 👍
I don’t know about now. Maybe, it means I’m in the large ones to much; need to look for the smaller, local ones. Hard to find around here, though.

There had been one, a quaint and a treasure. It was small with only one asile. Two persons needed to pass each other sideways in order to get by. It was before so much publishing took to cloth or paper bound. Some of the volumes were leather-bound with nearly all the rest hard-bound. If they didn’t have it (which was a far amount of time, due to the limited space); they would get it for you, and fast.
It surely had a bookstore aroma. When it closed, it was sad. The owners had become friends. Oh, yes, there were the books, too!

books + coffee smell 😃 👍

Sometimes its fun to browse the older books …I ,do when I’m in Goodwill or the St Vin dePaul store…found a couple good ones recently.

I enjoy reading, I just don’t have enough time to do it right now. Once school is over and I don’t have to deal with hw every night, I think I’ll be able to read at my leisure. And come to think of it, I have 6 new books sitting on my shelf waiting to be devoured.

Yes, I do the :coffee:&Bestsmileys.com Borders or B&N. When I get nostalgic, I go to a used bookstore and just hang aroundhttp://bestsmileys.com/happy/7.gif.

Actually, Burgess Meredith played the book loving gentleman. Remember him as the Penguin in the old Batman TV series in the 60’s? Also he was once married to Paulette Goddard.
I am a bottomless pit of useless trivia. 😃

Yes, yes, that’s right! Now, what about the story line? Do you remember more than what we’ve pieced together? 😛

**I can’t stand fiction. 😛 My mother is always trying to get me to read fiction. I will read some non-fiction if it involves something I am interested in. Otherwise I feel it is a waste of my time. **

I used to get in trouble at school for reading.

I now work in a bookstore, which is very similar to a chocoholic working in a chocolate factory. I usually read about four or five books a week, sometimes more. I love books. I love the way they smell, I love the way the paper feels. My husband is a converted book addict now, too. I don’t know how many books we own but it’s not enough.

I just read Cat In An Orange Twist (crummy mystery), Nickeled and Dimed: On Not Getting By In America, The Intimate Life of L.M. Montgomery (very depressing to find out how unhappy she was), Emily’s Quest, A Walk In The Woods, The Gift of Asher Lev… I might be missing some.

Reading is breathing. How can anyone not read?

I got in trouble senior year of high school for reading. My grades plummeted; I even read during class when I was bored. That was fun (except for the grades)!!

Thank you for that. Yes you’re right Burgess Meredith. I can see him now sitting outside in the streets in a heap, despondent because his glasses were broken. Oh yes, I remember the Penguin too. Watching Batman back then was a treat for my siblings and me back then. Who didn’t watch the Caped Crusaders in those halcyon days of long ago? I miss those days…anyway, to this day I still stay, “same Bat-time, same Bat-station :)” when telling someone I’ll see them again soon.
