Are You a Convert or a Revert?

I’m a Re-con-vert LOL

there needs to be another option.

I was baptized in the CC, but was never raised in the church and never had been to mass…so I didn’t REvert because I never knew catholicism in the first place…

It was more of a conversion, say from paganism, because I had to come to the understanding of the teachings and then, yes, I was sold… ((bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus Christ HOORAH))

OR - you could say that my baptismal graces REALLY worked!! :D:D:D

Convert from an Evangelical/Baptist background.

After seeing many problems in the Baptist denominations, I tried other churches, including Reformed Presbyterian and Lutheran. Although there were things that I liked about each denomination, there were also things that I disagreed with. For a while, I started to become somewhat disillusioned with Christianity because it seemed that Protestants disagreed on everything, even the important doctrines, such as how to be saved and the significance of baptims and the Lord’s Supper.

During that time, although I looked into many denominations, the Catholic Church was the one church that I stayed away from, because all my life I had been conditioned to think that it was apostate and probably not even Christian. Then a Catholic friend gave me a book which pointed out all the logical fallacies of Sola Scriptura. That book got me thinking seriously about the Catholic Church for the first time in my life. So I started reading Church history, Catholic apologetics, and everything else Catholic that I could get my hands on. (I also watched or read Catholic/Protestant debates so as to get both sides of the argument.) Long story short: Two years after my friend gave me that book, I was received into the Catholic Church. After all the wandering, it is definitely good to be home!

I would LOVE to know what book that was I know just who I’d give it to.

I’d categorize myself as a Cradle Catholic who never really left…but was non-practicing for a while and now has come back home.

So I don’t know WHAT that makes me, exactly. I guess a “revert” of sorts.
I am a revert.

When I was a Protestant I noticed something. Many ex-Catholics returned to the Catholic church. But to this day I have never know a Protestant who returned to his origional church. Many of them do a lot of church hopping but never go back.
There is even an old joke amongst Protestants. My father-in-law even told it to me.

Guy is rescued from a deserted island by a passing boat. The rescuers see a structure on the beach and ask him what that is…
The guy replies… “Oh that’s the church I built and attend every Sunday!”
The rescue party notices another structure at the opposite end, “What’s that?” they ask.
“Oh, that’s the Church I USE to go to” the man replied

However there are exceptions to every rule… and while there is a lot of “church hopping” there are also those who DO very rarely, go back to their previous church. My in-laws were just such a group. After my brother-in-law divorced his wife and after some social awkwardness at their new church… my in-laws went back to the church they left.

But it is exceedingly rare. But either way, “church hopping” is very common and a problem for Pastors if too many people decide to leave.
When 1 or 2 influencial families leave your church… sometimes others will follow them to whatever church they move to… sometimes causing a cascade of people leaving which can shrink a church or even close it down.

It is a Protestant phenomenon that is alien to Catholics.

God bless you my brother, you’re story is inspiring and I hope it brings more people to the one true Church of Christ. I will pray for you and your safety, and that God will watch over you and keep you always in his grace.
Thank you bro for your prayers !!

God Bless You !!

Convert from nominal Anglicanism, but practical Atheism, to Catholicism, and now a Benedictine Oblate.

I clicked revert but I was more a “very poor Catholic” rather than leaving the church. At times I would not follow the requirements (miss Sunday mass whenever…, hadn’t been to confession in ages, immoral, etc.). Sheesh, as I type this I guess I was a fallen away Catholic. The guilt would always be there, though.

Convert via the church of Christ, by the way of Anglicanism…Now finally home 🙂

it’s too long though , if you have specific questions I can answer them
A very inspiring story! I was impressed that you see the Protestant churches as being close to Islamic ideas, and therefore attracted Muslim converts. That’s a unique perspective. I have saved your story as I have a very good friend that is a Muslim in Kuwait. Someday I may be able to share it with him. God Bless! 😃

yes , they are very simple , and share an extreme view about intersession of saints, if you recall , I said that I didn’t like shia islam for the same reasons that a protestant will have problem with Catholicism , so when a muslim become a christian , he will have immediately (1) a negative idea about the catholic faith (2)Plus a background that block him from seeing the beauty of those teachings , (3)than a widely protestant attacks on the church which will confirm his feelings , so he will never take his time to study it

I know one Moroccan muslim girl , she converted to Christianity , after a lay catholic man showed her the errors of islam , however , the biggest mistake he made when he invited her to a catholic mass , she didn’t understand what is going on , and didn’t feel a thing so a friend of her said to her’’ I was praying that you will not like it , come to our Pentecostal church ‘’, so she went and thought that the Catholic Church was wrong , when I meet her , I explain a lot of things to her about mary and the church from scripture(they told her the devil is appearing by form of the virgin Mary) , but I encourage her to continue growing in faith , because I know she must take her time , and I can’t push it on her , it’s like sending a muslim from grade 1(Islam) to university!(Catholic Church) without going to high school( the basic stuff and without being open to the truth)
