This! This is my gripe with Arroyo. His coverage of anything Pope Francis related is always negative, and often nothing more than thinly veiled hit pieces. Stay in your lane Ray. (or don’t, as I change the station anytime you come on)

I am a Protestant who likes listening to EWTN radio programming, everything from Dr Ray to Called to Communion, Al Kresta, and of course Catholic Answers Live. I even contribute to my local Catholic radio affiliate because I feel it’s only fair to do so since I listen so much to it and benefit from it.
Yes the radio side is more for helping protestants come Home to the One True Faith. The TV side focuses on a wide variety of issues one of which is defense of the Faith from attacks by liberals and secularism.

Whenever I’m at my desk at work I have ETWN, via You Tube, to listen to. Like you I am Protestant but much prefer Catholic media.

Can’t say I’m a fan for some of the reasons people expressed here. The big exception is The Journey Home. I’m fascinated by the stories of converts and have learned quite a bit. It is an intellectual program, unlike a lot on EWTN. For anyone interested, many are available on Youtube.

They weren’t instrumental in my return to the Church. However, that said, they have had a massive impact on the catechesis I have received. My RCIA program was average I would say, and EWTN filled it so much more.

One thing that was very helpful was the daily Mass. It helped me get the sense and the rhythm of it down so I didn’t feel too out of place when I would go

I did like the Father Mitch program where he’d teach the various encyclicals. I watched most of the episodes about Evangelium Vitae (the gospel of life). I’m not sure if that exists anymore.
You are referring to “Threshold of Hope”. Fr Pacwa now has another show in the same time slot, same wonderful educational flare. It’s called “Scripture and Tradition”

You can watch that and other EWTN programs on YOUTUBE.com/EWTN

Between Fr Mitch, Dr Anders, and the Catholic Answers Live team (Jimmy Akin, Tim Staples, and Father Wade, etc) I think they have it covered. 👍

I’m 99% positive its founder will eventually be canonized.
This question was asked not to recently on one of the programs. They do plan to proceed with opening her cause after she has been gone 5 years, which is normal.

They have begun gathering and compiling the necessary information in the meantime

Enlighten us please. What is different about Catholicism in your area?

I have watched a few of The World Over programs about the sexual abuse crisis. The guests give voice to what many Catholics are concerned about. I don’t think the program could be any more inflammatory than the news about the sexual misconduct crisis. I think they imagine or hope that a lot of bishops are watching.

Over the years I don’t think I’ve seen many bishops on EWTN (there have been some) – none who could be said to have taken a lead of the US Church.

Obviously EWTN has touched many people and introduced some amazing Catholic personalities to the world such as Fr. Mitch Pacwa.

My personal favorite show is “The Journey Home” for the same reasons as the poster above: it is so inspirational. I also love the host Marcus Grodi, he is so pastoral, gentle, encouraging, yet unobtrusive.

I also however, watch the show on You Tube. I don’t watch EWTN. They have had amazing results from such clearly modest resources. However, I also don’t think it’s appropriate that they take such a strongly right wing political line. I agree it makes it very much a channel that is giving an American (USA) right-wing flavour to the Church. Sometimes I look for a Catholic show on-line or on the Radio and instead get a right-wing rant, rather than attempting to be more expressive of the universal church. I hear that they were now owned by the Legionaires of Christ, as is Zenit and the Catholic Register. Is that still the case? I do not identify with any political party in the USA but do consider myself an orthodox believer. I would prefer a more measured and balanced look at politics from a Catholic standpoint, or none at all.

They are missing an opportunity to evangelize younger generations as I am 50 and I find their shows pretty low on production values and interest. They just have not moved into the 21st century.

I still am amazed at how God blesses Mother Angelica’s faith and strong sense of mission. They have produced some beautiful shows over the years.

I consider it poor succession planning to NOT have another nun ready to take Mother Angelica’s place, when her health failed. You mean there’s only ONE nun who can be so eloquent about the faith?
Yes, she’s been gone for a couple of years now. I wish they would do a new rosary show with a current nun. I think people would rather pray the rosary with somebody who is still living. I like the reruns of her earlier studio show, though.

I don’t watch TV, but I listened to EWTN radio for the first time today, tuning in during a program called ‘Women of Grace’ or something.

I liked it.

I really, really liked it. And I’m not even a woman.

But they mentioned spiritual warfare and the Church militant, and I was like ‘Hold on let me grab my scapular and Rosary beads and lets slay some dragons.’

75 messages so far and no mention of Fr. Spitzer’s Universe. He’s a very intelligent man, and I find the show enlightening, informative, and entertaining, although sometimes a little unsettling.

I fell asleep watching a couple of his videos in bed one night, that I had queued up. As I slept my mind must have continued listening, because I woke up an hour or so later after having the oddest dreams. I had a very hard time falling asleep again afterwards. I didn’t watch the show for a while after that.

The only thing I occasionally watch is The Journey Home, depending on the guest. I’m a convert and find some of the stories interesting. Sometimes Marcus Grodi’s interview style can be a bit assumptive, but overall he’s endearing. Otherwise, EWTN is not for me because I’m not the target audience. I’m younger and moderate on politics. The programs are geared towards an older, conservative crowd. I once heard someone say that Life on the Rock is really for grandparents to feel like they have a pulse of what is going on in the young Catholic world more than its for young people. All of this is okay. It doesn’t have to be for me. There are plenty of other things for me on social media that present a younger, less guarded view on the Catholic world and have better production values. I do wish EWTN was a bit less biased, but whatevs.

I mentioned Father Spitzer’s Universe. I record and watch his show every week. I agree with everything you said about him. His knowledge is so broad and like Mother Angelica and Bishop Sheen he has his own unique charisma that makes him compelling.

Whoever wrote that EWTN article is showing sour grapes and is plainly wrong.

In my opinion Mr. Arroyo is doing a good service in highlighting problems with our bishops and with the pope. He does not provide hit services. He also covers good stuff too. His job is to provide news in what’s going on, and his so-called negative stuff is important stuff. He is bringing to surface the confusion among bishops and faithful which at times, need to be spoken about. (Ave Maria Gratia Plena)
