Are you a liberal or a conservative?

I am conservative when it comes to Catholic issues. I am liberal in the sense that I believe we need to help folks who NEED it. BUT I am conservative in believing that we must first have the funds in order to help. We should never run a deficit unless in dire emergency such as war or threat of depression.

I’ve voted in every election, BUT I have not voted for the winning presidential candidate ever (so far). In a few cases, I’ve left the presidental (or senate or governor) ballot blank. In some years, I’ve taken the stance that whoever is in, I’m voting against them. This is probably one of those years. It’s probably been decades since I have actually voted for someone as opposed to voting against someone. For now, there is not one politician in either house or either party that I like. That’s pretty sad.

You must define the terms for us before we can really answer. After all a classical liberal is different from a modern day liberal. The same holds true for conservatives.

There’s less daylight between the two than most people think.

I identify as reactionary. I detest liberalism in all its forms, “modern” and “classical.” The former is a natural development of the latter, and the latter arises from gross errors in thought. I detest everything which is a product of liberalism: democracy, capitalism, socialism, “rights” thinking, etc. etc.

Depends on the issue. I’m pro-life, from conception until natural death, which means I’m opposed to abortion (conservative position) and opposed to capital punishment (liberal position). I’d like to see Obamacare repealed (conservative), but I also think taxes should be raised across the board (liberal). I vote Republican, though, because I feel their policies are less detrimental.

I have been accused of being a liberal here, but really I am so conservative that I am not comfortable with Aquinas. In fact, I am so conservative that I am not even completely comfortable with St. Paul.

I am faithful to the teaching authority of the Catholic Church. Plain and simple.

I am pro-life - from conception to natural death, and everything in between. I believe not only in the humanity of the zygote, but also the humanity of the zygote from rape or incest. Not only in the humanity of the baby, but also of the child, the adult, and the elder. A baby ought to have a loving mother and father, and I ought not decide who or how unless I AM the father. A child ought to have an education, and I ought not decide how or where unless I AM a parent. An adult ought to have a job, and I ought not decide where or what, unless I AM that adult. And an elder ought to have the right to security in his old age, and I ought not decide whom it comes from, unless I AM that elder.

The family or clan should be mostly autonomous in matters primarily concerning itself. The community should be autonomous in matters concerning the many families it has the right to rule, and not in the individual affairs of a family (unless these concern the entire village/city/town). The state should be autonomous in governing issues that concern the several communities it has jurisdiction over, and not individual towns’s affairs, nor the affairs of a family. And the federal government should only be able to govern issues which primarily concern the states - not individual states, nor individual cities, nor individual families.

I also believe that, somehow, religion should be brought back into the public square. No one should be ashamed to pray in public, or parade a relic, icon, or other sacred item around in the name of their God or gods. And I care not if these include pagans dancing and making blood sacrifices, nor if they include atheist “reason rallies” and the like - but public celebrations of religion should also be allowed, and no one should be ashamed of it. God bless one and all, and may he have the right to express his love for God as he sees fit, form his children’s consciences as he sees fit, without the interference or discouragement of city, state, or country.

I try to know the candidates and the issues and measure by the tenets of my Catholic Faith.

JFK ended his 1961 inaugural speech with this sentence:

With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.

Indeed, God’s work must truly be our own.

I have no idea how I could explain to God why I voted for pro-abortion candidates, for gay marriage, for legalized pot, for fiscal irresponsibility, or any issue or candidate that seems to want to go against God’s expectations of us.

Politically I consider myself conservative. I’m conservative economically, and mostly conservative on social issues (things like healthcare I’m a little more liberal).

I’m unequivocally pro-life, I’m against same-sex marriage (though they deserve the same rights as heterosexual couples), support universal healthcare, and I am pro-gun rights. That’s just some of my views, I could go on and on.

I have always considered that test laughably stupid. It put me as a leftist authoritarian for Heaven’s sake!

I guess it got the authoritarian part right, at least.
