I’m a Neoconservative. I have no problem with the label in and of itself, but it’s laughable the way the media uses it to try to hint at some shadowy sinister group of puppetmasters hijacking the Republican party and controlling the president.
A neoconservative is a blend of traditional liberal and conservative virtues while disgarding some of the “baggage” of those labels. A neoconservative shares the conservative’s love of America, freedom, and liberty. Neoconservatives disagree with some traditional conservatives’ “America-first-ism”, isolationism, and cold realist politics. Neoconservatives share liberals concern for the poor, oppressed, and suffering throughout the world. Neoconservatives don’t think having a “bleeding heart” is a bad thing. Neoconservatives depart from many traditional liberals by rejecting the “blame the West” mentality, refusing to accept the sort of relativism that explains away totalitarian systems in foreign countries, and recognizing the failure of socialism.
According to the quiz results, Neoconservatives…
Want the US to be the world’s unchallenged superpower
Yes, precisely because when it’s all said and done, Americans DON’T want to run an empire.
**Share unwavering support for Israel **
I’m not happy with the plight of the Palestinian refugees. They’ve been mistreated by all sides. After the foundation of the modern state of Israel, the parents and grandparents of today’s refugees chose to side with the surrounding Arab countries in their war against Israel. Israel won. The Palestinians’ “allies” could have accepted refugees and given them homes and lives, but the Arab countries prefer them where they are as political pawns. It’s an extremely unfortunate situation.
**Support American unilateral action **
In a just cause, yes. There’s nothing magical or sacred about UN approval.
**Support preemptive strikes to remove perceived threats to US security **
That’s too general a statement. I believe in the Just War doctrine, and I believe that if other conditions are met, a pre-emptive strike may be allowable in certain circumstances. Because the calculus depends heavily on intelligence, and because we’ve discovered major flaws in our intelligence capabilities, I think we’re morally obliged to fix those flaws before we find ourselve again having to make decisions on bad information.
**Promote the development of an American empire **
No.
**Equate American power with the potential for world peace **
Yes.
**Seek to democratize the Arab world **
Yes, absolutely. Taking a step back in history, I believe that we had to win the Cold War. I believe that in winning that war, we were forced to at times support bad regimes against the Soviet sponsored alternatives. I believe that it is now our duty to help clean up that mess.
Push regime change in states deemed threats to the US or its allies
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the states that are deemed threats are also the ones that are the most oppressive of their own people.
Historical neoconservative: President Teddy Roosevelt
Modern neoconservative: President Ronald Reagan
Absolutely.
Neo-conservatives proudly and unapologetically believe that America is and should continue to be a force for good in the world.
