Are you a Star Trek fan?

I have been a big Star Trek fan since childhood. My favorite series is TOS, but I enjoy TNG very much as well. I liked watching Voyager and Enterprise, but for some reason I can’t get into them as reruns.

The best characters, IMHO, are Spock and Data, because although not human, they portrayed the virtue of trying to better oneself; Spock through relentless pursuit of logic, and Data through his desire to become more human.

I love Star Trek, and yes I am over the top. I belong to STARFLEET International. Great group of fans. Made many a friend there. The TOS is my fav, It was the first and paved the way for the others. Kirk is my fav Capt. Scotty my fav character. I have met all the original cast in person, and several from other shows. As well as cast members from Stargate SG-1, Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica - the Original, not that re-made junk.

In one of the movies they show Picard visiting home at Christmas time. It is in the Nexus granted, but it had to be something on his mind to be there. I never felt Trek was anti-religion. I just never saw religon as being a plot device to sell a sci-fi story. Non of the characters were shown as anti religious or anything. Other than alien religions, Vulcan, Bajorian etc, it wasn’t really mentioned for any one. Christian , Muslim, Buddist etc.

I do not watch the new Galactica series, mainly because I am a die hard of the Original, but I have caught bits of it here and there. They had one on the other night that was very pro abortion. Even when they made it illegal to have an abortion, the President was sickened to do so, because she was a champion of women being able to make a choice and referenced her fighting for that before the destruction of the colonies. After her decision people were in an uproar over it. Looks like with less than 50,000 survivors anyone caught taking a life would receive the most server punishment they could get. Sorry, I got off topic…

It is a fact that Gene was anti-religion, and he wanted to show that humans had evolved beyond the need for religion. That’s why when it turns up on the show, it’s the alien races who are religious and not the humans. That’s also why you never saw the humans celebrating Christmas – because in Gene’s vision of the 23rd/24th century, humans no longer needed religion.

Just because he believed this didn’t make him right, but hey, it was his show (until the studio took power away from him).

And the comical thing is that the first movies after his death, Generations, featured a Christmas.

You know, I always had more of a thing for Crusher myself (I was devastated when Doctor Pulaski was introduced). But my wife can tell you I prefer red heads.

Interestingly enough, humans of the 24th century had also evolved beyond the need for television! I remember one episode where TV was explained as being a form of entertainment that died out in the 21st century.

My favorite Treks are Next Generation and Voyager. I also like the original series, and I liked Deep Space Nine before every single episode got to be about that boring political/religious conflict among the denizens of that part of the universe (I don’t remember their names). I have yet to see Enterprise; I just haven’t gotten around to it. Favorite captain is Picard, but I like Janeway, too. I love Worf, especially after he grew his hair longer and started to look more like a Klingon.

I like Q, but I never believed that nonsense he spouted about life in the Continuum being a big bore.

I also like Spock, Tuvok, Geordie LaForge, 7 of 9, Chakotay, and Data (how could you not love someone with a cat named “Spot”? ). And I may be one of only three or four people in the world who like Wesley Crusher, especially when he got a bit older. I’d still love to know how he did at Starfleet Academy after that cheating scandal.

I have always loathed, with the white-hot intensity of 10,000 burning suns, those stupid thigh-high dresses the female crew wore in the original series. UGH!

I think it’s been more than twice. I’d love to see Voyager reruns. Anyone know if they’re airing anywhere?

Spike TV is running Voyager reruns.

I’m a Star Trek TOS fan. I never cared for the new nambe pamby captains. My wife gets a kick at how I can tell her what episode it is just by seeing the first few seconds of the episode.

When I was a kid we had three channels, well two ABC when we could tune it in was snowy and faded in and out. Of course ABC had the only good shows on at the time Green Hornet and Batman. So all my father would watch was cowboy shows, and cowboy shows. I hate cowboy shows.
Hence I’m not a big Star Wars fan. Star Trek rocks.

Well I did like one cowboy show F Troop so my favorite captain is Captain Wilton Parmenter.

Star Trek saved my parents Television from getting a brick thrown in it.

How is it they can transverse the Cosmos at 9x the speed of light… but couldn’t invent seat belts?

I just recently found out about a fan group that’s doing new Star Trek: TOS episodes: startreknewvoyages.com

The concept is to do new shows, using the same Kirk / Spock / McCoy characters, but not necessarily try to copy Shatner / Nimoy / Kelly (though I think they end up doing that). They say it’s a serious effort, not a parody, and while that’s true from the scripting, Kirk’s hair is just a bit too big (at least in the episode I watched, In Harm’s Way) to be taken seriously. Imagine a bad Elvis impersonator as Captain Kirk. I’ve just seen one episode so far, In Harms Way, maybe the makeup on later ones are better.

But I had no problems with the script or “look” of the show! In Harms Way is a creative sequel to The City on the Edge of Forever and The Doomsday Machine, and backstory for The Menagerie. CGI even on home computers is good enough now to give the special effects a lot of punch. You won’t believe what the ol’ Enterprise is capable of!

It has caught the attention of the old Star Trek people. The original Captain Decker from Doomsday Machine reprised his role briefly in In Harm’s Way. Walter Koenig has been in another episode as Chekov. George Takei is in the next one to be released. D.C Fontana and David Gerrold (The Trouble With Tribbles) have written scripts. Those are just a few of the notables.

It’s worth a look at least, for any Star Trek: TOS (The Old Series) fan.
