Are you going to get a flu shot?

In the past, I’ve gotten sick with the actual flu two out of three times I’ve had the shot. My primary doctor swears up and down that it’s only coincidental and medically impossible to get the flu from the vaccine, but I know many other people who have had a similar experience.

I plan on getting one when my immune system is back up a little, as I have a cold/cough right now, so hopefully next week.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the flu shot?
 
No - I dislike needles.
When DS was younger, we got it as he was always getting sick. However, last year I decided against it and then he got a cold and went around telling everyone that he fell sick because Mom did not give him the flu shot. (Funny boy) Guess what that very night, he went into the Doctor’s office for a shot, but I did not take one.
IMHO these shots have only the previous years bugs covered so you can still get what it does not cover. And unless you are at risk ( some health condition or work with kids…) or a senior, then I agree it is important to get it. Else it is better to build up your own immune system.
 
no and i won’t for my DS either. i only get the shots that are required for school. other than that we don’t touch them
 
My doctor wants me to get it due to being pregnant, which is supposedly one of the high-risk categories.
 
I do not get the flu shot due to hating needles. Besides, I have only gotten the flue once in the past 10 years. That was on a cruise…ummm…ohoh…I booked the same ship and same room I had on the cruise I got the flu on.:eek:

None of our gang (DS, DH nor I) have ever taken the flu shot, so, no 🙂

Normally I do, but I started Methotrexate for RA this year and I have to check with my Doc about whether to get it or not…:hmmm:
 
Since most of my children have asthma, I get the flu shot for all seven of them annually. We’ve never gotten the flu. I wouldn’t think of missing my flu shots any more than I would miss a vaccine. Not that vaccines and flu shots are exactly the same thing, the vaccine is far more important, but that having seven children sick at once is tremendously overwhelming and I’d rather avoid all that comes with it: appointments, making up school work, staying up all night with sick children, endless trips to the doctor and pharmacy, staying up all night because I’m sick, cleaning after everyone is better. Plus, my husband travels a lot so he usually misses the fun. Flu shots are a small price to pay to be flu-free. However, if we had gotten the flu anyway, I’d be much more wary of hauling everyone to the doctor to get shots. When I homeschooled, we were rarely sick, so flu shots weren’t as important.
 
Two years ago I was 14 weeks pregnant and got a flu shot. The next week I went in for a routine OB checkup and found out the baby had recently died. I miscarried a seemingly perfecly formed baby boy. It was devastating. I may be completely off base but all I can think of is the flu shot because of the timing. My dr. says it had nothing to do with it. On the other hand, the miscarriage was not reported to the agency that handles the flu shot so how do they know how often it happens?

I’m sure for most people the shot would be fine. I am currently 29 weeks pregnant and will NOT be getting a flu shot until the baby is born.

Whenever I’ve gotten the flu, it’s always been when I was in school classrooms or around large groups of children. Or, when I was traveling for speaking engagements and in close quarters with sneezing, coughing people and breathing in 50% recycled air while on the plane.

However, I’m staying put this winter and won’t be exposing myself to all the lovely germs coating the fingers of little children (except for family), nor will I be traveling by air.

Soooo, hopefully I’ll have a better chance of being well.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I am just about 14 weeks pregnant myself…

I’m very sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I avoid just about everything my body doesn’t need when I’m pregnant for that very reason. There is just so much that we don’t know about these shots and their affect on the unborn baby or the pregnancy in general. Same with prescription or OTC drugs. I’m always amazed and a little scared when I hear what sorts of medicines doctors prescribe to pregnant women. I wouldn’t get a flu shot if I was pregnant.

Me too. I’ve enver had the shot before. I’ve had the same experience as you, knowing people who get the flu within days of the shot. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not. Either way, I’ll probably be getting the shot this year. My immune system has NOT been the same since I’ve been pregnant. 2 colds, a sinus infection, and a respiratory infection since May.
 
I’m planning on it and also going to have my 7 yr old get it, he and I get the MOST sick during the flu season, the rest of my kids and hubby get sick one time for a couple days and then they are just dandy and me and the 7 yr old get it over and over and last winter the 7 yr old missed so much school and had him to the emergency room for fluids more times than I can even remember, so this will be our first time trying the flu shot, if we are still just as sick this flu season, well, then we’ll know that it didn’t work for us, but heck, I’m willing to try it and see if maybe we can lower the sick time, nothing more difficult than being a mom who is sick and hubby can take No time off, oh, how I dread it, its like a feeling of complete uselessness, the kids need you and you can barely pull yourself out of bed 😦
