Are you literally on fire if you go to hell?

I personally think it is symbolic of the pain of being separated from God forever. It kind of seems ridiculous to me that you would be on fire forever.

Before Christ’s second coming, hell is a place of spiritual separation, meaning the suffering will be of a spiritual nature. After the new heaven and new earth, those in hell will receive bodies again, so it is possible that the people will be literally (physically) on fire.

The real pain of hell is mental anguish at having lost everything,
absolutely everything,
an experience we can’t imagine.

Having said that,
Jesus made it clear from his lacks of details about hell that we are not to think about it.
Our goal is Heavan, and God wants everybody to get there.

Have you ever heard of “the fire of love”?

Scripture (even Old Testament), writings of the saints, revelations of the Sacred Heart, Catholic mystics … there’s a lot of material you can research.

It is a place of absolute terror. The thing is, on Earth, there is a limit to the amount of pain you feel, because your body will die, and your soul is released. Hell is no picnic. You have NO limit of the amount of extent of pain you can feel. Yes, there is fire and ice in hell.

The liberal catholics always say about purgatory and hell being “just a place where you’re sad because you are separate from God” or just emotional pain, or “not really real fire, but figurative”. Of course the enemy wants it sugar-coated!

Think about the evil things people do here when they’re tempted by demons. Do you think that satan cares for you any more than those people? Satan hates you and every other human, merely because of what God has done for us, in making us in His image.

Did Jesus die an awful death on the cross figuratively? Nope. Neither is Hell figurative. It’s been described by the saints and by the bible, as well. Demons dwell there, and they take a sick pleasure in torturing and tormenting those who choose to go to hell. Remember, those who go to hell ultimately choose to go there themselves.

Matthew 13:
40“As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mark 9
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48where
“‘their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched.’e
God is not exaggerating. As broad as is Mercy, also is His Justice.

This is a good book about the dogma of hell:

👍 You are dead right! Jesus spoke of hell in parables and physical terms because He knew people cannot understand the nature of life after death - which is beyond our experience. He wanted to impress on us the horrific consequences of selfishness and the lust for power which transforms persons into monsters of cruelty and leads to the incalculable amount of unnecessary suffering and bloodshed that has dominated human society for thousands of years. Hell is a state of mind not a raging inferno…

Maybe you should read this instead of believing in fairy tales.

Apocalypse (Revelation) 19:20 found 2
And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet, who wrought signs before him, wherewith he seduced them who received the character of the beast, and who adored his image. These two were cast alive into the pool of fire, burning with brimstone.

Apocalypse (Revelation) 20:9 found 2
And there came down fire from God out of heaven, and devoured them; and the devil, who seduced them, was cast into the pool of fire and brimstone, where both the beast

Apocalypse (Revelation) 20:14 found 2
And hell and death were cast into the pool of fire. This is the second death.
23
Apocalypse (Revelation) 20:15 found 2
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the pool of fire.

Matthew 5:22 found 2
But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Mark 9:44 found 2
And if thy foot scandalize thee, cut it off. It is better for thee to enter lame into life everlasting, than having two feet, to be cast into the hell of unquenchable fire:

Hebrews 10:27 found 2
But a certain dreadful expectation of judgment, and the rage of a fire which shall consume the adversaries.

Maybe you should consider the role of the parables and symbolism in the teaching of Jesus rather than making discourteous assertions… Have you ever heard of Semitic hyperbole?

Who in their right mind would choose to go to “a place of absolute terror” where they are “tortured and tormented by demons”? Hell is certainly not a lunatic asylum!

Indeed.

Yet people continue to sin every day knowing that this is where it will lead.

We are all very good at self denial.

Maybe you should think about God’s truth instead of dreaming up reasons not to believe the Bible. Hyperbole! Ha!

Sinners choose Hell because to them it’s less terrible than God’s face. And then they are tortured in unquenchable fire forever.

the burning pain of fire is the best analogy we have for the pain suffered by a soul separated from God. In the case of the permanent separation of hell consider it as a person who has set himself on fire deliberately, in full knowledge of what that would mean.

Hyperbole, symbolism, etc. are all present in the bible.

115 According to an ancient tradition, one can distinguish between two senses of Scripture: the literal and the spiritual, the latter being subdivided into the allegorical, moral and anagogical senses. The profound concordance of the four senses guarantees all its richness to the living reading of Scripture in the Church.

116 The literal sense is the meaning conveyed by the words of Scripture and discovered by exegesis, following the rules of sound interpretation: "All other senses of Sacred Scripture are based on the literal."83

117 The spiritual sense. Thanks to the unity of God’s plan, not only the text of Scripture but also the realities and events about which it speaks can be signs.

Maybe you should stop making such railing accusations against people who don’t openly conflict with any of what the Church teaches.

Unsubstantiated assertion - which implies that God is a monster!
IV. HELL

**1033 **We cannot be united with God unless we freely choose to love him. But we cannot love God if we sin gravely against him, against our neighbor or against ourselves: "He who does not love remains in death. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him."612 Our Lord warns us that we shall be separated from him if we fail to meet the serious needs of the poor and the little ones who are his brethren.613 To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God’s merciful love means remaining separated from him for ever by our own free choice. This state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed is called “hell.”

**1034 **Jesus often speaks of “Gehenna” of “the unquenchable fire” reserved for those who to the end of their lives refuse to believe and be converted, where both soul and body can be lost.614 Jesus solemnly proclaims that he "will send his angels, and they will gather . . . all evil doers, and throw them into the furnace of fire,"615 and that he will pronounce the condemnation: "Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire!"616

**1035 The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, “eternal fire.”**617 The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.

**1036 **The affirmations of Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church on the subject of hell are a call to the responsibility incumbent upon man to make use of his freedom in view of his eternal destiny. They are at the same time an urgent call to conversion: "Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few."618

Since we know neither the day nor the hour, we should follow the advice of the Lord and watch constantly so that, when the single course of our earthly life is completed, we may merit to enter with him into the marriage feast and be numbered among the blessed, and not, like the wicked and slothful servants, be ordered to depart into the eternal fire, into the outer darkness where "men will weep and gnash their teeth."619

1037** God predestines no one to go to hell;620 for this, a willful turning away from God (a mortal sin) is necessary,** and persistence in it until the end. In the Eucharistic liturgy and in the daily prayers of her faithful, the Church implores the mercy of God, who does not want “any to perish, but all to come to repentance”:621

Father, accept this offering
from your whole family.
Grant us your peace in this life,
save us from final damnation,
and count us among those you have chosen.622

Father, accept this offering
from your whole family.
Grant us your peace in this life,
save us from final damnation,
and count us among those you have chosen.622
New translation:

Therefore, Lord, we pray: graciously accept this oblation of our service, and that of your whole family; order our days in your peace, and command that we be delivered from eternal damnation and counted among the flock of those you have chosen.

I agree that wording did not sound right.

The damned choose a lesser, temporary good - love of self, the world, pleasure, pride, etc.

Some will say, “if they knew God, then they never would have chosen Hell”. So, it is claimed that God is punishing people who really didn’t know what to do.

But that is not true because the voice of conscience teaches us what to do. If you go against your conscience, you’re going against your own well-being.

Precisely. 👍 Evil is very clear-sighted!
