Are you offended/disturbed by female clergy in Protestantism?

The good women pastors are NOT motivated by disobedience but by a belief that it is willed by God
What is willed by God is not contrary to that which God has already revealed through His Church.
and that their Scripture interpretation is the true one.
Cheeky!

Their interpretation, which is contrary to the 2000 year history of the CC, is the true one?

That’s like a kindergartner telling his father, a dentist, that she knows that she won’t get cavities from eating her entire bucket of Halloween candy because that’s her personal interpretation of the issue. :whacky:

Where does that leave truth? Is truth dependent on interpretation?

Since our interpretation contradicts theirs which interpretation is true? We can’t both be right. So which one interprets it correctly?

If their interpretation is true, then the Apostolic Churches got it wrong for 2000 years.

Do you even realize the ramifications?

If the Church got it wrong on this one, maybe she got the Canon of the Bible wrong too, Maybe she is also wrong about the Eucharist, Mary, Confession Baptism, the Trinity and the two natures of Christ?

Perhaps Christianity is wrong.

I wasn’t sure where to put this topic but it seemed to fit here I guess.

Anyway, I was walking through the shopping mall recently and saw a woman wearing a Roman collar and walking with a Bible and I remembered that my local Anglican church has a female Vicar (think thats what they call her, maybe Reverend). I must admit, I was taken aback and felt… odd. It made me feel odd because, well, the Priesthood is what it is and a woman attempting to fill that role is unnatural. I don’t know if that makes sense.

This is besides those female clergy who are openly lesbian and have partners. I remember watching an American show with 2 female vicars who were married lesbians and one shot of them had them up on the altar with bread and wine and it gave me the chills.
My cousin once took me to his Episcopalian church in Oakland, and they had a female priest, wearing full vestments, saying the Episcopal mass. She wasn’t bad looking. But it was weird. She later left the priesthood to take up an “alternative lifestyle” with her girlfriend.

I am not offended but I am often amazed. My family is nearly all Protestant, I have been shocked by many things I’ve seen in their various communions. When you boil it all down, and this sounds horribly unecumenical, but the whole basis of Protestantism is a “roll your own” religion. Probably a female in clerics clothing is one of the lesser innovations. You ever seen a confetti cannon? It’s a neat addition to the lazer light show at worship time. What’s a roman collar here or there among such innovations?
Not that that sort of thing is my cup of tea, but to be fair, confetti cannons and laser light shows are not actually contrary to universal Christian doctrine, Tradition and Scripture the way that things such as female “clergy” are. In fact if you go to some Catholic liturgies especially in some non-Anglo countries you might see similar things which are distasteful perhaps but not heretical.

You are not reading my post. I did not say its the will of God nor the right interpretation. I said, the protestant people are MOTIVATED by that belief.

Who are you to say whats distasteful?
Thank God the Church is universal and has a richness of expression when it comes to forms of worshipping God and is not limited to your taste.

He is entitled to his opinion also Marlene. And many of us would agree with him. Thank God you live in a Country, where you can have this freedom. Catholics are dying for the sake of the cross where I am at, and I think they would Just like to have the freedom to worship without fear of persecution. The contemporary worship services are a luxury and a product of the western mind. They have no basis in the reallity of Christianity on a global scale, which cost our brothers and sisters much.
Peace :signofcross:

That cuts the heart of the matter, Benedict. Thank you. Christianity is not cheap, but we in the West make it that way a lot of the time. Shame on us and our fog machines and women clergy and all manners of heretical wandering.

Come to think of it. I would have to say much of the issues we face in the Church today are the product of the largess and blessings we in the west have been granted. Those who are under persecution, I.E. the Christians in Sudan, the Christians in Iraq (also the Sabiens), The Christians everywhere who are facing persecution, would look at the Church in the Western world and shake their heads in amazement. They are more interested in remaining Faithful to the Gospel, and surviving, than attempting to bring in views that are contrary to 2000 years of Church teaching. May God grant them relief from their persecutions and reward their faithfullness. I think many in the Western world would rather “play at Church” than do what is required. They would rather push their political agendas, such as Women and Gays in the pastorates, than take a good hard look at what it means to be obedient. Just my private musings…:twocents:

Thank you my dear friend. I would love to see these feminist come to where I am at and march in the streets…Ok maybe not. It wouldnt be pretty. We do however have many wonderful women in the state department working to this end though. At great cost to themselves. It would be nice if women could be allowed simply to drive, hold jobs, walk to the market un escorted, and do many other things that Women in the Western world take for granted.
Also I love the links you provide. I for one, will not let anyone forget about the people over here when I return to the States. Otherwise, I feel like our work here was done in vain. Peace :signofcross:

**nickybr38;
  1. Although she was a great speaker she was often so consumed with being ‘fair’ and ‘ecumenical’ that I couldn’t respect much of what she said. You know what I’m talking about?**
Oh yea, I had a Jesuit priest. He was mentioning revelations of other religions as equally being God’s Word, and said the stories in the NT about demon-possesion were fables written before the age of science. I certainly didn’t respect his oppinion any more than you did that lady minister’s, and if I was as rude as those parishioners you talk about, I’d have shouted out loudly during the Mass. But instead I talked to him in the sacristy.

Those people who speak powerfully but are unwilling to say; THIS is truth…’ I never saw a male pastor who ever compromised what he believed to save offending someone in the audience.

I experienced that many times with both male priests, they are often afraid to say anything controversial because someone might get hurt or offended. At least thats a problem in most catholic Churches in N-Europe.

2. Her parishioners had no respect for her. This had NOTHING to do with her personality.

No apparantly just her gender made her the victim of such disrespectful behaviour.

** she was the kind of lady I would have NEVER back talked (despite her ecumenism). But I saw, on several occasions, members of her congregation SPEAK UP during church services to correct her IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SERVICE. It was disturbing and I hate to say it but I truly doubt this would have happened had a man been at the pulpit.**

Looks like these people were not decent Christians. I have sat in many services lead by women pastors and no one ever interrupted their preaching. Also these pastors were as knowlegable and good preachers as their male colleagues. There is a saying among children if a big guy hits a smaller guy: “Why dont you go beat on someone who is your own size?” The same with the people you saw, if they publicly humiliated a female minister but wouldn’t have dared to conduct themselves like that if she were a man, shame on them… double shame for their behaviour and their cowardice.

3. On a few rare occasions we had guest male speakers and every time we did, without fail, members of the congregation would comment on how NICE it was to see a man in the front of the church.

When I sometimes go to a non-Catholic church and experience a non-theologian or a non-male preacher I say, how nice it was to see an unlearned person or a female preacher… its refreshing and it can give some different perspectives.

4. She couldn’t seem to decide if we were at a Christian church, Buddhist, Native… etc. She’d use traditional worship motions from other religions…

Again that’s then the problem, and a problem I have experienced with male priests too who are syncretists (“all roads lead to heaven” kind of folkes).

**
I am not offended when I see female clergy. but I do wonder how effective a female can be in that position. No matter how much we scream about equality the bottom line is men in leadership are given a certain amount of respect just by being male that women have to work HARD to earn and sometimes the only way a woman earns that respect is through behaving in very masculine ways. **

Yea, isn’t it sad? You are right, many people really fall into that trap. And that is what continually causes negative feminism. It reminds me of my mom who is a teacher. She would always be respected but over the last ten years when young Muslim men started to attend the school, she told me: “These young men come from patriarchal societies. They state quite openly that they don’t respect the women teachers and they lie to our faces and make trouble in class”.
In my own school years I saw the same tendency what you describe. Boys were favourized, even by women teachers, and always held to be more intelligent, their oppinion mattered more during class discussion. Male teachers were more pupular than women teachers and they also had more self esteem due to the whole upbringing of the system. And I think selfesteem is a huge factor. When women are costantly told they have to be pretty, little pleasers to be loved they become that, and loose respect from men when they try to function professionally. And by the way, knowlege and standing firm are not natural masculine traits more than feminine. Another thing about respect. There is a different between respect and fear, as you know.

Whether it’s right or wrong for this to be so, it’s what I’ve seen in my experience and I really don’t think female clergy can be as effective as male clergy because of this innate desire we ALL seem to have to respect male leadership more.

I respect people for their character, virtue, courage and knowlege. A man has to earn the respect just like a woman in my eyes.If I have prejudice, like also if I have racial prejudice, I know the problem lies in me, and not in the person infront of me.

To the person who made the comment about female clergy leading to gay clergy and etc…do you have any real data you can provide to support that position?

Pentecostalism is again an example.most of them are very against homosexual behaviour but pro women in leadership and they are growing everywhere.
I think traditional Protestant churches, most of them, are vulnerable to the spirits of the times because they don’t have a common authority like Catholics do.
Now as for gay clergy per se, I am a bit confused. We seem to have a high number of gay Catholic clergy in my country.
Anyway, I have a funny taste in my mouth dialoging with someone who has so clearly stated that my views and oppinions matter less than the male posters here, simply because of my gender. It saddens me, and frankly, if people think the way you do, I’d rather not know too much about it, because I might, in turn, loose respect for them.

Agree with him on what precisely? Are we talking about lazershows? And how do you know if anyone who likes a good lazershow would be heroic during persecution or not. You dont.
Believe me I have been with Roman Catholics in Eastern Catholic rites and in Middle Eastern rites where my Roman Catholic brothers felt odd. But their feeling can’t make a universal church into a uniform entity.
Now I went to an African Mass, and all these were dancing and clapping their hands… and actually alot of modern Evangelicalism is inspired by the African joy of life-worship, and that in turn has inspired the Catholic charismatic movement.
Then there is South America where there are alot of charismatic Masses and the Charismatic movement has in many places become the majority of Catholics… and these are as good Catholics as any.
Now you can say that you are a persecuted Catholic and therefore you have a right to say that contemporary worship has little to do with reality. But when did you last personally find yourself at a contemporary worship service? I have many friends whom God reached through such services, precisely because God does not hold Himself too good to be CONTEMPORARY.
I went to many of these contemporary services where we are celebrating all good gifts from the Lord… and our problems as “rich westerners” might be different than yours… our problems might be depression and sickness and lack of faith… and then I go to a contemporary service and I get my needs met, I get encouraged by the Word preached, the sincere fellowhip and prayer, and the good music and I see people in numbers getting healed from diseases and from lonelyness and faith crisis.

I dont belittle your struggles. I have wept a great deal over precisely your struggles that I have followed closely. You are our brothers in dire need. But please don’t judge people who are different from you and have different needs, okay, because all people are different.

My apologies Marlene. perhaps I should have been a little clearer as to my identity. I am not Iraqi. I am an American soldier over here. I am glad you are aware of what the Christians over here are going thru. Its not a matter of difference, its a matter of frivolity that I judge. Im one of those “rich westerners.” I find it repugnant that we would change the richness of Christiantiy into a dog and pony show. I believe in entitled to that opinion, even if it disagrees with yours. Either way, we are both making a judgement. I just dont happen to agree with you. Peace

I am not offended by female clergys, the disobedience of the Lords wishes on the other hand, saddens and offends me yes.
That is my honest, humble opinion.

You are not reading my post. I did not say its the will of God nor the right interpretation. I said, the protestant people are MOTIVATED by that belief.
Yes, we do understand that. But what we are questioning is whether you think that belief is correct or whether you think any belief if sincerely held is okay?
Where does the truth come into the equation?

Who are you to say whats distasteful?
What do you mean by that. Of course Peter can have a say in what’s distasteful. The very term says it. It is a matter of taste. On that score one can be relative but truth is not. That is why he put it very well. One might find something distasteful but not heretical.
Thank God the Church is universal and has a richness of expression when it comes to forms of worshipping God and is not limited to your taste.
What is wrong with one having taste? I prefer a solemn service, some prefer Latin, other prefer the boisterous one. Peter never said there is anything wrong with regards taste, so long as it is not heretical. You should pay closer attention to his post.

I don’t think anyone thinks less of you because of your gender. I am female and have never had a problem here (except once, when Ia guy I was debating suddenly decided that I am not philosophical enough when he found out I was female and yet for several posts he said that he thought he was debating a seasoned philosopher )

Anyway, you are guilty of the same when you came to the conclusion that my anti-feminist view must be because I am an ignorant male chauvinist.

I just find it strange that a Christian would talk about other Christian’s worship services like this. Im certainly glad that I never heard such oppinions among my Catholic friends and I hope no Protestant would see this. This is no more decent than when certain fundamentalists say we re-crucify Jesus in our services and worship idols.
I personally have visited Lutheran, Eastern Orthodox, Melkite Catholic, Byzantine, Messianic, Pentecostal and Catholic services… and never in all these years have I been in any service that deserved such a label.
I went one time, one, to a questionable evangelical meeting that turned out to be preaching money instead of the Gospel and that was once. That was not a service but a socalled crusade
It seems you judge services on the form instead of on the content of the hearts of those present.

And yea, of course I know what has been going on in Bagdad and other places in Irak. Thank God for the Kurds, may God bless them and may the blood of the martyrs witness to the Muslims. I personally like to support Open Doors ministry, they support Christians in Irak and encourage them in the burning points and they smuggle Bibles into forbidden places in the middle east. They also help materially and like in Amnesty Intl. the members of Open Doors write letters to Christians who are in prison for their faith…
I am sure that these persecuted brothers and sisters care that Jesus is being loved and worshipped but Im also sure that its a Western luxury sign when Christians slander each others services and go into fights over details and form instead of serving Jesus and winning souls for Him.

And of course the western civilisations have a right to find forms of worship that they want, like the Africans, the Arabs etc. and if the majority of my generation find it easier to worship God through contemporary music than gregorian chant then lets have that freedom.

As for me, I feel most home with Messianic Jews who use their whole body to worship and all kinds of instruments to make a joyful noise unto the Lord, that’s my taste personally, and it doesn’t have to be yours, And I wont say that its objectively distasteful iwhatever you like, because thats not my business.
Everywhere where an authentic enthusiasm for Jesus and a personal experience of His salvation is present there is my brother and sister and their style is less important.

As you can see I am not responding to your posts. So don’t waste your time.
