Are you scared of dying?

What i’m about to say is based on my own experiences.

To start wiht I had the experience of my father turning up in my room the night he died. He started with an apology for 20 years of very cruel treatment, we argued and conversed, and then at the end he gave this terrifying scream whilst trying to ward something off. It was so frightening that I started to scream. Then he promptly disappeared.

It was another four days before I found out from human sources he had died, since his body wasn’t found for four days.

As far as I’m concerned he went to hell, so I hate to disillusion you, but the “Catholics / Orthodox / Muslims etc” are right when it comes to judgement after death.

On the other hand I sometimes get a sense of peace when people die, but they’re usually people who’ve had some sort of Christian allegiance. A few weeks ago my wife and I went down to the Gold Coast to discuss elements of my being an MC for a wedding for one of her relatives. We got back about 5pm. Not long after I said to my wife, “I’m getting that sense of peace. I think someone might have just died.” I then named someone whom I knew was in a bad way from emphysema. I wasn’t sure, but i thought it was a possibility.

Two days later a mutual friend rang to say this chap had indeed died. When I rang his widow to give my condolences, I asked her when he died. It was about 5.30pm, the same time I felt the “sense of peace”. The difference this time is that I had mentioned it to my wife, and received confirmation a few days later. So I had a witness so to speak.

As a pagan, you’re wrong. But to get back to the original OP, God doesn’t keep a long list of sins because He enjoys it. In the final analysis, sin hurts people, both ourselves and others. That’s why He’s hostile to sin. So the thing to do is to confess sins, and try to treat other people well. If you do that, you shouldn’t have much to fear from death.

That’s not to say there might not be any pain in dying. There could be quite a lot. But if you have a pretty clear conscience, you won’t have to fear what my father found, after he’d indulged his cruelty for 20 years without remorse. On the other hand, as I said, I get a real “sense of peace” sometimes when other people die. But if I later find out who it was (I don’t always), they’re always basically good people with a Christian affiliiation.
wow, thank you for sharing this

Do you have huge arms, i mean carrying that phonebook sized note pad around:D
That is a very interesting idea.
Now thats silly.
I carry a small book about and file it when it is used up. But there is a truth to what you say, Our sins are many despite our struggle. I started the records when I was 9 and now
fifty years later they indeed add up to a whole boxroom full of files.

This is my space where I can pray, surrounded in humility by my sins.

peace.

I dreaded death, It is not good to bring suffer and pain on them- family loved ones; therefore I shall be strong and be good and pray to live until our Lord His beautiful Kingdom come.
but I dread it no longer. See in this world, many sufferings, even in happiness, it is less calm, but the Heaven, there the Redeemer, eternal happiness.
I only want my family know that -if I have lived a short time in this world, I am going to heaven, and I will watch over them, and love them. And want my loved ones endure my death patiently. knowing I am there.

You might find it helpful to read Jesus’ account of the judgement of souls, He being the Judge and therefor the expert and the final word. Try to live a life of practical kindness to others, however small or however large those acts of kindness, Jesus will take them as done personally to Him

An encouraging poem from a Divine Word Missionary priest:

The following poem “But” was written by a Divine Word Missionary, inspiring us to love of others, even in the smallest gestures of human kindness.
It was only a sunny smile,
And little it cost in the giving;
But it scattered the night
Like morning light,
And made the day worth living.
Through life’s dark warp a woof it wove
In shining colours of hope and love;
And the angels smiled as they watched above,
Yet little it cost in the giving.

**
It was only a kindly word, a word that was lightly spoken;
But not in vain,
For it stilled the pain
Of a heart that was nearly broken
It strengthened a faith beset with fears,
And groping blindly through mists of tears,
For light to brighten the coming years,
Although it was lightly spoken.

**
It was only a helping hand
And it seemed of little availing;
But its clasp was warm,
And it saved from harm
A brother whose strength was failing.
Its touch was tender as angels’ wings
But it rolled the stone from the hidden springs
And pointed the way to higher things,
Though it seemed of little availing.
How very very beautiful!

Trishie?

May I have copy this poem and your words, Trishie!

I like them!

there exists no “small thing” that can condemn one to hell. There exists only one thing, and it is huge, that is rejecting God’s love and mercy at the moment of death and judgement. If you think otherwise, you need to go to the Catechism and steep yourself in Catholic teaching on the subject.

God loves you.

Pray daily: Jesus, I trust in You.
:gopray: Jesus, I trust in You.:angel1:

I do know what you mean, as I feel the same. I’m confident that I will continue to do my best to avoid sin in my life, but like the rest of the human race, I will fall now and then. The person who knows this the best is God Himself. He also does not expect perfection from me, or from the OP. 😉 If any of us were perfect, we would be God. 🙂

Therefore, I am not afraid of how God will judge my sincerity and my efforts, as long as I have repented and tried to repair wrongs when possible. We cannot expect more of ourselves than God expects of us, as He knows the limits of our capabilities.

So, to sum up, I agree with puzzleannie.

Jesus told his disciples, “Be not afraid.” He wants us to see Him as our companion, not our adversary. He told us also not to worry about tomorrow. (I classify death as belonging to tomorrow. :))
😊 :)😃

Bless God! Praise the Lord!

I am not afraid of death so much as dying. After working in a hospital for 30 years as a critical care nurse, I am acutely aware of the suffering that can accompany terminal illness. I am scared of that suffering, yet I also know that God can and does give people the strength to bear it. That I have seen.

And, to tell you the truth, I do not want my suffering prolonged because my family cannot bear to let me go, or feel they have to do everything possible to keep me alive because some physician will not be up front with them on my real chances of survivng something. I have seen enough of that, even when a person has a living will expressing their wishes. They do not guarantee anything. I do not want tubes down my nose force-feeding me, or needles stuck into me to provide fluids my body cannot handle because my organs are failing and my body is blowing up like a balloon because somebody said we must always provide hydration and nutrition and nobody wants to suffer from a guilty conscience by not allowing it. If I am dying, I want to be allowed to die a natural death without prolonging or adding to my suffering. And please give me enough pain medicine to relieve my pain.

I realize this sounds depressing and cynical, and maybe some will say it is against Church teaching, but this is where my fear really lies in the whole dying thing. I have just seen too much.

But since I have no knowledge of how and where and of what I am to die, I must trust God in this and ask him for the grace and strength to bear whatever comes my way, and maybe my purgatory will be a little shorter–who knows? In any case, I don’t obsess about this, but sometimes, in those private moments, I do think about all of this.

Honestly, I am afraid of dying. I think it is more of a fear of the pain I will go through than what my final destination will be. I wear a Scapular Medal and I try very hard to remain faithful to the Church and to the devotion of the Brown Scapular. Now, don’t get me wrong, I do not believe the Brown Scapular is a magical charm by any means but I do believe that I will hopefully have the grace of a final Confession and Last Rites before I die.

I never used to be scared of dying as I believe in Jesus Christ and never really did anything so bad to condemn myself to hell.

Now, for the first time I am scared of dying.

Learning that so many small things can condemn oneself to hell makes me feel it is almost impossible to avoid.

Unless I remove all information from my brain, I am surely condemned.

I never thought, after about age 10 or 11 that I would go straight to Heaven but always assumed time in purgatory. Now it seems to me that I am struggling to get there.

I am losing my way.
I am not losing my belief.

Thanks.
I’m not afraid from death, I’m afraid of experiencing pain before death.

For me, it’s been off and on since late childhood. I’d been VERY worried recently, but even more recently, my faith has grown stronger, and through family and learning, I’ve grown more comfortable with the idea of death - when and how it will happen, and what it will lead to. I feel that when my time comes, it will come. Everyone has a purpose on Earth, and whether the time we operate here is short, or nearly a century; we live a good life and all will be well.

I accept that I’ll probably have more doubts and fears in the future - it’s a strong part of human nature - but I believe the human spirit can overcome almost anything.

"Sleep, angels will watch over you. And soon, beautiful dreams will come true.
"Yes. I saw your signature last night and thought how beautiful it is, and I remembered some beautiful dreams I had before.

Afterward last night I dreamed I was running away from a huge flying dragon and other dragons, I do not remember how it start, but I run to a place like park, but wild, but still has buildings, because once I flied to a place between two buildings to hide and that huge flying dragon and the group of dragons flying to me try to catch me, and I run to wild park, and then I met men and I walked with them thought then I felt safe, I forgot how the dream end.🤷

How so?:bighanky:

How can I have sweet dreams?

I had a sweet dream this moring!
Dream, beautiful! A real sweet dream!
I dreamed a lovely white dove on the table, and some kind shining, flying, and thought that it were from Heaven. Afterward I woke up,

Should I say this lovely dream was in this morning because then I woke up the day almost bright.
:angel1:
yes! …I dreamed of it

I am going to repeat this one more time for people who so want to cling to their misconceptions that they close their ears to the truth, because they choose fear over love: the Church has one and only one thing on the list of what will send you to hell, and that is refusal of God’s forgiveness, love and mercy at the moment of death and judgement in a fully informed free will choice to separate oneself from God forever.

The Church has a list of mortal sins, it was revealed by God, it is called the 10 commandments. The human race keeps adding new and innovative ways to break those commandments, and that is why the list of sins keeps growing longer.
The Church’s list of moral sins is way longer than the 10 Commandments.
It’s quite a stretch to say that some of the things the Catholic Church has defined as mortal sins really amount to a “…choice to separate oneself from God forvever”.

Nope, not afraid of death and dying one bit.

I am afraid of a painful death, however, but that is more fear of pain than anything else.

Just exactly what would they be then. A choice to disobey the Body of Christ?
If you bothered to take the time you will find that this ‘list’ is completey grounded in those ten commandments.

Only by the Church’s own interpretation of same.
