Aren't we meant to wear the Brown Scapular all the time?

God doesn’t wait till t your showering to end your life so you won’t be wearing it. i think this may be bodering on superstision, i wear the five fold because the brown one on it’sown kept breaking where as the five fold i wear to bed yet doesn’t break.

I’ve never really heard one good reason for not wearing the Brown Scapular whilst asleep or in the shower. Are you any less in Our Lady’s service as you sleep? Are you somehow more resilient against the wiles of the devil when you’re showering?
Are you any less “in Our Lady’s service” (whatever that means:shrug:) while not wearing the Brown Scapular?

Are you somehow more resilient against the wiles of the devil while wearing a piece of wool fabric?

Don’t get me wrong, I am a Carmelite friar and the brown scapular is a part of my habit but what is said above seems to be superstition and not what we actually teach about the scapular.

For the person who said it’s not necessary to wear it in the shower… That’s satans tactic. Not wearing it. If you have issues with wearing wool in water at least wear the medal.
:shrug:Sounds a bit like superstition again.🤷
Also I read that St Therese and JPII always wore their Scapulars
St Therese did not wear the brown scapular that you wear. The form you wear is two small square pieces of wool fabric. St Therese, as a Carmelite, wore the full scapular like I do.

It looks like this . . .

It is worn over the tunic.

We do not sleep in it and we surely do not bath in it.

I wear my little Brown Scapular 24/7, this is my personal devotion though. It reminds me to live out my Faith at all times, and that I belong to God in all I do :gopray2::gopray:

When one has already been enrolled in the Scapular and has worn it it is a sign of his consecration to Mary, that he is a child of Mary who trusts in her completely. That he is in her service. That he will be a good child and go where his Good Mother directs, etc. The Brown Scapular is not the only sign of such a consecration and devotion to Mary of course. I don’t doubt the Marian devotion of some one who doesn’t wear the Brown Scapular (such as Eastern Catholic).

And yes I am more resilient against the devil and his snares when I’m wearing the scapular. Not because the scapular its self has any power. But because it’s a sign that I am under Our Lady’s protection and that I am assured of her prayers in all my trials and temptations.

And she wants us to wear the scapular to remember this. An outward sign. It’s why she gave it to us. To be quite honest Brother by even considering this has any thing to do with superstition sheds a sad light on the state of the world when a Catholic cannot even wear his scapular in peace amongst fellow Catholics.

Our Lady wants us to wear it. It’s a couple of square inches of brown wool that sit on your front and back and are connected by two ribbons going over the shoulder. Why on earth wouldn’t you wear it going to sleep? Why on earth wouldn’t you shower with it?

The reason I do not is because my scapular is part of my habit and is pictured in my post above. This is the true scapular.

The brown scapular that Carmelites wear is a piece of cloth that is almost as wide as the person to wear it and is just under twice their height. In the middle there is a hole for the person to put their head through. Again, this is what is pictured above in my reply.

The brown scapular the laity wears is something that was put together for the lay person to wear. It is not a full scapular like what is worn by the Carmelite religious.

No where have I read anything about the brown scapular that says that by wearing it we are putting ourselves in service to Mary or that she will direct us to go any where. That is not Mary’s job. Her job is to point at Christ.

I am sorry but a lot of what you say does appear to be bordering on superstition if not fully into it.

I just want to say the Carmelite habit rocks! 😃
Thanks!

Brother David, is the below part of the Carmelite tradition?
“WHOSOEVER DIES IN THIS GARMENT
SHALL NOT SUFFER ETERNAL FIRE.”
  • promise of Our Lady to St. Simon Stock on July 16, 1251
I got it from the link figs posted.

I dont really see the attraction, if you will, of wearing a small scapular. (not going to comment on a religious habit one)

I don’t really see how wearing a small piece of cloth gets you to heaven.

Please go to this website.

A Catechesis on the Brown Scapular

This was written jointly by Discalced Carmelites (O.C.D.) and the Order of Carmelites (O.Carm.) and received the imprimatur of Cardinal James Hickey, Archbishop of Washington, DC.

It is rather long but it says it all.

Excellent link. Thanks. This part caught my attention:
Therefore, the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel echoes the promise of Divine Revelation: The one who holds out to the end is the one who will see salvation (Matthew 24:13), and Remain faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life (Revelation 2:10). The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a reminder to its wearers of the saving grace which Christ gained upon the cross for all: All you who have been baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves in him (Galatians 3:27). There is no salvation for anyone other than that won by Christ. The Sacraments mediate this saving grace to the faithful. The sacramentals, including the scapular, do not mediate this saving grace but prepare us to receive grace and dispose us to cooperate with it.
Now, I have to ask, has this always been the Carmelite understanding?

I am well aware of the difference in size between the small scapular of the laity and the full-sized scapular of the religious. My ignorance is that I thought the religious would have still worn the little scapular underneath the larger habit.

The Brown Scapular is a sign of one’s consecration to Mary. That’s where I draw my words about service. As for Our Lady directing us… this is what a good Mother does. She takes her young by the hand and leads them. What you say about Our Lady “pointing to Christ”… this is exactly what I am saying. She leads one to Christ. It would be absolutely impossible for her to lead you any where else.

Well that is certainly a shame brother. But do not worry yourself over it. Saint Louis and Saint Alphonsus have warned us of your type.

Read what I wrote again. The scapular is not a magic talisman. No one is going to bestruck down for not wearing a special ‘shower scapular’, switching out to a medal, or anything superstitious like that.

I recommend that the OP speak to his priest or ask on the Carmelite sub-forum here. But don’t be think that the physical item -absent the true devotion- is going to protect you.
No it’s not magic but Mary said it needs to be worn

Call it superstition all you wish , but you start telling yourself it doesn’t need to be worn that defeats it’s purpose

I knew this reaction would occur and I know what’s right in my heart so I will continue to wear it all times. Thankyou and God bless you for your responses +++

I think this is a good discussion.

It’s fine to wear it all the time, but I think if there is a fear that if it is removed when bathing that the Devil will get you is saying that the power comes from the scapular itself and that God/our Lady can’t or won’t protect us while we’re showering…

So what would be an example of superstition?

Let’s not get too blunt. But sorry Brother/Father , you are seeming that way unfortunately. One should be encouraging fellow Catholics.

Yes it may seem like superstition, but you know what I don’t actually care if I am being superstitious according to anyone here because I am doing what I know Mary wants
