Aren't we supposed to be ridiculed?

I’m pretty sure Jesus said something about people ridiculing us and hurting us and all if we became followers of Him. But Catholics are like the most dominant religion in the world, and look at Vatican City. We pretty much own the world. It’s a normal thing to say your Catholic ( unless you live in certain places in the middle east), and no one starts to beat you when you admit to it. Jews, on the other hand, are the people i think are the most ridiculed. I mean, i know in the beginning, christians were hunted down and all, but nowadays pretty much everyone is catholic, or at least some type of christian.

Get out in the to world a little bit more then talk to me. Here in Indiana the KKK used to burn crosses in front of Catholic churches. Read a little US history. Look up the “No Nothing Party” or Al Smith. Look up the Mexican martyrs…this is recent history! Or simply visit one of the anti-Catholic message boards. You’ll read things that people would never say in public…

It may be true that most people today won’t ridicule you (to your face, anyway) if you tell them you’re Catholic, but that’s because most people assume you’re a lapsed Catholic who doesn’t believe much of what the Church teaches, least of all goes to Mass weekly, if you don’t go any further than just admitting your religious identity. Why? Because most Catholics today our lapsed Catholics. A big reason for this is 40 years of generally bad catechesis following the 2nd Vatican Council, but that’s another matter. If you reveal to many people that you believe in the Immaculate Conception, the Virgin Birth, Christ’s resurrection, Transubstantiation, Papal Infallibility, the forgiveness of sins in the confessional, the sinfulness of premarital sex and of birth control and abortion, basically everything the Church teaches, then you’re going to be in for some ridicule. Trust me. I lived in a fraternity house for 3 years.

Oh my gosh, are you kidding? I get comments every single day. If my scapular pokes out when doing physical labor, I get smirks. Anytime anything having to do with relationships is brought up, I am singled out. (ABC, sex, sexual innuendo, affection, partners, marriage, abortion, etc etc etc).

I had one guy yesterday prattling on about how he didn’t like that Ratzinger was “popeified” and that we are anti-semitics and hate muslisms.

I am constantly put on defense, poked at, laughed at, pointed at and what not, by everyone. Even by others who call themselves Christian and even by some who are Catholic and do not fully follow Christ.

When I was a teenager, my Catholicism led to death threats, fake calls to DCFS, online and real life stalking and complete harassment via phone, email, online and real life.

You have GOT to be kidding me. Catholics everywhere are completely munched up. We are made to look like crazies by the media and singled out by anyone else with a chip on their shoulder and/or an unresolved issue.

The beatitudes do not say that we will be persecuted, but that if we are, we are blessed to be so because of his Name.

In the US, and some places in Western Europe, this is true-- Catholics are not normally physically abused. However, they are persecuted in other ways. And, in other countries, many many people die each year for their faith.

Your post mocks their sacrifice.

They are persecuted, yes. I would not say they are “most” ridiculed.

I disagree. “Pretty much everyone” is a stretch-- not everyone is Catholic or even Christian. No where near it. And, Christians are still hunted down and killed in many countries in the world.

On TV and in the movies and newspapers it is always the Catholics that take a beating. The shows portray the priests and nuns as drunks, sex addicts, pedofiles, heretics…

The attack on Catholic imagery is non stop. The pope, cardinals wearing red, the nuns habit, the latin prayers, saints, statues the Virgin Mary, Rosary beads…

The viciousness in the “media” directed at the Church pales in comparison to any other group, including Jews and protestants.

Comedians and politicians know they can play it safe with an anti-Catholic remark.

It’s often subtle, like the messages that the media sends out that pre-marital sex is normal and healthy and that ones that stay virgins until marriage are the ones that get the odd looks (hey, you can even encounter that among Catholics!!).

I don’t think equating legal punishment for breaking the law with religious persecution is in anyway a fair statement…if that is what you were trying to say.
