Buenos Aires, Sep 7, 2007 / 11:23 am (CNA).- In the wake of a scandal caused by school professor who dresses up as a woman, the Consortium of Catholic Doctors of Buenos Aires rejected the idea that sexuality is sentimental and not biological, noting that science demonstrates that only two sexes exist: male and female

Here we go again. Noone is going to deny tha there are only two sexes. Sexual atraction can be biological, whether it is same or opposite. But then again not many are ever going to understand that.

That is also what it says in the book of Genesis. And I think most transsexuals would agree, as well. So this may be a non-issue.

In reading the article it unclear if the unnamed professor is claiming to be transsexual or if the professor is claiming to be on some kind of transgender spectrum.

The focus of this article denied it. And so call transgendered people do claim that there are a different sex. It is a sad commentary of today’s culture that people even have to state that there are only two sexes.

I remeber readsing that fish near a factory that produces contraceptive pills are mutated, e.g male fish with female parts as a result to high exposure to estrogen and other female hormones. Yet another reason to be pro-life…

A couple of years ago on one of the history or science channels I saw a couple of programs about intersexed individuals of various kinds. One was a beautiful woman, very feminine (to all appearances), including breasts and genitals. But her period had not started by the time she entered college. Genetic testing showed she was XY–the male genotype.

And then there was a woman who suffered from “testicular feminization”–female genitals, but undescended testes rather than ovaries. Is she a man or a woman?

There were several other similar stories.

I asked my doctor about this, and he merely replied, “In human sexuality, things are seldom what they seem.”

I would say God dictated that there be two sexes, but after the fall many things happened. Pollution between these two is more than possible, I am an example of it myself.

The term that is now socially acceptable for the condition is ‘Intersex’. Hermaphrodite is insulting, and considered a slur-word. Why intersex? Because that’s what we are. We are not a ‘third’ per say, but we are between.

It is exceedingly (1/1000000+) rare for someone to have both aspects, fully functional, this is why hermaphrodite is insulting. Not only are we NOT ‘both’ we are completely sterile. Hermaphrodites in ancient cults and polytheist religions were symbols of fertility, yet people call us that and we are sterile beyond all repair in almost all cases. It’s like a slap in the face.

There are literally dozens of different conditions that lead to this state of being.

I have heard some gender theorists argue that there is no male or female- there are only gendered qualities, and a physiological sex that is ultimately irrelevant. That kind of talk is scary, and makes no sense, scientifically or ethically.

I find this fascinating. 🙂 Do “intersex” people have both XX and XY DNA (or other complicated combinations, like XXY and XX; or XXX and XY; or just X and XY)? I apologize for my ignorance, but this is truly interesting… To think that people could have some cells in their bodies that are XX and some that are XY is mind-boggling to most of us, I’m sure.

Or am I totally off with the DNA thing? :whacky:

Like I said, there are does of conditions that happen.

People can have XXY, XYY, XO, XXYY, XX men, XY women. They are discovering new ways this occurs too, because DNA testing is becoming cheaper and more common. Some people don’t even know, because the body compensates enough they don’t actually get sick/have and side effects and they find out when they’re being typed for something else like cancer.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersex

Has a run down and linking to many of those listed above.

ha ha ha! I don’t think the book of Genesis contemplated about DNAs.

Thank you for the information!

In light of this, I wonder how the doctors would categorize the people who have mixed DNA and ambiguous genitalia?

(I am totally ignoring “gender” here, just talking about biological sex.)
Well, until recently at least in the US, if you had variable genitalia they would hack at it and do surgery until you looked normal. The key word here is LOOK. They didn’t care whether it actually worked, or let the person have marital relations later in life.

This is changing slowly to let the individual wait until they can make the choice about their own body on how best to proceed, because nearly all the surgeries are one-way streets. Once they’re done, they can’t be easily undone, or cheaply.

I was mangled up myself shortly after birth, things look relatively normal if one was to see me naked, but I am completely incapable of having sex with my fiance and thus unable to get married in the catholic church.

I have seen many programs about how some people have both sexes to different degrees…and as the OP said, usually sterile. I also have understood that the parents have to wait to see if the child is male or female to see what sex predominates, instead of assuming it to be one sex (let’s say that the penis is very evident) and would treat it like a boy when the personality, etc is like a girl. Is this true?

As I said, they perform surgery at infancy, and then aim the child into the path that was surgically easiest. They tend to not wait until they can tell personality wise.

Again, this is changing, but its still common place to assign before the child displays gendered/sexed behavior.

Code:
What happens if, after performing surgery, to make one a boy and being treated like a boy…down the road, the boy always felt like a girl from the first day of awareness? And wants to be a girl when she grows up?

It is usually trying to turn a boy into a girl. Often as a result of “circumcision accidents” or underdevelopment.

As for the out come, what you described is usually what happens. That is why such procedures are so controversial now.

There is no standard treatment. They are just shuffled into the medical community’s way of treating transsexuals. In the DSM-IV, there are two classifications of Gender Identity Disorders.

GID and GIDNOS. GIDNOS stands for Gender Identity Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. This includes transsexuals that also have an intersex disorder.

That is my own diagnosis, I am a XXY mosaic, some cells have XY, some have XXY, some have XX.

Only two sexes! Well, I’m glad they were finally able to sort that one out after all of these thousands of years!

👍

It is a sad reality that people do suffer from genetic deformities that result in confusion. This is another example of our fallen world where things like this go wrong. It is a difficult topic indeed for those born in that manner.
