Armed men bomb Catholic church in Southern Philippines
Sunday, August 29, 2010 12:29:57 PM

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 29, 2010) – At least 3 people were wounded after unidentified men tossed grenades Sunday during a mass inside a Roman Catholic Church in the southern Philippines.

The attack occurred at around 8:00 a.m. while a priest, Father Art Paraiso, was saying mass in San Vicente Ferrer church in the town of Kalilangan. “Three worshippers were injured in the grenade attack,” an aide to Bishop Jose Araneta Cabantan, of the Diocese of Malaybalay, told the Mindanao Examiner.

Witnesses said two young men in motorcycle lobbed two hand grenades, but only one exploded inside the inside church. The other explosive was later recovered and detonated by the police outside the church.

“The other grenade that failed to explode was detonated by the Kalilangan policemen who were also in the church hearing the mass of Father Art Paraiso,” the bishop later told reporters.

“Policemen who were in the church helped Father Paraiso in calming the parishioners down. They then all went outside the church and Father Paraiso proceeded to say the mass outside,” he said

There’s no stopping the Mass 👍

And nice name for a priest. I wonder if he is lovingly called Father Heaven 😉
paraiso = paradise

Sadly, these kinds of attacks are not unknown on Mindanao. The island has had a decades long insurgency with several groups seeking secession from the Republic of the Philippines. Mindanao is majority Muslim, and the nationalistic insurgency often wraps itself in Muslim identity. The main armed group is the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which has been involved in multiple kidnappings of foreign priests.

Fortunately, in this attack one of the grenades failed to explode and the other one went off prematurely so that only the blasting cap detonated and not the main charge.

The bishop has urged prayer and calmness.
That attack on San Vicente Ferrer parish in the town of Kalilangan in Bukidnon province left at least 3 people wounded. Bishop Jose Araneta Cabantan of the Diocese of Malaybalay in Bukidnon also called on the faithful pray in the aftermath of the attack.
He appealed to relatives of those wounded in the attack to let law enforcement authorities solve the case and not take justice into their own hands to prevent bloodshed.
“I urged, all the faithful in Bukidnon, especially in Kalilangan, to pray and remain calm and not let this isolated incident sow tension and discord among the Christians and Muslims here,” he told the Mindanao Examiner.

Despite the ongoing insurgency, Mindanao Christians and Muslims in ordinary life get along. Here is an article from three years ago about a church built with the help of Muslims in a predominantly Muslim town.

i hear this all the time. in iraq, turkey, india, pakistan… etc. what these men did is pure evil. evil inspired by a very orthodox understanding of the tenants of islam, that they should bring a sword against non-believers. where’s the muslim outcry?

islam is not a religion of peace, never has been never will be. they want tension between faiths, they all want universal sharia law. islam is God’s punishment for the dictatorship of secularism and relativism.

Perhaps it is not being reported in the English language press, since Cebuano is the predominant dialect in the province where this happened. And ethnic groups often speak other dialects, such as Binukid or Hiligaynon/Ilonggo.

There is no doubt that this was a terrorist act, and to be rightly condemned. And it likely, although there is no evidence yet , that it was committed by one of the Islamic insurgent groups. However, it is prudent to separate out the actions of extremists from the behavior and attitudes of the majority of persons living there.

it’s always the minority. but the majority either accepts it as a means to an end, or they silently support the act. i would think the minority are those that believe sharia law should not be the law of the land.

when the Holy Father gave his Regensburg address, the muslims outcry was extreme and violent. they killed catholics over it. they danced when the world trade center was brought down. they will never live peaceably.

Islam is CALLED a Faith,in truth it is an ideology.Ideologies have a nasty way of IMPOSING rather than PROPOSING.You don’t HAVE to become a Muslim but you WILL be subject to Dhimmitide.Read the Koran-it’s a horrifying Fairy Tale written by a child rapist that even the Brothers Grimm could not have conceived of.

Dale_M are you sure Mindanao is dominantly Muslim? Or did i read it wrongly?

You read correctly. However, I read wrongly. 😊

Yes, Mindanao is only about 20% Muslim. I apologize for confusing everyone with my mistake. 😦

Islam can be both a faith or an ideology depending on one’s attitude towards it and how one chooses to live it. The same can be said of Christianity or any religion or belief. All beliefs have the potential to become ideology.

Oh its okay, i was just wondering… that’s my birth place. 🙂

Yes it was a bunch of Roman Catholics and Prebyterians who flew those jets full of screaming victims into the the Twin Towers,Read the Koran and get back to me.It references IMPOSED world domination or dhimmitude. We propose they impose or they’ll kill you.I’m not talking about a humble drycleaner that everyone in my town loves,I’m talking about the Truth of Islam which is right there in the Koran.I suggest you read the book,“The Third Choice: Islam, dhimmitude and freedom …” by Mark Durie before indulging in any more specious eqivalency.

So, you disagree that Christianity or any other belief taken to the extreme and lacking love and tolerance can become an ideology? And, if Islam is indeed an ideology of the sort you describe, what should our response to that ideology be? Should we take our nearest Muslim neighbor into captivity and shoot them? Did you learn nothing from the coflict in the Balkans?

with muslims doing volience like this aganist church services, how can you seriously believe that muslims are going to heaven?

You might as well ask, given all the abortions which are committed by Catholics, how can anyone seriously believe that Catholics are going to heaven?

Actually the Muslims only control some of the provinces. There is still quite a few provinces that are mostly Christian. In the 80s they attempted to separate and form a new state with Sabah, Malaysia. There is a pending claim by a Sultan in Mindanao that Sabah belongs to his family where it was given as a gift from another Sultan some centuries ago.

The religious war in Mindanao has been going on for a long time. In one of my trips to Iloilo which is on the island of Panay to the north of Mindanao, there is a 17th or 18th century church there that doubles as a fort. They have 2-meter thick walls, its is on the southern part of the island closes to Mindanao. The church is used to repell attacks by the “Moros”.

The problem here is more complicated than that. Islam has spread to Malaysia in Indonesia and to Mindanao before the Spanish came and brought Catholicism to the Philippines. To them, politically this area is their territory. Its compounded that the island being assumed into what is now the Philippines when in the past they were separate. So its not only a religious war thats going on, but a political one as well. They seek to be an independent state run by Muslim Law.

However they dominate several provinces. In fact, an autonomous regions was created about 20 years ago called the ARMM (Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao) where they were allowed to carry Muslim Law on top of Philippine Civil Law. This is an effort to appease the Muslims of the region.

Another effort is the recent declaration that the end of Ramadan is now a public non-working holiday for the entire country.
