Not one reply…did anyone bother to read the article? It is definitely a double-edged sword…IMHO. Guess Ben Stiller’s rant was more interesting.

I guess it’s a matter of recruitment versus re-enlistment. Check out Reuters’ headline.

Army recruiting below last year’s levels
Mon Apr 10, 2006 7:29 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Halfway through the fiscal 2006 recruiting year, the U.S. Army
has netted 737 fewer new soldiers than at this point last year, when it went on to miss
its annual recruiting goal for the first time since 1999.

The Pentagon on Monday released its latest recruiting data showing that from last October
through the end of March, the Army netted 31,369 recruits, compared to 32,106 at this time
last year.

Thekla,

Thank you for the replay and your analysis of the article.

I think this represents an interesting dichotomy. On the one hand, the Army is having a hard time recruiting new troops because of the war. On the other hand, those already at war are more predisposed to staying in. I wonder if the veterans know something we don’t…this seeming contradiction could add fuel to the fire of conservatives that argue that war coverage is slanted to foster public opinion against the war.

I can understand that it is difficult to recruite new troops in the middle of a long war. But I think the number of troops re-enlisting knowing they will be going back to Iraq is really quite remarkable. From talking with a number of them, they have quite a sense of mission.

Of course I don’t think I’m the majority, thanks be to God, but I know of one person, a friend’s brother who wants to go back because he likes war in general. I think some people just want to be soldiers and feel a sense of purpose no matter where they’re sent.

Well, my son hates war, is in Iraq, and he is talking about reenlisting. But he does feel a strong sense of purpose.

Tell your friend’s brother, thank you for me and Charlie-Mike (it means “continue the mission”)

I think it is an extraordinarily positive reflection on the character of our service people. God bless them…the rest, I’ll leave to everyone on the board to decide.
