misericordie:
Hello all, I currently work in a Church rectory here in Manhattan, and it is run by a new VERY authoritarian NEW religious Institue. The Pastor is great: a little stoic but a patient and kind man: very considerate of his employees.
Things have changed though since a NEW assistant to the pastor was named (priest of the SAME Institute: about 31-32 years old). He is very beligerant and arrogant: he even told the poor woman who cleans that he wants his shirts hand washed. He GIVES orders like a Marine seargent and does not tolerate ONE mistake on the parish bulletin, etc. Many people of the parish have been taliking about his pompous attitude(and he is a RELIGIOUS priest) and he treats lay people as if they are WAY below him and stupid. Today I reminded him that the bulletin needed to be re-viewed by him (i prepare half of the bulletin) and he said: "I know!!! You don’t have to tell me!! In a very nasty way as an adult would speak to a child who just did something bad. I really am getting very frustrated at this priest, and God knows I am holding my temper BECAUSE I need the job at this time. But God knows I don’t know how long before I stand up and get in his face too.
The institute/order seems to train their priests(most) that we LAY MEN AND WOMEN are WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY below them. Is this okay?? Is this BAD example what Christ would do??
WHAT SHOULD I DO, please help me: my patience is shrinking.:banghead:

“The Church is not a democracy”, though.

Is that not what people always say ?

Some people would be grateful for a priest like that - and they would also quote various Saints on the wrongness of criticising priests. ##

Yeah, but would they wash his shirts by hand?

when I leave the current one, I will just leave without giving this guy previous notice
Oh Misericordi,
No matter how upset, frustrated, belittled you feel at your current job, please please do not do that.
Please give notice and do this out of respect for yourself. You then will have moved to a new job in peace - not in spite.

Sow a good seed.

Well, yes, maybe, if those same people have a door mat personality, that does NOT work here in our beloved USA!! Nor ROME!! I would probably do that for the POPE(if i get a salary).

And some would quote Christ when he attacked the Pharisees for their arrogance, putting on of airs, self importance, and sense of entitlement.

Christ was God the Son, Second Person of the Holy Trinity. He ranked higher than the Pharisees, and therefore it was entirely within his rights to put them in their place, and in the strongest of terms.

True, and would he react any differently to similar behavior by members of the clergy who are ordained to act in his name?

Amazing that your new priest has a twin at our parish, Miseriecordie!
It has been said that our new priest has a split personality. He can be nice, and turn on people in a minute. He has hurt many parishioners feelings. So far after promising not to make any changes in our church for a year, and also after a vote was taken not to change our altar, he got rid of our marble altar, and put in a makeshift altar to the front of the sanctuary, he
got rid of all but 5 church pews on one side of the church, and put in bright white folding chairs, moved the organ out of the sanctuary, has a movie screen on the sanctuary off and on, put a rug with fringe he got from afghanistan over the homemade altar . tore out marble benches and had the pieces hauled to the dump and he replaced them with folding chairs. Our church was beautiful and the parishoners paid for it with their donations throughout the years, and he came and turned our beautiful church into (as a student at the school said), into a ghetto church.

I think it’s an ego thing.

Its amazing that our pastor did some of the things you mentioned. LIke taking out hmm, 4-6 pews and more for the quoir but the quoir didnt like it so they put some of them back.

You should pray for these priests too. Although if they dont want to change, it probably wont help.

Our new priest took out about 25 pews, Bill. That’s alot of folding chairs to take their places. Also our noon mass will be changed to a contemporary Mass with a band.

You are right about praying for our new priest, though like you mentioned I would be very surprised if he puts our church back the way it was.

Who is HE that he should turn the church into a kumbayah era church. can you guys all get together a group of parish members to sign a letter to the bishop? Is he diocesan or religious, my god these guys think they bought the church. He thinks he will be there the rest of his life: priests come and go. What a left wing liberal your priest is.

Can you imagine if people still kissed their hands?? I don’t kiss any priests hands only a faithful bishop as Charles Chaput would i kiss his RING.

we seem to have wandered on to the CTA-VOTF forum. We’ve got priests handling 4-5 parishes, priest in jail for sex abuse, priests having affairs, priests arrested for public indecency, priests advocating abortion, priests teaching heresy in Catholic colleges, and you are upset because the new guy wants to supervise what gets printed in the bulletin and has an aggravating manner with parish employees.

When will Catholics realize you can’t run to the bishop whining about every thing you don’t like about your priest and demand a new one. The bishop is trying to cover all his parishes and keep them open with a shrinking pool of pastors. The faithful priests are struggling to meet the demands placed on them that formerly would be handled by 3-4 men, and most have a diocesan responsibility as well as their parish assignment. I have worked with priests for 20 years in 4 dioceses and have never met one that works less than 60 hours a week.

If you don’t like his management style, take a look at the work ethic of the parish employees. It may just be that he has been given the assignment of correcting a situation in the parish office that has been allowed to hamper parish management and the best interests of the parish.
It is routine here for all employees to offer a letter of resignation, when a new pastor comes, along with a current resume and request for consideration for the position, so that the pastor is free to build the parish team he can work with.

90% of our priests are holy, gifted, giving men who have battled their whole lives every day with evils we only encounter sporadically. They are pastors, which means they continually look out for the entire flock, and cannot allow one wayward sheep to lead the others into trouble. They face professional and spiritual challenges stronger than most of us will ever know. Each year they look forward not to peaceful retirement, but to more and more duties and longer hours. that they can maintain common courtesy and a civil demeanor is simply amazing to me, given all the have to contend with.

My advice in working with a “difficult” priest is to follow the lead of St Francis, get down on your knees and kiss his hands, which hold the Body of our Savior, thank God for putting him in your life, and pray for him continually.

I respect your wanting to view all priests as perfect, but all you said here does not give any priest a right or any person for that matter to belittle people, and scandalize them by so doing. NOT what Christ was: he was not a beligerant, angry person. ESPECIALLY in today’s climate in the church, priests cannot go around as dictators and so ANGRY. Actually excessive anger is a mental disorder, and calls for therapy or medication. Your figures seem to be blind-sided too=i really doubt that all of them are HOLY men as the media has made us aware of the last 3 years. I just hope they continue to be under severe scrutiny, and we have a right to expect more from these leaders of community. THEY ARE PUBLIC figures and as such they are in positions of power and authority=to arive at a parish (not even the pastor whom i respect totally and like) making ALL lay people there, not just employees but parish members as well feel stupid is not very wise nor prudent. People want to help the priests there, but not if these same people are treated as little ignorant children just because they are NOT priests. Even the pope has spoken against AUTHORITARIANISM!! It worked 5o years ago, not today!!

Our new priest is a Diocesan Priest, Misericordie. There have been so many parishioners complaining among themselves, but so far no organized push to collect signatures of complaint and send them to our Bishop.

The Priest he replaced, retired and he was very Traditional. A complete change from what we have now. Our retired Priest is very much missed!

misericordie,

you are so out of line with much of what you have posted regarding this priest. making innuendos and accusations about his supposed flirtatiousness and sexual frustration is just lewd, rude and crude.

cultivate a spirit of humility and gain some respect for the OFFICE of the priesthood. the idea of you not giving notice to your employer, a priest (!!!), with the willful intent of vengeance is both immature and of poor character.

you should be ashamed of yourself for spreading gossip, speaking uncharitably and advertising your own speculations of this priest’s supposed struggles with the flesh.

and you wonder why your personality clashes with his? interesting.

Here’s an idea:

Why don’t you go to him for confession and say “I’m having a lot of trouble with my boss, who strikes me as arrogant and impatient. I’ve had a lot of very uncharitable thoughts about him and I don’t know how to resolve the situation.”

OK, that would be a little too wacky! But, it’s a funny thing to imagine! 😉

Priests really are no different from everybody else. Jerk bosses abound in the world and this guy is simply another one of them.

Pray for him. Pray that you’ll cease to resent him and that God will bless him and make him happy. Don’t pray “Oh, God, please change Father Arrogant and make him less aggravating.” Pray, instead, “Dear God, please bless Father Arrogant and give him some nice little grace today, like a nice meal or a happy event of some kind. Please give me the graces necessary to do my very best to please him and be a better worker.”

I’ll tell you something: I used to work in a really fast-paced, low-end restaurant (Big Boy.) I occassionally used to wait on really rotten people. They’d make astounding messes, run me ragged, and leave me no tip. Naturally, this made me REALLY angry and resentful. One time, I started to pray in a totally sarcastic, “thank-you-sir-may-I-have-another” sort of way, “Oh God, thank you for the honor and privelege to serve these people. Please give me the grace to work harder and do better next time.” I was totally frustrated and being sarcastic when I started praying that, but it actually did make me feel better! By the time I was done, I no longer felt sarcastic, and I really did mean it. I made a point of praying like that every time I started feeling enraged at a customer.

It really works!
