It’s likely they are harmless and meant to teach children about the wounds of Jesus perhaps for Corpus Christi or some such.
This is a very good point. I hadn’t thought of the cookies as maybe a teaching tool for children as opposed to a tasteless “joke” for adults.

My impression is that the cookies were baked by a Sunday school teacher. Quite cute, actually.

Well… one thing I think we can all agree on… at least every now and then, it is nice that there is a thread where CAFers can disagree without blasting each other!!!😀

[due to the nice participants and all…]

What is the rosary cartoon depicting? Is that some sort of editorial cartoon depiction of the “Keep your rosaries off my ovaries” pro-choice slogan? That doesn’t sit well with me.

The cake makes me a little uncomfortable, but I’d be open to hearing the artists’ intent.

to me… the cake is blasphemy and the rosary cartoon is at least offensive.

Things like these used to bother me but now I just pray for people.

I don’t think the artists created the cake to be blasphemous, but maybe edible items are not the best medium for religious expression. Every year we have a cake with Our Lady of Guadalupe to celebrate her feast day in our church. Every year there is a discussion about whether we should cut her image.

I couldn t even look at it for more than a second yesterday.
And this…man…about to cut the cake.
He apologized after the uproar it caused but…
it is never ending,Bart.
I think you what I mean…

I don’t understand how the cookies that Bruised_Reed made could be considered blasphemous, or the cake.

It reminds me that some Muslims believe that depicting Muhammad is bad.

I think the case for blasphemy rests on it being disrespectful to God and making light of the sacred. I don’t know if I’d go that far (unless the creator’s stated intent was just that). I’d say it’s in poor taste (no pun intended 😐). I’d save the charge of blasphemy for things like the Crucifix in urine or the Mary splattered with dung rather than these confectionary creations.

I didn’t even read through the responses, but that is disgusting and vile. It’s much worse than he actually ate a piece of the cake…it wasn’t just on exhibition, as an art cake. They actually cut it up and gave him a piece of Jesus’ arm to eat! Reprehensible!!

I saw those cookies also as I scrolled past…I don’t like those either. I can’t fully explain why, but it seems so flagrantly disrespectful. All of it is a mockery of Jesus’ sacrifice!

I think we need to remember that the folks at the art exhibition were not eating “Jesus’ arm”. They were eating a piece of cake. It was not blessed or consecrated and it was not in any way Jesus except in the form of artistic representation. Once it was cut up and ceased to look like anything, it was just cake.

Some of the responses on this thread make it sound like people were eating Jesus’ actual person.
